Author James N. Cook (who is a veteran of the US Navy) writes the “Surviving the Dead” series of zombie apocalypse novels. The series is made up of novels and a novella. The series began publication in the year 2011, when “No Easy Hope” was released.

“No Easy Hope” is the first novel in the “Surviving the Dead” series, which was released in the year 2011. His name is Eric Riordan, a once wealthy man who lead an easy and comfortable life. Then his old friend Gabriel told him about the end of the world. Gabriel tried helping him. He instructed Eric in everything that he learned while he was a Scout Sniper in the Marine Corps. Every single hard lesson from many years in sand clogged battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. Eric did everything that he could to get ready. Eric thought he was ready, but he was wrong.

Everything was destroyed when the outbreak happened. The dead rose to devour the living, and the things mankind spent millennia toiling to build were laid to waste in just a matter of months. No one was spared, leaving just death and ashes behind them in their wake.

Every day is a struggle for those that are still alive. Even with the darkness and the danger, Eric still thinks there is a chance for the human race to rebuild. If he is able to make his way North and get Gabriel to help him, maybe they can find enough people to start once again. It is not going to be easy, however. Eric is going to have to make his way across the old world’s ruins, and along the way his will to live, his very soul, and humanity are going to be tested.

Eric has a truck. Eric has food, and his trusty rifle. He’s also got hope, most importantly of all. Hope is one powerful thing, but he is going to need so much more than just that to be able to survive the dead. This is just the beginning, and this is Eric’s story.

Eric is both well developed and likable, as is the survival group he is with. James Cook does a superb job of creating an engaging story with a balanced amount of action and human elements. The action is one of the biggest strengths of the book, it flows and was well written.

“This Shattered Land” is the second novel in the “Surviving the Dead” series, which was released in the year 2012. Eric Riordan does not go looking for trouble, it’s just that trouble has got a way of finding him.

Two years have gone by since the Outbreak occurred. Eric was able to join up with Gabriel and has been able to stay alive by getting to the peaks of the Appalachian mountains. Their supplies are beginning to run low, and they have enemies gathering, so the pair has to make their journey west off to Colorado.

On the journey, they will find some unexpected allies, reunite with some old buddies, and make some deadly enemies. As tough as life has been for them, the most dangerous times are coming. There is nothing easy at the end of the world.

For some readers, this book was just as good as the first one. It had well developed characters, plenty of heart and action, and the words flow like poetry. This book is tough to put down once you start it, and both the first two books are highly recommended to anybody that wants a zombie series with a fresh spin put on them.

“Warrior Within” is the third novel in the “Surviving the Dead” series, which was released in the year 2013. There are those that do not want peace.

The Free Legion declares war on the survivors living in Hollow Rock, and Gabriel and Eric find that they are drawn even deeper into this growing conflict. Aided by an emerging militia, as well as a tiny contingent of federal operatives, the pair of warriors has to find a way to beat an enemy. It is an enemy who will not yield and that is threatening to ruin all they have just grown to love.

In order to win, Gabriel has to become the leader that he was born to be. At the same Eric, who is haunted by all of his actions since the Outbreak, has to descend deeper into the heart of darkness.

This is a fight where nothing is what it appears to be. The tides of power are shifting, and very soon, there is a danger much greater than the living dead appear.

With each book, these books just keep getting better. This is another page turner that keeps readers up until the late hours, just reading away and looking to see what will happen next. Some enjoyed the action and suspense in this book, and they liked the new direction this book took.

“Fire in Winter” is the fourth novel in the “Surviving the Dead” series, which was released in the year 2014. With Civil War looming, Gabriel Garrett battles to keep his new home safe as well as the new life he has just begun. As he quickly learns, a man’s past has got a way of catching up with him, and Gabriel has got quite a few dark secrets of his own.

His world is shattered, and he walks a path of vengeance over a land where it is the dead that rule, and the living count their own lives in seconds. His enemy is the most lethal that he has ever faced. In this fight, there is no redemption, no justice, and no mercy. There is just revenge.

These books are quality entertainment that has readers hooked, and yearning for more of them. Some enjoyed reading a story from Gabriel’s perspective, as it gives you the view of an excellent character from these books. It also explores parts of his back story, too. This one ups the action factor, and the story was ramped up, as well.

First, they look for other people who have survived the deadly attack and hatch a plan to give themselves and the humankind a new start. Eric knows it very well that it is not going to be an easy task at all. He and his team have to walk across the old world’s ruins and undergo many difficulties and dangers that will test their will, their soul, and their humanity. Gabriel and Eric arrange pickup truck, collect food, gather whatever ammunition they can and head for the most difficult task of their lives. They remain hopeful of a positive outcome and feel that it is their hope that can keep them going all the way through.

Another exciting novel of this series is known as ‘The Killing Line’. It was also released as a Kindle edition in 2016. James has mentioned the same set of primary characters as in the other novels of the series. The story of this novel revolves mainly around Gabriel Garrett. He is said to have experienced many challenges when he was stationed in Iraq & Afghanistan. His days in the CIA and as a mercenary were not easy either. And the Outbreak was like the most difficult challenge of his life. But now, Gabriel faces a new challenge of fatherhood, which none of his expertise, training, or battlefield experience has trained him for. With new responsibilities of a family, Gabriel decides to move out of Hollow Rock and take shelter in the Colorado Springs.

Gabriel hopes to leave behind all the violence of the past and give a new start to his life in this growing city. In order to reach Colorado Springs, Gabriel Garrett has to cross the vast American plains and this journey is not going to be easy at all because the plains are filled with the undead. In spite of the numerous dangerous, Gabriel decides to take up the journey to enable his family to have a better future. Caleb Hicks and Eric Riordan accompany him. After a while into the journey, the caravan gets ransacked. As a result, the group is forced to walk on foot and endure the post-Outbreak world’s dangers. During the course of their journey, Gabriel Garrett and his group face criminal organizations, starvation, marauders, corrupt officials, and the dangerous wastelands. The things that could help them to survive all the dangers include their courage, will, resourcefulness, and the support of each other.
