He liked singing and was part of school choirs and was offered a spot in the Guildford Cathedral Choir.
He first auditioned for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone without having read the books. His casting as Draco Malfoy was widely approved and he continued to appear in the series. He won a Disney Channel Kids Award and started a fan club called Official Tom Felton Fan Club. He continued to appear in other movies and presented Liz Carnell with a Pride of Britain Award for work done on bullying awareness.
Tom has also done work for charity, visiting the Denver Children’s Hospital and doing a sketch for Red Nose Day in 2011. He has also appeared on Adrenaline Junkie with Jack Osbourne doing different stunts and was in the movie The Disappeared in 2009. He took a turn at music in 2010 when he released the song “Hawaii” on independent record label Six String Productions, run by himself and two others.
Felton continued to appear in other films, such as White Other and Get Him to the Greek. He has won MTV Movie Awards twice for playing the best villain back to back in 2010 and 2011. He is also known for having a crush on friend and actress Emma Watson, who has also noted that she had a crush on him as well (although at different times).

Felton has now also become a published author with the release of his book Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard. It is a nonfiction book that talks plenty about his time acting in the Harry Potter Franchise. It was number one on the NYT nonfiction bestseller list for that week when it debuted. He has two dogs, one a black lab named Willow and a yellow lab named Forrest.
Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard is a nonfiction memoir from Tom Felton. The book first came out in 2022 and was a top New York Times best seller! Readers probably already know Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies, and here in his book he goes into being the character and all about his life while on the screen and off.
Felton is the first to admit that his adolescence was not the typical experience. He became more famous after appearing in films early on, but it was becoming Draco Malfoy that truly made him known to a wide audience. He would play the blond villain Draco for the next decade and become part of the huge phenomenon that was the franchise.
It may have seemed like a glamorous life, but Felton would just go back to his regular life as a teen going to a regular school and trying to fit in when he was not busy filming. He pours a lot of humor and honesty into this book, telling readers what it was like being part of the wizarding world while growing up but then also having to go back and experience what it was like to be a muggle.
There are also many great stories about the early days of acting, including one noted tale where he’s taken for Macaulay Culkin, another actor with similar features. He also relays a story where he was asked whether he was familiar with the books and chose a very Slytherin move where he revealed that he was familiar with them even though he had not read them at all.
Tom includes his experience working with more experienced thespians as well, including Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman, as well as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson and the many other relationships that he made over the course of filming for a decade. This includes Emma specifically, who he grew really close to.
Tom also reflects on fame and its highs and lows, and learning to make his way through life after having had such a huge experience. All in all, check out Beyond the Wand to catch all of the Harry Potter stories and more from the actor who lived it!
