Hope’s Peak
Hope’s Peak is the first installment in the Harper and Lane book series. In Hope’s Peak, Jane Harper the ex-San Francisco cop is now working as a detective for the North Carolina Police Department. Harper has worked with the San Francisco Police Department for almost a year, and she is more than dedicated to her work. Stu Raley, her partner, on the other hand, has had a relationship with Harper for quite some time. The book begins as these two detectives are called to a crime scene where a dead body had been found in a cornfield. The body belonged to a young girl, who had been raped and tortured for quite some time before she was strangled to death. Then, a crown of thorns was fitted on her head. In less than three months, this was the second body that was found. However, this time around, a witness had seen a naked man, who had a pillowcase on his head at the crime scene. As Harper’s team continue with the investigation, Jane’s captain gives Harper a file that is from more than years ago, of a case that was much similar to the one, she was working on.
The police detectives then head to a local nursing home with the aim of interviewing the officer who had worked on a similar case more than thirty years ago. The team of detectives hopes to uncover a huge cover-up that happened many years ago to ensure that tourism money keeps flowing into the small town. The police officer who had worked on the case was one Lloyd Claymore. Llyod Claymore informs Harper that there were several other killings many years ago, that was much similar to the killings that were currently happening. Claymore sends Harper to the direction of one Ida Lane, whose mother had been one of the victims back in the year 1985. Ida Lane is a young lady who can sense one person’s thought whenever she comes into contact with them. Lane and Harper make an exceedingly odd team as the somewhat reckless killer continue to claim more lives. From the look of things, the killer has brutally killed more than ten girls, and Jane Harper is more than determined to locate the killer and be able to bring the killer to justice.
Harper eventually receives assistance from the children of the first victim and can bring the killer to justice. With that said, Hope’s Peak is a brilliant book that deals with an extremely dark topic that involves the KKK, racism, the killing of black girls and a huge police cover-up.
