Overall, Brooks has been a able to sell more than 21 million copies of his novels in print all over the world. Because of his commercial success, he is regarded as one of the biggest selling fantasy writers of all time.
Other than novels, Brooks has also written a couple of movie scripts in his career. He was born on January 08, 1944 as Terrence Dean Brooks in Sterling, Illinois, United States. Brooks was actually born and brought up in the rural Midwestern town of Sterling.
As a child and a growing adult, he used to often dream about stories based around the Sinnissippi Park, which went on to become the setting of his highly successful Word & Void trilogy. He graduated from the Hamilton College with an undergraduate degree of B. A in English Literature in the year 1966.
After that, Brooks obtained his J.D from the School of Law at the Washington and Lee University. Brooks began working as a practicing attorney before going on to become a full time writer. As of now, he lives in Seattle, Washington and spends most of his time writing novels for his series’.
Brooks had been fascinated by the art of writing from a very young age. He used to write several short stories in his high school days. Most of his early writing included works of science fiction, fiction and non-fiction, and western genres.
During one of his college days, Brooks received a copy of The Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkien and was highly inspired by the description of the story of the novel. He was so much fascinated by it that he decided to write one of his own in the same genre.
Eventually, Brooks completed his first novel in the year 1977. The novel was titled ‘The Sword of Shannara’, which went on to become a critical success and also became the first ever fantasy novel to feature in the New York Times bestselling list. The book stayed on the bestseller list continuously for a period of 5 months.
After writing and publishing a few sequels in the series, Brooks decided to change his course towards writing another novel series, which came to be known as the Landover series. Over the next 14 years, Brooks kept on writing highly successful books, which kept on increasing his popularity as a noteworthy author of the fantasy genre.
In the meanwhile, he got married with Judine. He now lives happily along with her in the Pacific Northwest. Brooks has been involved in movie deal with the Warner Bros for one of his successful novels. The movie rights of the highly successful Shannara series have also been bought by Warner Bros company, which about to start the shooting the first movie based on the novel, The Elfstones of Shannara.
The Shannara series written by Terry Brooks consists of a total of 28 novels published between the years 1977 and 2005. Brooks had written the novels of the series under different sub-series’, mainly in a sequence of several trilogies.
Over the years, Terry Brooks kept on improving his craft of writing by penning down exciting novel stories every year. He has proven that his skills in creative writing have only become perfect after years of hard work. This can be understood from the fact that his novels have frequently featured in the New York Times bestseller list.
Unlike the way Brooks makes his novels look easy to write, he believes that writing requires a lot of determination, commitment, passion and patience. He also believes that the writers should be prepared to face a few rejections in the beginning and believes that it is important not to lose hope and keep continuing with their dedication and determination.
Brooks has written a memoir in order to help the younger authors in getting an idea of how to write effectively. He has very well explained the process of writing a story beginning from the very first step of conceiving an idea up to the creation and publication of the novel.
The first novel written by Brooks in The Original Shannara Trilogy series was ‘The Sword of Shannara’. The novel was published in the year 1977 by the Orbit publishing house. The plot of the novel revolves around the lives of the main characters, Allanon, Balinor, During, Shea Ohmsford, Dayel, Hendel and Flick.
The opening sequence of the novel shows the effects of the ancient wars of the Evil on the mankind. The wars had resulted in the destruction of the world and has forced the humans to compete with other races such as dwarfs, gnomes, elves and trolls.
The main protagonist of the novel, Shea Ohmsford is introduced as a half-elf in the peaceful region of the Shady Vale. Shea is not aware of the troubles faced by the human race until Shea comes across the forbidding and the giant Allanon, who has special Druidic powers. Shea comes to know of about the Warlock Lord, who wishes to destroy the world based on his deadly plots.
The only resistance to the growing darkness and its harmful effects on the human race is the Sword of Shannara. However, the sword is usable only by the real heir of Shannara. Shea, being the last living heir of the Shannara, holds the hopes of all the mankind.
Shea is constantly under attack by the dread minion of Evil, a Skull Bearer, who flies to the Shady Vale in order to kill her and cause further destruction of the human race. Shea keeps fleeing from place to place in order to save himself from getting killed at the hands of the Skull Bearer and also strives to save the human world from getting destroyed by the Evil.
The second novel of the series was published in the year 1982 by the Mass Market Paperback publishing house. It was titled ‘The Elfstones Of Shannara’. This novel is based on the lives of the characters The Dagda Mor, Eventine Elessedil, The Reaper, Allanon, Ander Elessedil, Stee Jans, Eretria, Amberle Elessedil, Wil Ohmsford, and The Ellcrys.
The plot of the novel shows the Elves under constant threat from the Evil. This is seen from the fact that the ancient tree created by the Elven magic is dying. Wil Ohmsford is introduced as a guard of the Amberle. He is also required to carry out the job of gathering new seeds of the tree. However, he is forced to face the most fearsome of all demons, the Reaper. Wil is on his own without any power to save himself from the demons and also the tree.

Been hooked to terry brooks ever since the 1st one in 1977
Love the story’s
Keep it going

I was 13, spotted Tangle Box in hard cover. The artist rendering on the cover drew me in. I couldn’t tell which female was supposed to be mother nature and I had to find out, my aunt purchased it for me. To my dismay, shortly after cracking into it I realized it was the 4th in a series. My aunt ran back to media play and purchased me not only the first three books in the Landover series but The Shannara Trilogy and The Heritage of Shannara series. I’ve been hooked ever since. I sincerely thank you Mr. Brooks for all your words…….and Abernathy……I love Abernathy!!!
Gifted Authors like Terry Brooks have filled my life with places and people heroes created to exhibit actions built upon the Law motivated by circumstance to live and react within its boundaries.
Many years ago (1977)a college freshmen browsing the bookstore came across a tradeback book with the interesting title of “The Sword of Shannara”. Cracking the book open my eyes fell upon wonderful the illustrations which pulled me into reading the book. Once started I couldn’t stop I read every sequeal, and couldn’t wait till the next. Thank you Mr Brooks for creating a incredible story.
Shea Omsford was a male, not female.
