Trixie Belden Series
Trixie Belden is a mystery series by Julie Campbell and other authors who wrote under the Kathryn Kenny pseudonym. The series star Trixie, a bold teenage girl whose investigative skills are way beyond average, and the friends she shares these adventures with. Thanks to her detective skills, Trixie leads her friends to solve different mysteries in the Sleepside neighborhood. This series was written from the 1940s to the 1980s, making it ideal for readers looking for contemporary young adult books. The writing is flawless, and it is incredible what these kids are able to do with minimal help from the adults.
The Secret of the Mansion
The Secret of the Mansion is the first book in the Trixie Belden series. This book stars Trixie Belden, a 13-year-old innovative girl, and her friends Honey Wheeler and Jim Frayne. Trixie’s brothers are going to camp for the summer, which means she will be alone with her parents at their farm throughout this period. For a while, Trixie thinks that she will be bored, but when a millionaire’s daughter moves in next door, things start looking up. Trixie and her friends will enjoy a splendid summer hanging out and exploring in the neighborhood, learning new things, and bonding over shared experiences.
One thing that stands out is how handy these kids are, especially when faced with tough situations. Trixie and friends knew how to take care of snake bites, make outdoor showers, respond calmly to other everyday matters. This book was first written in 1948, so the setting is reminiscent of this era. However, many other factors make this a timeless read. For one, this story shows how different we are in personality but also the same in many other things. Honey and Trixie come from different backgrounds, but they manage to create a great friendship by focusing on the similarities rather than their differences.
Trixie is a detective, much like Nancy Drew, but she is also a good and fun friend. Together with Jim and Honey, Trixie will be hunting for the treasure they think is hidden in Jim’s uncle’s old house. This will land them in trouble, but these three are teenagers on a mission. They work to accomplish their mission despite the dangers. Trixie comes off as a tomboyish adolescent who doesn’t shy away from tough situations. Honey seems timid, which is understandable given her background, but things change when she is pushed beyond her comfort zone. Jim is a blend of tough and tender, and he always strives to tell the truth even when doing so will land him in trouble. There are adults in these kids’ lives, and it is fun to meet them all and see how they interact with the adventurous trio.
It is easy to see why children love this series. The adventures the kids engage in are epic, and even for adults, this story will take them down memory lane. The Secret of the Mansion is a mix of lighthearted, serious, and normal teenage life. Jim’s story covers the serious part, as his story is quite tragic. Trixie and Honey’s funny troubles make up the lighthearted bit, while the friends’ issues are characteristic of teenage life. The story flows very well, and it helps that the target audience can identify with most of the characters.
The Red Trailer Mystery
The Red Trailer Mystery is the second book in the Trixie Belden series. In this story, Trixie and Honey are going to be searching for Jim, who ran away before anyone told him that he is the Frayne fortune heir. Jim had come to Sleepyside, New York, in search of his uncle. Sadly, Jim learns that his uncle died in the hospital. When he thinks that his evil step-father may be planning to take him, Jim secretly leaves town. As Trixie and Honey track him across upstate New York, the girls will uncover more secrets. With the help of Miss Trask and a few more friends they make along the way, overcoming different challenges becomes easy.
There are three mysteries in this book. First is the mystery behind Jim’s disappearance. Jim had talked about volunteering as a counselor in a neighboring camp, but the girls are not sure about his exact location. Next is the mystery of the trailer thieves taking property and trailers from travelers. Trixie and Honey follow the thieves in order to gather more evidence, but this puts them in harm’s way. Lastly, the camper Robin family mystery. These mysteries will at different points, lead the kids into trouble, but they also have loads of fun along the way. Trixie and Honey will also get a lot of help from Nat, the farmer, and his wife.
The cookie-cutter villains are the bad guys, and it is funny to see how Trixie, Honey, and Jim manage to outsmart them. Honey’s Governess is always patient with the children, and it is impressive how free the teenagers are to explore their surroundings. Like other books in the series, the friendships between these kids are at the heart of this story. The reader gets to interact more with Trixie and Honey and see how their friendship develops over time. Honey’s strength is growing, and she not only stands up to kidnappers who are out to get her, but she also extends her kindness to those that need it. At the end of the book, everyone is taken care of. The reader also gets to meet Trixie’s brothers when they come home from camp.
The Red Trailer Mystery is an intriguing story of friendship, mysteries, and adventure. It is the story of a missing child healing from the loss of someone he loves, and two friends determined to ensure he gets his inheritance. There are many laugh-out-loud moments in this story as well as tense ones, especially when the girls run into the bad guys. Fortunately, everything goes well, and the book ends without a cliff hanger. Join Trixie, Honey, and Jim on their adventures and take a trip back to your childhood when life was less complicated. The book flows well, and you can read it all in one sitting.
