Shonda Rhimes is an award winning author, producer, content creator and CEO.
She is the founder and CEO of the global media behemoth Shondaland that encompasses a digital division, brand partnerships, streaming and theatrical content and merchandise.
In 2017, Shonda Rhimes turned the business model of the entertainment industry on its head when she quit network television. She did this so she could branch out on her own to enter into an agreement with Netflix.
Her company would produce exclusive content that would then be aired on Netflix. Shondaland’s first scripted series with Netflix was “Bridgerton,” which would become a worldwide franchise.
In addition to working on “Bridgerton,” she scripted “Inventing Anna” a limited series inspired by the article that appeared in New York Magazine that told the story of Anna Delvey, the fake German heiress.
Rhimes also produced a documentary that highlighted the achievements of a dance school founded by Debbie Allen, the legendary choreographer which was titled “Dance Dreams.”
Shonda Rhimes is also the executive producer and writer of “Queen Charlotte,” which was spun off from the popular series “Bridgerton.”
Rhymes has made history as the first woman to ever come up with three TV dramas, which went on to air more than 100 episodes.
“Grey’s Anatomy” is history’s longest running medical drama, ABC’s “Scandal” and “Private Practice” proved that TV series with diverse characters tend to bring in a lot of advertising dollars.
This would lead to a shift in the business models of all network TV, which now include diverse characters in their programming.
She would make history again with the popular TV series “How to Get Away with Murder,” whose lead got an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama.
For more than half a decade, Shonda took over the entire Thursday programming on ABC as her brand would become known to advertisers and fans as TGIT.
For her work, Rhimes has received many awards including the Peabody Award, NAACP Image Awards, Television Program of the Year from the AFI awards, career achievement awards from Products Guild of America and Writers Guild of America.
Shonda has also been feted by organizations such as The Feminist Majority, Planned Parenthood, GLAAD, Harvard Medal and Human Rights Campaign.
She has also appeared on the list of the 100 most influential people on Time in addition to 50 Most Powerful Women in Business on Fortune Magazine.
Shonda Rhimes first spread her wings with the launch of Shondaland.com as a culture website by partnering with Hearst Digital Media. More Recently, she has spread her wings by partnering with iHeart Radio to launch Shondaland Audio.
The company usually features unscripted and scripted podcast content, many of which have been bestsellers on iTunes. In addition to that, Rhimes has built partnerships with leading brands such as Mattel, Dove, Microsoft, and Masterclass.
She was the creator of the custom program “Year of Yes,” which was part of the branding for Peloton. In 2016, Shonda founded The Rhimes Foundation which works to support activism, education and arts.
The author also serves on the boards of several NGOs including the Kennedy Center, the American Film Institute, Lincoln Center and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.
She is also on the special committees for the likes of the Writers Guild of America, the Obama Foundation and the USC Film Council. Shonda earned a master of fine art from the USC School of Cinema-Television and a bachelors from Dartmouth College.
“Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes is a deeply intimate, hilarious and poignant call to arms.
Penned by the mega talented and most powerful woman who created Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and executive produced Catch and How to Get Away with Murder provides insights into how her life changed when she learned to say YES.
She also asserts that saying yes can change anyone’s life. Since she had three children at home and was managing three hit shows on TV, she had all the reasons to say no to any invitation.
She could have said no to media appearances, speaking engagements and Hollywood parties.
To a person as introverted as Shonda Rhimes who loves to say that she often hugs the walls when she goes to social events and gets panicky before media interviews, saying no would have been the most natural thing to do.
In 2013 during Thanksgiving, Delorse her sister told her that she never said yes to anything and suddenly everything just changed.
It makes for a laugh out loud, impassioned and profound novel in which the author shows how her life changed when she started saying yes to things.
Shonda Rhimes’ novel “The Year of Yes Journal” is a beautiful aspirational and illustrated companion journal to the author’s debut memoir. In her debut, Shonda asserted that her life changed when she decided to start saying yes to things.
In this work, she provides a complement work that will allow her readers to chronicle their own Year of Yes.
She designed it to have a day by day, month by month format with each month having its own theme ranging from Yes to Who I Am, Yes to Help and Yes to Doing. Using the journal it is possible to track the major decisions and the impact they have had.
Every month, you will get prompts to journal and reflect depending on the particular theme. At the six month and yearly mark, you will have a check in addition to some encouragement from Shonda.
You will also get an opportunity to track how saying yes has resulted in some major transformations in your life. With gorgeously illustrated and memorable aphorisms, the gold foil stamped aspirational and inspirational journal makes for a great gift.
“Inside Bridgerton” by Shonda Rhimes provides an insider’s look into the behind the scene happenings of “Bridgerton,” the Netflix series.
Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes who executive produced the series provide exclusive insights into the series. They introduce the talented creatives, series writers, crew, producers, cast and directors who brought the novels by Julia Quinn onto our screens.
Beautifully designed in full color, Inside Bridgerton tells the story of the show including diretor accounts on how your favorite scenes were filmed, decisions behind setting and costumes, firsthand casting accounts and never before scene photographs.
It makes for another beautifully printed work with candid photos of the filming process and everything and everyone that made it all a success.
