Thom Hartmann
Thom Hartmann is a progressive radio talk show host, retired businessman, and author. He was born on May 7, 1951 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he grew up, and was one of Jean and Carl Thomas Hartmann’s four kids.

Interested in politics from a young age, he was raised in a Midwestern, conservative household with a right-wing point of view.he campaigned with his staunch Republican dad for Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential election at the age of thirteen.

Hartmann, even though he was a “gifted” student, he was expelled from his high school in the tenth grade for starting a paper that protested the Vietnam War. He would later earn his GED.

He enrolled at Lansing Community College and transferred to Michigan State University, majoring in electrical engineering. In 1968, he opened his first business, a repair shop called “The Electronics Joint” which was located right next to Michigan State University. At this same time, he became a part time disc jockey at WITL-FM, a local country music station.

With Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Hartmann protested against the Vietnam War.

Since his childhood, he had been interested in spirituality and consciousness, and by 1969 his interest evolved from hippie subculture to Christian mysticism. During this same year, he met Master Stanley, the head of the Coptic Center. In the year 1971 he was ordained as a Minister with Coptic Fellowship International. He’s been a keynote speaker at many Coptic Conferences nationally.

Thom is also an internationally known speaker on communications and culture, and he’s also an innovator in the fields of ecology, democracy, and psychiatry. His work is award winning and in print in more than a dozen languages on four continents.

Thom is the former executive director of a residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed and abused kids and has helped set up famine relief programs, communities, and hospitals for blind or orphaned children in Colombia, India, Uganda, Australia, and the United States.

From the year 1968 to 1978, he worked as a DJ, news anchor, reporter, and program director for various radio stations. After he started several businesses, he went back into radio in Spring of 2003 as a nationally syndicated talk show host. The Thom Hartmann Program, which has been on the air on radio stations from coast to coast and on Satellite Radio, runs from 11 AM until 2 PM CT.

Thom started his business career during the early seventies while still in his twenties, co-founding The Woodley Herber Company, which sold potpourris, herbal products, and teas, and it operated until 1978.

During this same time, he obtained three degrees in homeopathic medicine and Herbology. One is a PhD in homeopathy, while the other is a masters in herbal medicine. Thom also has an honorary PhD from Goddard College in Vermont, where he was a visiting instructor. He was rostered as a psychotherapist by the State of Vermont for five years, and has a Trainer’s Certification in NLP from The Society of NLP.

During the early seventies, he founded and ran The Michigan Healing Arts Center. And in the following years has started two advertising agencies (Ter Graphics in the seventies and Chandler, MacDonald DBA The Newsletter Factor in the eighties), a travel agency (International Wholesale Travel), and starting relief programs on five continents while working with the Salem International organization.

He later moved to New Hampshire in order to start The New England Salem Children’s Village, which still operates in Rumney, New Hampshire. He was its Executive Director for five years, and served on the board of directors for over 25 years.

Thom is married to Louise, with whom he has three kids. With Louise, he has built seven businesses together, sold many of them off, and retired five different times during their long marriage. He’s been a vegetarian since his teenage years, and is has ADD.

Thom is a four-time Project Censored-award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of over twenty books in print. He invented the “hunters in a farmer’s world” reframe for ADHD and has written five books on the subject.

“The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight” is a non-fiction book that was released in the year 1998. Everything seems to be collapsing all around us: genetic engineering, global famine, ecodamage, virulent diseases, wars, the end of cheap oil, water shortages. There’s still something we can do about it and make a world that is going to work for us and for our children’s children.

The inspiration for Leonardo DiCaprio’s web film Global Warming, this book details what’s happening to our planet, the reasons for the blind behavior of our culture, and how we can fix this problem.

Thom’s comprehensive book, which was originally published back in 1998, has become one of the fundamental handbooks of the environmental activist movement. Now, with some updated and fresh material and a focus on political activism and its effects on corporate behavior, the book helps readers comprehend, and heal, our relationship to the world, to one another, and to our natural resources.

“The Edison Gene” is a non-fiction book that was released in the year 2003. Thomas Edison got expelled from school for behavior that would today have him labelled as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), however his mom understood how to salvage his self esteem and ready him for a successful life.

Thom shows that the impulsiveness, creativity, and distractibility which are characteristic of ADHD aren’t signs of a disorder at all, rather components of a highly adaptive skill set that’s utilized by our gathering and hunting ancestors. These characteristics have been critical to the development and survival of our modern civilization and are going to be crucial while humanity faces some new challenges in the future.

Thom examines latest discoveries confirming the existence of an ADHD gene and the global catastrophe from forty thousand years ago which triggered its development. Citing some examples of significant innovators in our modern era, he argues that kids who possess this “Edison gene” have neurology which is wired to give them some brilliant success as inventors, innovators, explorers, and entrepreneurs. He offers up some concrete strategies for helping out Edison-gene kids reach full potential and shows that instead of being “problems”, these kids are a crucial gift to our society and the whole world.
