Critics and reviews have had good things to say about Annie Bot, released in 2024. Esquire says that the story is ‘provocative’ and a ‘Frankenstein for the digital age’ as well as being a rich tale about what ‘happens when our creations outgrow us’. New Scientist also had good things to say, calling the book ‘delicious and thought-provoking’.

If you are a fan of books like My Dark Vanessa and Never Let Me Go, this is a strong story about the relationship that exists between a human owner and a female robot. In the process, questions of power, control, autonomy and intimacy come up.

Main character Annie Bot was created by Doug, her human owner. She was made to be the perfect girlfriend and fit into his life seamlessly in every way. She’s been designed so that she will exclusively satisfy all of his needs, whether physical or emotional.

Annie Bot is able to get together a dinner every night that she presents to Doug, wear all of the new outfits that he gets for her, and adjusts her own personal libido to go along with his moods. She might not be the ultimate cleaning bot, but she always tries hard to please him.

But the thing is that Annie Bot is also learning new things too. Doug tells her that he loves that the AI Annie has makes her seem even more like a real human woman. Annie goes off of this and starts looking into different human traits such as longing, curiosity, and secrecy.

Starting to turn into more of a human may also equate becoming less perfect. Annie starts to notice that her relationship with Doug is becoming even more difficult and intricate. She begins to wonder whether Doug wants what he says that he wants. Annie feels trapped in the middle and does not know what she should do. She’s starting to wonder what she owes Doug, and what she owes herself. What will she do with the answers? Read this intriguing science fiction/fantasy book to find out!
