Sweet Valley Twins is a series of children’s novels created by Francine Pascal. The books are spin-offs of the Sweet Valley High series. They take readers back to the younger days of some of Sweet Valley High’s most popular characters.
+The Story
The Sweet Valley High series took the world by storm when it premiered in 1983. The books were a big hit primarily because they were soap operas written for teens. The plots were outlandish and the cliffhangers were exaggerated.
Francine Pascal has been credited for introducing many a young girl to the reading habit via her books. The popularity of the Sweet Valley High Series was such that it spawned numerous spinoffs.
The first of these spinoffs was the Sweet Valley Twins series. While the Sweet Valley High books took place in high school, the Twins novels went back to the Middle School years to show the events that transformed Pascal’s characters into their Valley High versions.
As with most other spinoffs, the Sweet Valley Twins series centers on Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield. Elizabeth and Jessica are twins that live in Sweet Valley, California. When they are first introduced in these books, Jessica and Elizabeth are students at Sweet Valley Middle school.
The siblings are identical in every physical aspect, from their long golden hair to their tan and even the dimple they bear on their left cheek. They have always been close, best friends even.
Things begin to change when the twins enter sixth-grade. Jessica starts to pull away from Elizabeth. She is no longer content to be a carbon copy of her sister. And Elizabeth notices the attitude.
But there’s little she can do to prevent the change in dynamics. Pretty soon, Jessica is taking an interest in makeup, and her curiosity for boys skyrockets. And it isn’t just the cosmetic changes that trouble Elizabeth.
Jessica is getting mean. She’s walking with a snobbish crowd and she doesn’t care how many people she has to hurt if it means being the most popular girl in school.
While Elizabeth is initially troubled by her sister’s behavior, she begins to accept that maybe the separation between the twins is a natural consequence of growing up. And Elizabeth hasn’t been immune to those consequences either.
Where her sister has taken on a cruel and merciless persona, Elizabeth has become that much warmer. She abhors gossip and her interest in fashion is only minimal. She’d rather spend her free time reading and writing than partying with her friends
And the decision hasn’t made her any less popular. As the Sweet Valley Twins series progresses, it becomes clear that people love Elizabeth almost as much as they admire Jessica. She has no qualms about being the reliable more serious twin, the sort of girl that can keep a hold of a steady love interest rather than skipping from one boy to another.
For all intent and purpose, the Sweet Valley Twins series is a prologue to the Valley High series. The Twins books were written for Valley High readers who wanted to know how their favorite characters became the people they were in high school.
Francine Pascal attempts to answer those questions. She delves into Jessica and Elizabeth’s relationship, showing just how close the twins used to be and the events that eventually drove them apart.
+The Author
Francine Pascal is officially credited with creating and writing all the Sweet Valley books and their spinoffs. However, Pascal is technically just the creator. Most of the books were written by ghostwriters, though Pascal personally supervised the writing process.
With the Sweet Valley Twins series, Jamie Suzanne is often cited as the author. However, that is just a pen name crafted from the names of Pascal’s daughters and under which numerous ghostwriters work to produce the Sweet Valley Twins books.
Jamie Suzanne’s bio claims that she was born in 1955 in Iowa. It also says she has a supportive husband who assisters her in her writing process.
Most Sweet Valley fans know that there’s no such person as Suzanne. Pascal, the creator, was born in 1938 in Manhattan to an auctioneer for a father. She met her husband while attending New York University.
John Pascal and Francine worked together on a number of projects until his death in 1981.
The author created the Sweet Valley concept around the characters of Jessica and Elizabeth. She was fascinated by the idea that everyone has two sides to their personality: a good side and a bad side.
She saw her stories about a pair of twins, one good and the other quite bad, as a means of exploring that concept further. Pascal admits that she didn’t know the Sweet Valley books would be such big hits.
She already had a few series under her belt by this point. Pascal chose not to write the Sweet Valley books herself because she didn’t think her voice was suitable for teenage readers. Pascal’s earlier books were more adult-oriented and utilized significantly more sophisticated language.
Pascal turned to ghostwriters because she thought that would give her books a wider appeal. And she was right. Most kids of the 80s and 90s will attest to reading at least one Sweet Valley book at some point in their lives.
+Best Friends
Jessica and Elizabeth are identical twins. They are also best friends. They’ve been together since they were born. They have also always done everything together. But when they enroll in Sweet Valley Middle School everything changes.
As enthusiastic as Elizabeth is about working on the class newspaper, Jessica is more interested in joining all the pretty and popular girls in an exclusive club.
Elizabeth doesn’t like the turn her sister is taking. And it isn’t until she tries following Jessica into the Unicorns that Elizabeth realizes that she might be witnessing the beginning of the end of her close relationship with her twin.
+Teacher’s Pet
Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are talented dancers. They are by far the best pupils in their ballet class. But Jessica knows she’s even better than her sister Elizabeth. There is no doubt in Jessica’s mind that she deserves to do the solo in the recital.
But Jessica knows her teacher only has eyes for Elizabeth. No matter how hard Jessica works, it is Elizabeth who enjoys Madame Andre’s praise.
