About Stuart Woods:
Stuarts Woods was an American novelist. He was born in Georgia in 1938 and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1959. He then enrolled in the National Guard before moving to New York to start a career in Advertising.
He then moved to London and spent a further 3 years working in advertising before deciding that he wanted a change and he began writing his first novel. It is at this time that he decided to move to Ireland where he lived a solitary life-style, only leaving his home to make money writing adverts for a local television.
He passed in 2022.
Sailing
Woods moved to Ireland in the 70s and this was where he fell in love with sailing. He spent many years competing in sailing competitions and learning how to be a better sailor. He finally bought his own boat when his Grandfather died and left him some money, so he could afford it. It was then that he took sailing more seriously and spent most of 1974 learning more about sailing.
Writing
Woods began writing about his experiences in his yacht races and he was published in 1977, with the book Blue Water, Green Skipper. It seemed like he had found an ideal career based on the thing he loved most, sailing.
Changing Plans
His second book was supposed to about another boat race that he was due to take part in, but the race was cancelled due to inclement weather, so he decided to drive around the UK and write a book about his adventures in county inns.
Chiefs
Woods then went on to write his first novel called Chiefs. He made the mistake of selling the book to publishers unfinished because he thought he would have gotten a lot more for it had he waited until the book was finished.
Norton were the company to publish the hard back, but he felt like the company let him down because they didn’t do much to promote the book. He then contacted Bentham Books, who published the paperback and it was much more successful.
Charlton Heston
In 1983, the book was made into a tv series staring Charlton Heston and Danny Glover. It was aired by CBS over three nights and it ended up being nominated for three Emmy Awards.
The popularity of the tv show meant that more people wanted to read the books and there was renewed interest the paperback version of the books and Woods won the Edgar Award for the Best First Novel.
Series Over Standalones
Woods is one of those authors who are more focused on the series of novels over the standalone. His most popular series is the Stone Barrington Novels. He has just released his 27th novel in the series and he has written 3 more novels, which are set to be released in 2014.
Who is Stone Barrington?
Stone Barrington is a counsel for a law firm. After he finished college, he joined the police and served for 14 years on the force. He left after disagreeing with his superiors and then got a job with the law firm. The novels tell the story of his exploits so far.
In the Stone Barrington novels, Woods is often congratulated for getting the law procedures correct when he has no background in law himself. It is noticed a lot and one fan asked how he gets it all right. He indicates that he is a massive fan of law procedurals such as LA Law and Law & Order, so gets all of his knowledge from there. He has made a few friends who are Lawyers, so if he gets anything wrong, they tell him.
Holly Barker
Holly Barker is a character in another series of books that he writes. She is an ex army officer, and navy-brat. She left the army because of a sex scandal and she has to learn how to live the civilian life. She begins her new life as the Chief of Police and she learns just how dangerous her new life is.
Even though Woods has written a number of series, which focus on the life of a single character, the characters from each of the novels do crossover into other series. For example, Stone Barrington appears in the second Holly Barker novel and he also appears in the second novel of the Rick Barron novels.
Rick Barron
The Rick Barron novels are only two books deep at the moment. Rick Barron was a police detective and he was demoted after a run in with a higher officer. He gets the job as security for Centurion Pictures but finds himself in the middle of a double murder case in the time period that is said to be the golden age of Hollywood cinema.
The first Rick Barron novel, The Prince of Beverly Hills, was meant to be a standalone novel but Woods ended up writing a sequel after he was bombarded with emails from fans asking him to write another. He has no plans to write another at this moment in time.
Further TV and Movies
After Chiefs was made into a TV series, one of his other books was adapted for TV as well. Grass Roots was made into a TV series in 1993. Since then, no other books have been made for TV.
Woods indicates that he would love it for his other books to be made into movies and if a director has read one of the books and wants to buy the rights, then he encourages the writer to get in touch with his agent.
Some other books have been bought to be made into TV, but nothing ever came of it. Chiefs is available on Netflix now and has a cult following, however Woods has no plans to make more novels based on the characters in the books.
Personal Life
In his personal life, Woods loves to fly, having his own planes and he still sails regularly on his own private yacht. He had married before but it ended in divorce and little is known about this marriage. He has stated that he preferred to live the life of a bachelor, but in 2013 he fell in love and married Jeanmarie Cooper. They have three homes, which they travel between, with their dog Fred.

I am in love with the voice of Tony Roberts, who reads the Stone Barrington series. I don’t drink but had to try prosecco because of the mentions in the Stone Barrington books. I love the lifestyle descriptions. I know it is not to move the plot along, but to add background, but I love to listen to the things that the characters eat drink, etc. I am sorry to hear of Stuart’s passing, I will miss his writing.
I love that you tried prosecco based on that – that’s awesome 🙂
I have enjoyed all Stuart woods books and am sorry he has passed. Maybe his estate will license another author to ghost his style. If there is one criticism it would be his introduction of his political beliefs.
I love all his books. Thought I read them in all in order but find more to read. How is he still wrting if he passed in 2002.
Oops thanks it was a typo. He passed on July 27th, 2022.
Am in my late 80s & in poor health.
As a professional sailor & pilot, we share those experiences.
Reading his books everyday helps me get through my daily misery!
Thanks for being an amazing writer. You will be missed
Did they discontinue the most recent Stuart Woods books on CD? Do not see them available anywhere.
They’re still available on CD. I just got Black Dog and Distant Thunder. I’m bummed to learn of his passing.
