Vivian Arend is an American romance novel writer who has written a large number of award winning and bestselling novels. Arend’s series Forces of Nature is her most revered work. The first book in the series is “Tidal Wave” and was published in 2009. Tidal Wave follows the sexual dreams and adventures of a beautiful and sexually ambivalent Alexia Colten. Alexia has returned the ocean-side village of Jaffrey’s Cove to visit her grandmother, who is ailing and needs to be moved into an assisted living facility. Her love for the seaside has kept her coming back to the dreamy town but this time the sense of urgency is real as she realizes that her grandmother does not have much time left. Every minute she spends with the once vibrant and energetic woman is precious. Her grandmother offers her a beautiful family heirloom and her house on the seaside. Alexia accepts the dolphin-etched necklace but declines the house offer. She finds herself the center of attention for all men in town and soon finds herself fantasizing about a boy, now a man, she had grown up with in the town before moving. The medallion was not just a decorative piece, but I marked her as the new leader of a secret society of merfolk she had no idea about before. The medallion around her neck not only marks her as their next leader but as a love interest for every man in town. Joshua Marley has eyed Alexia since they were young and wants to get close to her but he is not the only one with interest in her. All the men in town, including his own brothers and cousin see her as the ultimate prize. The new matriarch of the merman society finds herself plunging into a sea of sexual adventure with Joshua and his equally gorgeous cousin Anthony. Arend describes the emotions and perhaps more importantly the explicit sex with vivid imagery that will leave erotica fans ravished. While the sex scenes do not take up much of the content, she has a way of building up to each sex scene making them periodic crescendos that keep the reader moving through the pages. The buildup is as gripping as the sex itself which allows for substantial character and setting development, a deficiency that many erotica novels suffer from. For many romantic novellas, it is possible for readers gloss over all the “boring” parts and go right into the sex but every scene in Tidal Waves generates intrigue and excitement. Nevertheless there are some deficiencies that many readers will ponder over but will ultimately forgive Arend for. Plot holes are relatively rampant on the novella; for example we do not get to know why Joshua is always away during every summer that Alexia returns to Jaffrey’s Cove.
The sequel to Tidal Wave, coming out in 2010 is “Whirlpool.” His novel takes the perspective of Chelsea, a member of Jeffery’s Cove pod who is also serving as Alexia’s housekeeper. Chelsea has harbored ambitions to move away from Jeffery’s Cove preferably to college but her lack of funds keeps that dream from becoming a reality. However, she finds reason to stay when she meets the town’s new sheriff with whom she has been in love her entire life. Despite all her sexual overtures, the gorgeous man keeps her at arm’s length despite his own lifelong longing for her. When alexia goes on her honeymoon, leaving the house to the two reluctant lovers, the sexual tension between them will only go through the roof. Soon, a third temptation shows up in the form of a handsome archeologist called James who is in town to catalogue the collections of Alexia’s grandfather. They have to guard the secret of the merfolk society from the human but they also have to contend with their collective sense of attraction towards him. The pent up sexual tension between the three explodes into a soup of erotic and explicit sex. Without knowing it, Jamie has put not only himself but the entire village in trouble as the merfolk magic clashes with forbidden sexual exploits. This novella takes the X-rated content to a whole new level. As with Tidal Wave, Whirlpool packs a myriad erotic scenes connected through intriguing buildup that is equally fascinating and suspenseful as the climactic sex scenes themselves. The character choice is perfect, with the resulting attraction between Jamie and Brenden catching many readers by surprise but also upping the anticipation to new heights. One cannot fail to commend Vivian Arend’s understanding of sexual emotions. Her descriptions down to the slightest change in breathing speed is described in vivid detail, leaving the reader feeling like they were the ones experiencing the feelings. Arend’s prowess allows her to avoid many of the failings of erotica novels. For example with many romance novels the sex scenes seem to take too much of the writer’s literary resources, with the lead up events appearing forced, and the sex itself seemingly a series of independent events that don’t require context. Arend on the other hand seems to be equally invested in the buildup events as much as the sex itself rather than adding events that read like afterthoughts. The two novels, while being written from two different perspectives are very relatable and harbor distinct identity that traces them back to Arend. Vivian Arend is undoubtedly one of the hottest romance writers of this generation. Over two million of Arend’s books have been sold globally, and many of her books have also been featured in USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists. All of Arend’s books can be read as standalone as they have no cliffhangers, they are also humorous, emotional, and sexy and have happily ever after.
