Focusing on the Gothic horror and family saga genres, V.C. Andrews was a highly influential American author. Having much of career run throughout the greater part of the twentieth century, she died in 1986 at the age of 63 after a highly successful writing career. Her name is now an extremely successful commercial asset that is still in use today.
Early and Personal Life
An American author raised in the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, V.C. Andrews was born on June the 6th, 1923. Dying of breast cancer on the 19th of December, 1986, she had a long and illustrious career spanning out across her 63 years. Now with her name being officially declared an asset by the IRS, her estate has gotten a ghost-writer in the form of Andrew Neiderman to continue her legacy.
Starting out as an artist, she led a successful early career as a commercial artist, as well as a portrait painter. Suffering from serious back problems and pains due to a fall down a set of stairs at her school, she subsequently developed arthritis later on in life. This meant that for much of her life she was wheel-chair bound, as well as having to use crutches for a large portion of it.
Moving into writing later on, she began to get herself published as she moved away from her art and onto her career as an author. With a strong predilection for page-turners, she always made claim to being an author you couldn’t put down. This is an ethos that was to determine much of her career, as it defined her work and who she was as an author of vastly popular and influential novels.
Writing Career
Her first novel, ‘Flowers in the Attic’, was published in 1979 after she got the instructions to ‘spice it up’ when she first submitted it in 1975. Although she initially wrote a book titled ‘Gods of Green Mountain’, this was to be published posthumously in 2004 as an e-book.
Every year after her first novel was published though, she was to release another book to much acclaim as well. Following her own formula, V.C. Andrews has made a career out of strictly regimenting how her books are ordered and serialized. Focusing on female protagonists, she would organize her work into a set of five books as they spanned out over a series.
The initial three novels would base themselves around the main protagonist, whilst the fourth would go onto looking into other family members or their children. With the fifth book there would then be a prequel to the entire series overall. This was all soon to change though when her publishers mentioned that this should maybe be altered for the future, which her ghost-writer did so with the ‘Orphans’ series, and continued to do so for all the subsequent series to follow.
All of this has helped lead to the critical acclaim and popularity that she was to enjoy throughout her lifetime. Still with work being published under her name and a total of over twenty book series, her legacy is still going strong to this day. With worldwide appeal, this brand shows no signs of slowing down any-time soon as it continues to grow day-by-day.
Flowers in the Attic
As well as being the book that effectively launched V.C. Andrews literary career, it also had not just one, but two film adaptations produced around it. One in 1987 by the director Jeffrey Bloom and another in 2014 for the Lifetime channel. With such a legacy around it, it’s easy to see why Andrews became so popular as a writer. In this Gothic romance there are a group of four children struggling to survive as they’re locked away in the attic in their grandparents house by their mother.
Having been innocent and carefree up until the point of a major tragedy, they now spend their days hidden away as secrets, effectively kept from the world at large. Faced with the prospect of having to spend forever up there as their mother remains distraught, they attempt to come to terms with their own impending fate. Dealing with the betrayal and heartbreak of a mother who’s effectively abandoned them, they start to deal with their own conflicting emotions in a very real way.
As they attempt to confront the anger they feel towards their mother for what she’s done, they look inside themselves as they come together and manage as best they can. Will they ever find out the truth behind their fate and what it was that caused their mother to act in such a manner? Can they make it out of there or are they fated inside the attic forever? What will become of them as they remain ‘flowers in the attic’?
Heaven
The first of the Casteel series, this novel originally came out in 1985 and was to mark the beginning of a five part set of books. Looking into the goings on of a West Virginian family, it charts the progress of the daughter named Heaven as she overcomes the many hardships that have beset them all. Born to young teenage mother who died during her childbirth, she’s now being sold along with her other siblings by her much hated father.
In the first of the series the readers are introduced to the protagonist Heaven, who here is found to be the kind and attractive daughter of a mean father. With a nasty stepmother too, she’s worked hard by them both, that is until the stepmother runs away. That leaves her at the hands of her malicious father who decides to do something even more wicked than anything he’s concocted previously.
It is soon that the unthinkable is done and she’s sold to a couple whereby she forms a bond with the downtrodden and bullied husband. This leads to more torment as Heaven is subjected to further abuse from the wife. What follows are a harrowing sequence of events where everyone has a part to play in her and her much beloved siblings fate. Always hoping for the best, she attempts to keep herself strong fighting to retain her sense of self amidst all the turmoil.
Although this is regarded as a tragedy, it offers glimmers of hope as Heaven remains a resilient protagonist throughout in what is the beginning of an ongoing saga.

