Steven Forrest is an American author as well as an astrologer and a lecturer.

Born on January 6, 1949 in Mount Vernon, New York, he has authored over close to a dozen astrological books. He is also a founder along with others of the school of Evolutionary Astrology. This is a form of psychological astrology that incorporates metaphysics.

Forrest has instructed students by way of apprenticeship programs since 1998 in places such as Italy, the U.S., Australia, and Switzerland. He has been an instructor at places such as The New York Open Center, the Marion Foundation, and the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies.

He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 and graduated with his B.A. in religion. He first started practicing astrology in 1976 on a professional basis. His first book The Inner Sky was written upon being requested by Bantam Books. It would be published the next year and received generally positive reviews, with Esquire magazine deeming it ‘truly outstanding’ and was even given the thumbs up by Sting (the musician).

Forrest has been a part of the Ethics Committee for the International Society for Astrological Research. He also served on Kepler College’s Advisory Council as the Chair. He won the Professional Astrologers Incorporated Award in 1985 for his Outstanding Contribution to the Art and Science of Astrology. He was also nominated for a United Astrology Congress Regulus Award in 1992, 1995, and 2008. He also would write monthly horoscopes in the mid-eighties for Elle Magazine.

He is a practitioner of evolutionary astrology, a term that was first used in his book The Inner Sky. The term was first coined by Raymond Merriman in Evolutionary Astrology, a 1977 limited edition book. The term was also made more popular through the utilization in Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the soul by Jeffrey Wolf Green. In fact, Green and Forrest together were given the nickname of The Pluto Brothers.

The concept of evolutionary astrology is described by the author as the ‘fusion’ of humanistic psychology with ancient metaphysics. He has also referred to it as ‘practical’ and ‘testable’. Robert Downey Jr. has said that he marvels ‘at the accuracy’ of the readings done by Steven.

Forrest takes his own position on the nature of free will and fate as contained within the astrology field. He has stated that he preaches the primacy of free will when it comes to ‘shaping our experience’ and states his own personal confidence that humans are capable of changing themselves as well as being capable of evolution. He says that none of us as people is limited to some type of nature ‘cast in stone’ by planet positions. Changing ourselves leads to us making different choices and creating different futures.

His approach and his work has been praised in various different outlets by different people. O, The Oprah Magazine, has praised the author for his work on free will and choice, saying that his approach stops the blame game ‘in its tracks’.

Forrest has gone on to write many more astrological books after The Inner Sky and The Changing Sky, including his works The Book of Pluto, The Night Speaks, and Yesterday’s Sky.

His writing has been translated into multiple languages, including Italian and Chinese. He has gone all over the world speaking at different locations and events and teaching others his own brand of evolutionary astrology, which is able to combine grounded humanistic psychology, free will, and ancient metaphysics.

He has a bustling private practice where Forrest works to maintain active astrological apprenticeship programs in places such as Switzerland, North Carolina, Australia, and California. He is also a founding member of the Ethics Committee for ISAR, the International Society for Astrological Research.

Dell Horoscope has called him a wise man, while the screenwriter for Thelma and Louise Callie Khouri has deemed him as having not only humor but ‘articulate observations of human nature’. Rob Brezsny, author of the Real Astrology column, has called Steven ‘the most brilliant astrologer alive’.

This includes transits, the positions of the planets located in the sky as compared to a birth chart. The cycle of the houses is talked about, as well as the tasks that are represented by each of them. The book also covers progressions, the art of synthesis, and more, including an appendix that contains lots of information regarding how you can look up various transits as well as calculating secondary progressions.
