American author Suzanne Brockmann is a writer of romantic fiction who’s produced a number of works that have been well-received within her field. Living just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, she currently resides with her husband and two children. Still writing today she continues to enjoy a long and illustrious career writing within the area of both romance and the military genres.
Early and Personal Life
Suzzanne Brockmann was born in 1960 and is an American author who has become well known for her romantic literature. Born and raised in New Jersey, she lives with her dogs which she cares for, as she continues to write her unique brand of fiction. Having attended the Boston University where she went to their ‘School of Broadcasting and Film’, she soon dropped out to join a band after studying both film and creative writing. This practice came back to her though after she began to focus on scripts for television, primarily that of ‘Star Trek’ novels, before finding what it was that she loved; romance stories.
This passion soon branched off into the military romance genre mixing both suspense and intrigue, as she created her ‘Tall, Dark and Dangerous’ series that looked into the lives and loves of a group of Navy SEALs. Writing this in 1996, she then went onto further refine and hone her chosen genre. All this led to her becoming a major proponent of the gay community, with her dealing sensitively with themes of homosexuality in her work. She has also shown her support by offering the proceeds of many of her books to various causes dedicated to helping gay rights. This was due in part to her gay son to whom she later dedicated the 2004 book ‘Hot Target’ to.
Writing Career
Publishing her first book,’Future Perfect’, a stand-alone novel brought out in 1993, Suzanne Brockmann entered the literary scene with what was to be her initial foray into the romance genre. This was followed shortly after with the book ‘Hero Under Cover’ in 1994, another romance that was well accepted in its time. With a number of subsequent works she soon progressed onto the military aspect of her career in the field of romance, as she honed and refined her craft.
Soon she brought out ‘Prince Joe’ that was to be the beginning of her ‘Tall, Dark and Dangerous’ series, which she first released in 1996 and was later re-issued in 2002. In this series there have been eleven titles so far. The year of 2000 was to see the start of her ‘Troubleshooter’ series which began with the novel ‘Unsung Hero’, a series to which there have been sixteen entries and counting.
Not without awards as well, she’s received the ‘Romance Writers of America’, or ‘RITA Award’, twice so far. USA Today have also featured her upon the ‘Romance Writers of America Honor Roll’ for her contribution to the genre. Being placed on the ‘New York Times’ bestseller’s list too, she’s also gained her fair share of commercial success too. This popularity looks set to continue, along with her influence on the genre, as she’s been hailed by various publications such as ‘Bay Windows’ and ‘Out’ as a strong proponent of the gay community with her positive depictions of homosexual relationships.
Prince Joe
Starting the ‘Tall, Dark and Dangerous’ series, this novel was first published by Suzanne Brockmann in June, 1996. Part of the military romance genre, it features the story of consultant Veronica St. John as she’s assigned to assist a man preparing for the mission of a lifetime. A European prince has been targeted by a group of terrorists putting his life in danger, so it’s up to someone to take his place impersonating him and covering his tracks in the process. The man assigned to this task is one Lieutenant Joe Catalanofto, a Navy SEAL given the mission due to his striking resemblance to the prince, along with his various set of skills.
One problem though; he really isn’t refined like a prince with his scruffy ways and military hardened attitude. Arrogant and self-assured he proves to a difficult challenge for her, as she attempts to overcome what is shaping up to be a major problem. He may have street-smarts, but he’s going to have trouble fitting into the aristocratic world of the prince, which is so far removed from his own lifestyle. Despite all this he’s confident he can do it. Neither one of them see what’s coming next though when they begin to fall for each other. Will Veronica be able to change this man into a prince? Can Joe overcome the terrorist threat that lies in wait for him? What will become of their relationship as he transforms into Prince Joe?
Future Perfect
This was the first novel to be published by Suzanne Brockmann, as it was released on the 1st of August, 1993. Seen as an early entry, this was where she was to originally find her voice within the romance genre, as she honed and refined her craft. For any fan of her work though, it can easily provide an insight into her early career, seeing where she’s come from and what she has to offer as an author of more straightforward romantic fiction.
Living in a small-town area of Massachusetts is one Juliana Anderson, who’s to be the protagonist of this particular story. Running her bed-and-breakfast she’s pretty content with her life, as she feels she has all that she wants and needs in the world. Romance has never even come into the picture, as she feels there’s no room for adventure in her self-contained world. This seems to be the case until one day when a stranger turns up who’s extremely handsome and rugged and he sweeps her off her feet. It soon transpires that maybe she did want more and what she wants is passion and romance. Will she be able to allow herself to get herself swept up in the moment and off her feet? Are the man’s intentions pure and what lies in store for them both and their relationship to be? What will become of Juliana’s life and does she have a perfect future with this intoxicating gentleman who seems to offer everything?