Wolf Signs
Wolf Signs is the first book in Granite Lake Wolves series by Vivian Arend. The novel introduces Robyn Maxwell, a young woman with always longing for adventure. After her beloved brother cancels their ski trip, she decides to have adventures of her own. The fact that she is deaf does not in any way weaken her survival skills. She has been longing for adventures into the Yukon wilderness, and she gets herself going without her brother despite the challenges she might encounter. While in the cabin in the woods, she crosses paths with a handsome beast of a man, setting her hormones raging.
Robyn does not know of the existence of wolves, and she also does not know that she has wolf genes. However, Keil, the man who catches her heart from the first time they meet knows about it from the moment they first meet.
Robyn was not born deaf, but a virus she contracted as a child made her deaf. However, this does not stop her from doing whatever she wants, being independent and also taking control of her life. When she meets Keil and discovers the truth about her heritage, she does not get scared or run into the woods but rather accepts her identity and proves herself to be a worthy mate to Keil. On the other hand, Keil is the perfect man for Robyn. He is sexy as hell, and his woman is his priority. He might be tough on his people more so with the poor TJ, but tender and adorable when around his woman.
There is lots of romance in a cabin in the Rocky Mountains, enemies wreaking havoc and Robyn finally finding a place in the society where she belongs makes this debut book a hard to put down. The entire story takes place in the Yukon wilderness from the time Keil and Robyn meet. Robyn communicates by writing or either through ASL. There are lots of outdoor and indoor action in the novel, fight scenes, avalanches, and some incredibly sauna and hot shower scenes. The narrative is wonderfully written and includes well-crafted storyline; the characters are also memorable and likable as well.
Wolf Flight
Arend first introduced Tad in Wolf Signs when his sister, Robyn had discovered that she was a werewolf. Tad has always known that sometimes that he too will become a werewolf but so far so good he has not been triggered. At first, Tad clings to his humanity and profoundly rejects his true nature what he considers to be more beast than a man.
Then there is Missy, a woman who was once married to a man he never loved. When she is pushed into some dangerous situations, by her brother in law, Missy hatches one cunning plan, to seek help from Tad. She escapes from her pack and joins Tad for she believes that he will be able to help her dispose of her Omega powers.
Missy and Tad were once high school sweethearts who have more in common than they ever imagined. They are reunited together after Missy finds herself threatened while Tad life is falling apart. Tad is half human, half a wolf and his true nature as a wolf will not come out unless he has sex with someone of his nature. He denies giving into his wolf nature, and each day he struggles to keep that part of him hidden until the girl he once loved shows up and turns everything upside for him.
Missy Leason is on the run, she is running away from her pack, and she is almost out of time. An evil alpha wants to harvest her omega powers and is willing to break both the wolf and the human laws if that means a rise in his power. Missy honestly thinks that Tad can save her but to regain trust once more, she will have to confess secrets and also convince him that they are more than just high school lovers, they are true mates. However, when the villainous Alpha finds them, she may not get the chance to explain because Tad must confront him in a fight without the ability to shift into a wolf-like his counterpart.
Wolf Flight is a fascinating story from Vivian Arend. There are lots of action and suspense that will keep you turning pages for more action and naughty romance scenes. Tad’s sense of honor is both frustrating and adorable. His relationship with his true mate keeps on getting stronger and the more they are together, the more they get to understand each other and learn to live a happy life.
Wolf Games
In Wolf Games, we meet Missy’s sister; Maggie haunted by the events in her past such that she has not met her sister or interacted with other wolves for almost ten years. Miss invites Maggie to come and visit her and her new pack, however, Maggie is worried by the fact that wolves will surround her.
Then there is Erick, the second in charge of the Granite Lake pack. He accepts Missy’s request to collect her sister from the airport and make sure that she arrives home safe and sound. From the moment the Erik meets Maggie he quickly recognizes that she is true mate but Maggie does not trust his words, and Erik will have to convince her that they are destined to be together. Wolf Games is an intriguing third book in Granite Lake series. The characters are well woven; the plot is fast-paced, humorous and full of suspense and surprises.
Maggie has had her experiences when it comes to other wolves, and she finds it hard to trust them. Even though she likes Erik, she is scared of the bond that exists between them. On the other hand, Erik is supportive and protective of Maggie. He is also determined to show Maggie how good life can be with the pack.
