This behavior was one thing Stone apparently did inherit. His outspoken behavior leads to his termination from the New York City Police Department after fourteen years on the force. Stone starts out in the series as broke and in debt. He would likely have been homeless had his great aunt not left him her Turtle Bay Townhouse that he has been every dime of his renovating.
Prior to his career on the force, Stone attended college and received his law degree from New York University, and when it seemed like Stone had reached the bottom of the barrel he was confronted by an old law school friend offering him an opportunity to work for the prestigious law firm, Woodman and Weld.
Although the position was better than filing for unemployment, Stone had to deal with all of the clients that the law firm did not want to be associated with. “Stone is humorous, classy, sarcastic, well educated, well dressed, handsome, rich, single and well heeled. It is a given that Stone will get into deep-trouble without asking for it.” (BookReporter 2011) Like his creator, Stone is also an experienced pilot and frequently references his aircraft throughout the series.
New York Dead
After witnessing television newscaster Sasha Nijinsky’s near death experience of falling 12 stories from her terrace, Stone Barrington becomes engulfed in her case, especially when Sasha disappears after her ambulance collides with a fire truck. When the NYPD quickly pins the supposed murder on her lesbian lover, Stone is not so easily convinced and takes the case farther.
Dirt
In the sequel of the Barrington series, Dirt, Stone finds himself investigating a case for Amanda Dart. A gossip columnist herself, Amanda has become the victim of an anonymous writer out to ruin her.
Dead in the Water
In this third addition to the Barrington series Stone is enjoying his much-needed time off in Saint Marks. However, his vacation is short-lived, when the seemingly innocent Allison Manning arrives onshore with her yacht containing one less husband than when she left. Convinced she is innocent, Stone is the only one that stands between Allison and Sir Winston Sutherland, the minister of justice in Saint Marks.
Swimming to Catalina
After Arrington leaves Stone broken hearted for the Hollywood star, Vance Calder, she goes missing and Calder asks Stone for help in finding her. Dealing with his ex’s fiancé is the least of his problems when he realizes he has absolutely no leads to go on. Stone must set his feelings aside and rely on his intuition to solve this missing person’s case.
Worst Fears Realized
Worst Fears Realized forces Stone to search his past for a killer, that he may have known once before, when people he is close to start dying. Stone’s problems escalade when Arrington, Stone’s ex, clashes with his current girlfriend, a Mafia princess. The only good news is he gets to work with his old partner Dino Bacchetti.

About the Author
Stuart Woods was born on January 9, 1938 in Manchester, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. Shortly after that he enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning his career in the advertising industry, and was stationed in New York.
Less than a decade later, Woods moved to London and spent three years there before moving to Ireland in 1973 where he began writing his first novel, Chiefs, which was published in 1981. During his time in Ireland, Woods also took up sailing, competing in races including the Mirror National Championships, the Observer Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race in the year 1976, and the Multihull Offshore Cruising and Racing Association Azores Race in the year 1975.
Along with sailing, Woods is also a licensed, instrument-rated private pilot and owns a Cessna Citations Mustang. Wood’s second novel was actually a guidebook which included over 150 establishments in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
It was titled A Romantics Guide to the Country Inns of Britain and Ireland and published in the year 1979. Although none of the Barrington novels received awards, Chiefs, was adapted into a miniseries that was nominated for three Emmy Awards and one Eddie Award.
The success of the miniseries actually sparked interest in the novel which led to Wood’s winning and Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America. He has also had 30 consecutive novels listed on the New York Times Best Seller list. In Addition to the Barrington series, Woods has also completed seven Will Lee novels, five Holly Barker novels, four Ed Eagle novels, two Rick Barron novels, eight standalone novels, and two nonfiction pieces.

I am on my second round reading the complete collection, and this time in order. Love this series
I enjoy all of Stuart woods books as I have 5 volumes of Holly Bakers-4 Ed Eagle-7 Chiefs-5 Teddy Fay-all of Will Lee-1 Herbie Fisher-all his stand alone-63 volumes of Stone Barrington.
Number 65 Near Miss is out and hopefuly number 65 Smoiders will come out in Augest 2024
I started reading Mr. Woods novels about 5 years ago, I continue reading the Stone Barrington novels, they are witty, fun, and captiving.
I enjoy them so much that I have collected about half of them in hard cover for my personal library, when I have the entire series I will enjoy reading them again in order.
With the passing of Mr. Woods will there still be a novel released after Distant Thunder? It was to be released 12/27/22. It was untitled.
I don’t believe it has been confirmed yet whether there will be more or not, but I have a feeling it may continue at least for a book or two.
Man, just saw that Stuart Woods passed away recently. Will miss the books. They were always fun easy reads.
I discovered your books while recovering from surgery. Once I found out it was a series, I immediately started requesting them in order from my local library. I pick up Black Dog tomorrow to finish up the currently available books in the series. We have missed “Worst Fears Realized” as the only copy available was checked out but never returned. I may have to buy it as it will always haunt me to not be able to say I’ve read the entire series. Great volumes, all.
I noticed that at least a character out of each book is from Delano, GA. I believe, if I remember correctly, that Will Lee is fro Delano. What if any is the significance of Delano, Georgia?
Stuart Woods was born and raised in Delano, Georgia and also has lived in New York, Southern California, Virginia, New England, and Key West (as I also have, which is why I enjoy his novels so much.) We both have also traveled in the Caribbean a lot.
No, Stuart was born in Manchester, GA. He uses Delano as a pseudonym for Manchester. He explains the connection in his biography “An Extravagant Life”. The bio is a very interesting read. Check it out!
when will the next Stone Barrington book be coming out?
Hi Thomas – the next novel is Black Dog currently scheduled for August 2nd.
when will a safe house be released
It’s scheduled for March 22nd, 2022.
I have been avid reader of the Stone Barrington stories for several years. My only regret is not finding them in the correct order. Going back and picking up the missing ones now that I have to read on-line. At age 91 I still enjoy reading. Thank you for sharing your talent/gift with us.
Have read every book up to Contraband. Actually some for the 2nd time. They are very easy to find in order.
From the moment I first picked up a novel by Stuart Woods, I knew it wasn’t going to be the last one. I was captivated from page one, then I discovered the Stone Barrington series and my days became consumed with literary brilliance. I am currently working on the eighth installment in this “masterpiece of mystery”. I highly recommend anyone who is reading this to pick up one of his books, you will not be disappointed and if you’re like me, you’ll want to start at the beginning.
I am 94 and started Stuart Woods books a few years ago. So far I have read every book he has written. Was so sadden to hear of his death.
His literary ability will be gravely missed. Rest in peace my friend.
