Velda Johnston was a published American author. She was known for writing novels in the Gothic Romance genre. She has used the pen name of Veronica Jason to write as well.

Velda was born in 1912. She grew up in Pasadena, California, where she also received her education. She was a student in high school when she was able to sell her first short story. She continued her education at UCLA on scholarship. There her major was journalism and she worked on the UCLA newspaper writing articles.

The author would get married to Robert Heslop. In the early fifties, they decided that it was a good time to move to New York. There they had two residences and split their time between their Manhattan apartment and their Sag Harbor nineteenth century farmhouse. The residence was formerly owned and lived in by the whaler turned Argonaut Samuel Tribie Hildreth Junior.

Her work has been featured in different American magazines and international ones too over the course of four decades, both fiction and nonfiction. Velda included in her writing many examples of different young women who go after fulfillment and happiness in an independent and assertive way.

Early novels written by the author were in the United States, but she moved on to putting more foreign settings into play for her later works. Her novel A Howling in the Woods was adapted in 1971 to a television movie. Directed by Daniel Petrie and starring Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman, a homemaker named Liza is trying to vacation in the woods but keeps finding that her time is interrupted not only by her husband trying to get in touch with her but by a strange howling at night.

Velda passed away in 1997.

The only person that seems to even be nice to her at all is the manager of the hotel. Lisa got the hotel from her uncle, but it seems like the handsome manager alone is kind to her. She cannot say the same confidently for the rest of the residents.

With Lisa being worried about things such as the rumors of the death of a child and the howling that she keeps hearing at night that she thinks might be a dog but isn’t sure, she’s got to figure things out. Are these signs that worse is on the way yet? With Lisa’s life potentially in danger, she has to find out who is out to get her before it is too late.