I’m a truck driver. So finding a series like this was great! My first Stuart Woods book was Cold Paradise. It has taken almost 20 years, but I am close to “reading ” all his books
I’m a trucker too. I believe I have every CD audiobook that Mr. Woods has written. Takes up a whole cupboard in my basement at home. Haha
If you’ve never read Under the Lake – 1986, it’s a must read. Not like any book he’s ever written. I’ve read every book in order and now just starting his latest An Extravagant Life: autobiography Incorporating Blue Water, Green Skipper. Maybe Mr. Woods is shaking things up now.
I have library cards for two substantial libraries – both of which have extensive collection of Wood’s books. I check out the E-Books online and read one every couple of days. Somewhat predictable but it’s nice sitting down with “old friends” and involving myself in their pursuits..Teddy Fay is the favorite..
Love all the books. Just finished Jackpot. It is the best ever. Have a list since 2008 of over fifty books I have read of Stuart Woods. Missed the one on Herbie Fisher-need to find that!! Thank you for writting!
I also have 2 library cards and agree with everything you said. They are like family. I only read hard cover books.
I have read books by Stuart Woods over many years. Never in order. Recently more in order. I have tired of less warmth of characters and to much causal sex. Looking at other authors.
Stuart is obviously a very gifted writer, per The Edgar and other awards. But toward the end of his career, I think he was trying to write too many books per year, and they were becomming shorter and too much alike: Stone or one of his friends – usually female – is threatened, so they board Stone’s Gulfstream, fly to several of his homes, and with lots of help, eventually take down the bad guys.
But after reading his last autobiography, I have renewed respect for him. He did indeed lead ‘An Extravagant Life’.
Have read every Stuart Woods book and now I am in the
midst them a second time, but in order of being
written. Can’t wait til the next page. Mike B.
I enjoyed the Stone Barrington series, but getting bored with the series. Would like to see this series end. Will there be more books added to the Herbie Fisher series? Also enjoyed the Holly Barker series.
Just read your latest book last night in one sitting. i can never put your Stone Barrington books down. Hopefully we will get more Teddy Faye soon.
I’ve read ALL your books and would appreciate more with Teddy Fay and Holly Barker. Stone Barrington were good but I need more of the others.
Thanks for the entertainment, it’s very hard to put them down.
Have absolutely loved each & every Stuart Woods novel. Thank you so much for the wonderful fantasies from your books. Continually recommend them to other serious readers.
I am a huge fan of Stuart Woods and have read every single one of his novels. I love Stone Barrington and all of his characters but as of late, the series has gotten so predictable. Mix it up a little please, Mr. Woods.
I enjoy all the books involving Teddy Faye. The one where Teddy Faye is in Santa Fe New Mexico
The Stone Barrington series has been one of y guilty pleasures for years, but lately I’ve been disappointed. I don’t know how Mr. Woods pumps out four or five books a year these days, but he must have a lot of help and editorial support.
I suspect that he has staff pumping out chapter ideas that he edits and revises.
Currently reading Hush Hush and I barely recognize the Barrington character, who pals around with a hired killer, to whom he says, at one point, “Would you like to come along, because we may need to kill somebody.”
The plotting is a chaotic mess, the characters are paper thin and the pace throughout is frantic. It has none of the charm of his earlier books, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to get through it.
I love your books in audible my eyes are not as great as they uses to be.
I like all your books. Teddy Fay, Stone Barrington and Rick Barron books.
I have read the Barrington series by snathes–not in order–but am now trying to collect them and re=read them. As a lady said, at 80 you can reread them like new! (poor memory)
I have read every most book written by Mr Woods From Grass Roots to Hush-Hush. I really like the ones about Teddy Faye.I am about to start Double Jeopardy. Keep up the GOOD Work.
I have been collecting Stuart Woods books for the past 3 years in hard back only, reading the Stone Barrington novels first in order. I love all these books, I had to take a break when I had eye surgery but since I can read again, it has been non-stop. I love them. Since I can not afford to travel, I live through Stone’s.
I just finished jackpot,it wasn’t a good book.
Love Stuart Woods as an author but please do not do any more books like Jackpot; it was terrible.
Love Stone Barrington character, please keep writing.
I agree Dennis, love Stuart Woods but could not get through Jackpot. Please find another co-author. I have read all the book and have all of them twice. I never finished Jackpot.
I agree
I like it best with no coauthor
My favourites of Stuart Woods books are the Teddy Faye
series and Stone Barrington. I have all his books and
numbered by release date. Total- 58. Waiting for last two available in July!!
June
Love Stuart woods series
Have all the books by Stuart Woods except a few of the Will Lee series & have read & enjoyed them all.
I love all Mr. Woods books and have read most of them in order. I really liked the Ed Eagle series Would love to read more stories about Ed.
I have finally collected ALL of the Stuart Woods books up to 2020. I am 80 years young and have read the whole series several times. This being the advantage of having a poor memory I still enjoy them all. My particular favorite is both of the Holly Barker & the Teddy Fay series. I have a standing order of any new books by Woods and always looking forward to the next one. Thank you so much.
Stone Barrington is my favorite character; however, my Stuart Woods books are collectibles. I haven’t read them all yet, but am pretty far into them.
My 93 year old Mother loves the Stone Barrington series which we have been reading in the evenings, we are on Paris Match currently.
Stuart Woods books are available on audio cd. Very enjoyable! Especially Dino’s character. And Teddy Faye!