First 5 of the Dollinger Series were amazing and the last one or two that came out blew my mind as well. Love how you explained her formula, because one of the best books (imo) is why the grandmother is the way she is. If y’all haven’t read the Mirror Sisters Series, please do, it’s so good! Literally could not put it down! I talk about those books all the time, to anyone that will listen! I also liked the Black Cat Series as well….I’ve got a lot that I haven’t read from local used book store, based on my favorites, what would you suggest?
I have been reading VC Andrews books since I was a teenager! I have not missed a book yet. Love her books!!
Love the books!! When u start to read them make sure u know what’s in the series!! Can’t wait till the new movies come out.
I’ve been an avid reader of VC Andrews books since I was a teenager in the 1980’s. Virginia’s sister-in-law Joan bought one of my dad’s paintings. When he realized who she was he asked if I could contact her because I was such a huge fan. She was so gracious & nice. Also she sent me a huge box of books & books on tape. I’m still enjoying them!
I just started rereading i have all the original one, I kept buying but could not make it through the runaway series and gave away like 8 or more books, sorry…..they were just not the same…but I love the original 25/26 books..
I started reading her books years ago and read maybe 30 or more and then didn’t read for awhile. I used to go to a used book store and buy them but wouldn’t read till I had all the ones in the series. All the book stores closed around me and I couldn’t find any for years. I even went to libraries around me and couldn’t find her books. Now that I’m retired I started to read again and asked Siri and got hooked up here. I’m going to try to buy some again. I threw all my books away so can’t remember what series I read last. So thank you for this information.
Hi Jennie, love your comment. If you could let me know once a place to buy all of her books, I’d love to know please. I’ve got quite a few of her books but some of her older ones are harder to find. Thanks.

I was wondering if they forgot that the Cutler Family series was next in line for movies and are they gonna make it into a movie series?
I have every book except any that was being sold after echoes in the walls they use to tell us when the next book is coming out and the name of it and give us a short preview but they don’t anymore. wish they would continue cause I don’t know what is next
Totally agree I miss that too..I almost have every book except for Eden’s Children , Little Paula & any e-books that don’t come in hard copy. I wish they would allow the options of e-books & physical copies.
I love and enjoy all the the movies and books
Do I need to order the DVD movie Rain to get the final book in that series. “Gathering Clouds”
I have most of V.C Andrew’s books. I’m having a hard time figuring out the order in what to read them. Any help appreciated! (I’ve read some, but over the years I haven’t kept up. So now I’m lost. HELP! 🙂
Where in particular are you lost? I would start with the Dollanganger and Casteel series as they were ones by V.C. mostly while Andrew Neiderman wrote a lot of the others.
I love all her books I just so happened to see a trailer for the movie and it was so good then I started to get into the books and I think it was a blessing in disguise and I just want to thank her and you guys
HI Jen,
If you have the most recent novel on the first few pages gives you the list of books in order, I would go from what books you have then purchase what you dont have in that particular series
Hope this helps
This is not very hard to figure out. There are several lists on line and in the books that tell you the order.
This is just my opinion, but I don’t think you need to read the series’ in any special order. Obviously, I would suggest reading a series in the order it is published, because the plot makes the most sense. But as someone who has read many of V C Andrews’ books over the years, I don’t even think you need to read every series. If you just want to read the best of V C Andrews, fans have rated all the books on goodreads. If you look up V C Andrews’ wikipedia page, the article lists all the series’ in order of publication, in case you want to read them all from start to finish.
I own every single V.C Andrews book available but Gods Of Green Mountain that I can not find anywhere.I have been reading.
It is only available as a digital book. You can purchase it on Amazon.
I don’t have an amazon account. I am wondering when The Woman Beyond The Attic is coming out though?
That was released on February 1st, 2022.
Well Walmart has not gotten it in as of yet. Can’t wait to get that book plus the other ones that are coming out.
Its been out for months now. Wal-Mart is not the only place available. And you do not need an Amazon account to otder. You could also try your local library.
I just bought The Woman Beyond The Attic recently and I just started to read it but got side tracked from reading the book.
V.C.Andrews are the only novels I read. I had some of the books but lost them when I was moving I am so sorry that I lost them. I now want to get all of the books
I ordered most of my V.C. Andrews books off of ebay or the book stores they showed. Good luck, they are worth purchasing again. 🙂
That is how I got all my V.C Andrew books plus I also went to a lot of goodwill stores, too.
My Grandmother bought Flowers In The Attic for me when I was 14 years old. And I now have 90% of Books written by and written under VC Andrews. I love the way the books are written so that the reader can feel the emotions of the characters.
