Vera Nazarian, born in Russia in 1966, is arguably the one and only Armenian-Russian professional speculative fiction writer working in the English language today.

Vera’s life is a rather odd journey. She left from the former Soviet Union during the Cold War’s height as a refugee when she was eight, with her parents and just a couple suitcases. She showed up in America in the year 1976, just one month before she turned ten, by way of Greece, Lebanon, and Italy.

After she settled in America, she graduated from Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood, California in the year 1984. Then she went to Pomona College in Claremont, California, double-majoring in Psychology and English. She got her BA in the year 1988 and went to work for more than a decade in the high tech industry.

Writing quickly came into her life, right when she figured out the English language, she began writing in it. She wrote and dreamed all through her elementary, junior high, and high school years. When she was seventeen, solder her first short story.

While she held down a full-time tech job, she came home to start her evening job, that of a professional science fiction and fantasy writer, musician, and artist.

“Win” was a finalist for a 2018 Dragon Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. “Dreams of the Compass Rose” and “Lords of Rainbow” were each nominated for a Spectrum.

Vera has written the “Lords of Rainbow” books, the “Atlantis Grail” series, and the “Cobweb Bride” trilogy, as well as some stand alone novels. Her debut novel, called “Dreams of the Compass Rose”, was released in the year 2002.

“Qualify” is the first novel in the “Atlantis Grail” series and was released in the year 2014. You’ve got two options. You either Qualify, or you die.

Gwenevere Lark, sixteen years old, is determined not to just Qualify but to rescue her whole entire family.

Being good enough to Qualify makes you eligible to compete in the brutal games of the Atlantis Grail, which grants all the winners the high-tech luxuries, laurels, and the full privileges of Atlantis citizenship. If you should happen to make it into the Top 10, all of your wildest wishes are granted, like curing your mom’s cancer.

There is just a single problem. Gwen Lark is a known nerd and a klutz. She is a hotshot in science, classics, history, and languages, however, the closest she has come to sports is a skateboard and a backyard pool.

This time, she is in way over her head, and is in for a fight of her very life, against some rather impossible odds and one world-class competition. This includes Logan Sangre, who is the most amazing guy in her entire school, the one that she has been crushing on, and doesn’t even seem to realize she exists.

Since every other teen on planet earth has got the same idea. Qualify or die.

“Compete” is the second novel in the “Atlantis Grail” series and was released in the year 2015. It is one thing to Qualify, but do you really have what is necessary to actually Compete?

Earth is close to being destroyed by an extinction level asteroid. Gwen Lark (teenage geek, nerd, and awkward smart girl), along with some of her friends were barely able to Qualify for rescue onboard one of the many ark-ships headed off to the ancient colony called planet Atlantis.

Now faced with a one year journey through space, life in the wondrously alien environment, as well as some tough life choices, Gwen’s got to figure out who or just what she is going to become. Civilian or Fleet Cadet? Extraordinary or average? Lover or friend?

Will she be able to make new friends? Can she trust her old ones, like the Earth special operative and sexy high school crush Logan Sangre?

Time and again, her uncanny ability to come up with the best possible answer in a crisis is what saves her life as well as others. Now, her unique Logos voice makes her a very valuable commodity to the Atlanteans. So much so that her mysterious commanding officer Aeson Kassiopei, who also is Imperial Prince of Atlantis, has taken a rather personal interest in her.

Before the end of their journey, Gwen has to convince him that she has got what it takes to compete in the lethal Games of the Atlantis Grail. It gets more and more apparent that the life of her family as well as the rest of Earth depends on it.

“Win” is the third novel in the “Atlantis Grail” series and was released in the year 2017. The Games are Forever! It was one thing to Qualify and Compete, now she has to Win.

Gwen Lark is one of the lucky ones. She is one of several million teen refugees to escape the extinction-level asteroid that was barreling toward Earth and make it to the ancient colony planet of Atlantis.

However, Atlantis is an odd new world with a blazing white sun and a higher gravity, where nothing is like it is expected to be. The new arrivals coming from Earth are now going to belong to majority class of non-citizens that face a lifetime of limited rights and hard work.

To make things worse, Gwen’s powerful and rare talent, her Logos voice, is now viewed as a possible weapon to be exploited by the Imperator, and a threat to the Kassiopei Imperial Dynasty and its uncompromising control over the Atlantean people.

She is given a declaration of love from a rather unexpected source. The wedding date is set, however, before she is able to be joined with her true love, she is required to compete in the lethal and savage Games of the Atlantis Grail to save everybody she cares about.

She must figure and fight her way through the toughest and most sophisticated contest that she has ever faced. Horrifying Ordeals and some impossible Challenges, vicious secret hitmen, and ruthless skilled Competitors, and some dubious teammates she has to work with but are unable to trust, are just the start.
