Slow Burn is the debut novel in the Slow Burn series by Terrence McCauley. This story is set in Manhattan during the 1930’s.
The time is August in 1932. The city is in a tough spot and things are not looking up. Not only are the citizens struggling to deal with the effects of the Great Depression, a huge heatwave is spreading through the city and making everything that much more difficult. The people of the city are on edge.
As more and more businesses begin to close down, the people waiting in line for food only grow. Unrest and stress lead to riots happening almost every day. Then readers meet main character Charlie Doherty, a detective with the New York Police Department. He’s also corrupt.
When he gets the assignment to check out a corpse located in a flophouse, the detective senses that this not just an open and shut case. There’s way more here than one would initially suspect. The girl died, but the question is who did it and why? Charlie looks into the case further and quickly finds out that her murder is linked to some very powerful people.
In fact, it might be a direct link to one of New York’s families with a ton of influence and power. The case could end up being another dose of gasoline on an already hot burning fire. The result will be a long awaited chase that involves the detective, taking Charlie from the wealthy buildings and Fifth Avenue section of the city to the Lower East Side’s slums and ultimately to City Hall.
The detective’s deeply involved in the case now, and he’s racing the clock. Does he have the time or the chance to discover who’s responsible? Can the city survive what it’s going through? Read this historical fiction book to find out!
The Fairfax Incident is the second novel in the Slow Burn series by Terrence McCauley. Pick up a copy of this book and travel back in time to New York City in the thirties. Simmering with tension, full of crime, a time when there was no legal alcohol allowed.
The year is 1933 and the setting is Manhattan. The main character from the first story is back again. However, Charlie is no longer serving with the NYPD. After The Grand Central Massacre, he was booted from the force. With no real options to him, he did the thing that he knows how to do best– detective work.
With a wealthy benefactor supporting him, Charlie’s been able to get his business as a private detective off of the ground. He has positioned himself to be a detective to the rich elite of the city and things are going well. With plenty of clients, Doherty cannot deny that the business is booming and he’s making headway.
The detective is bringing in the dough with some run of the mill cases. From socialites who have run away to spouses that have gone missing, he’s been knocking out the cases one by one. But when a huge case comes to him, Doherty’s going to have his work cut out for him. In this instance, it’s the rich widow Mrs. Fairfax.
She has hired Charlie to help her prove that her husband never killed himself. What was initially described as a suicide is in fact believed by the widow to actually be murder. The detective takes this case on at the urging of his benefactor. He thinks that he’ll be able to make some money proving that Walter Fairfax did in fact shoot himself to death after taking a call in the Empire State Building.
Having already been given a lump sum, he starts investigating and finds out more information than he bargained for. Not only was the husband living a double life, he was associated with various dangerous people. Still living, these individuals with their agenda could send NYC into a war. Doherty is taking on evil and powerful people. Will he succeed? Read this book to find out!
