Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen is a published author.
She never thought that when she grew up that she would be an author. When she was a child, she contemplated different career paths that she might take. She considered being a doctor, but then is afraid of blood. She could be a lawyer, but Sudipta does not like when she loses arguments. She considered being a model, a carpenter, a presidential candidate, an ambassador to the UN and more, but did not at the time consider being a writer.
In 2001, she was not on the path of being a writer at all. She had attended the California Institute of Technology and graduated with a BS in biology. She had been in Boston for a year and then had come back to Caltech as a PhD candidate in the field of developmental biology.
It was in that time frame that she gave birth to her first child, named Isabella. Sudipta did not intend to change her plans, and she figured that she would just take a long extended leave of maternity and then go back to graduate school. That eventually got shifted when she gave birth to her daughter, who she named Brooklyn. She now had two younger children and found herself more interested in being a parent than biology.
Sudipta also discovered that she had stories within her that she wanted to tell and to share with her daughters. She decided that she would attempt to get published and after being rejected several times finally found a success when Highlights for Children paid her for her first story in 2003.
Sudipta also was able to use her background in science as a base for her work. She started writing nonfiction directed at children, which extended to topics such as last minute science fair projects, autism, and biographies of individuals such as Jane Goodall and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
She had always loved picture books, so she worked on a variety of manuscripts, the majority of which were rejected. She kept working on them and her first book was called Tightrope Poppy, the High-Wire Pig, and it was illustrated by Sarah Dillard. It was released in 2006.
More picture books would come out from the author, such as The Mine-o-saur, Ballots for Belva: The True Story of a Woman’s Race for the Presidency, The Hog Prince, and more. She cites her children as being constant inspiration for her. For instance, Mine-o-saur came out of hearing the word ‘mine’ being shouted over and over.
The author is able to visit different schools to share what her experience has been and she is able to instruct children and adults on writing. She resides with her family in the state of New Jersey.
Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen is the author of several series for children, including Purrmaids, Disney Princess: Merida, Mermicorns, and The Adventures of Caveboy.
The Scaredy Cat is the first book in the Purrmaids series by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. If you love a good cute little book, you will fall for this chapter book series that is just perfect for any reader looking for a fluffy, light read.
Mermaid kittens are the cute little characters included in this book. Angel, Shelly, and Coral are all best friends. They really enjoy exploring through their Kittentail Cove. The first day that they are at sea school, the teacher asks if everyone would like to bring in something that they can share with the class that is special.
Angel and Shelly really want to go to Tortoiseshell Reef so that they can find a special treasure. The only problem is that the reef is really far away, located all the way out at the edge of the cove. Coral is afraid of swimming far away from home like that, but really wants to have a treasure to share with the others.
She is really feeling like a scaredy-cat, but she also wants to be bold and brave so that she can have something to share. Will she summon up her courage and go with her friends, or find that she’s too nervous to go on? Read this book to find out!
The Catfish Club is the second book in the Purrmaids series by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. This is the adorable followup to the first book that follows along with a trio of mermaid kittens as they live their best lives together.
Shelly, Coral and Angel are all really close. School is always the best, and they really like it, because they all get to be together there. Then their teacher gives them all an art project to do, and they’re really excited. They can’t wait to be covered in paint and glitter as they tackle their projects.
The only issue is that the Catfish Club is trying to destroy all of their fun. These are three other students and they happen to be kittens that are a little tougher than all of the rest. They also seem to think that when it comes to doing things, they are naturally the best.
Will Angel and the other kitties be able to avoid getting into any trouble with this crew of felines? Will everyone just get along and be able to focus on getting their art projects done and having a ton of fun while doing it? Read this book from Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen to find out!
