“Sherlock and Lucy Mystery” is a Sherlock Holmes Pastiche by Charles Veley and Anna Elliott. Veley has always been fascinated by the Sherlock Holmes novels ever since he was a boy. In one year, he had read all the Conan Doyle novels to his at the time ten-year-old daughter during their evening storytelling sessions. Charles also loved the works of Gilbert & Sullivan and is the author of a musical in the G&S tradition titled “The Pirated of Finance” that was the winner of the New York Musical Theatre Festival Award in 2013.
Apart from “The Wilhelm Conspiracy” and “The Last Moriarty,” he wrote most of his other novels during the 1970s and the 1980s when he was working as a full-time author. Charles currently works for United Technologies Corporation, where he consults on the creation of value and sustainability in the development of real estate projects. Anna Elliot, his daughter was born and brought up in Wilton, Connecticut, and is the daughter of parents that both earned an English literature doctorate. As such, she lived in a house that had a ton of books. During her childhood, she loved reading historical fiction and read a lot of Celtic history in college, and devoured the Arthurian legends in her free time. Anna currently lives with her husband and children in Princeton, New Jersey.
As a lifelong connoisseur of the Sherlock Holmes novels, it is not surprising that his daughter who grew up listening to these stories at their evening sessions would grow up to become an author. Besides the Sherlock Holmes pastiches on which she has collaborated with her father, she is also the author of several other works. She had written “The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles,” the “Twilight of Avalon” trilogy, and made her name as an acclaimed historical novelist before working on “The Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery” series. By 2020, they had written more than eight novels, novellas, and short stories in the series.
Ever since Sherlock made his first appearance in “A Study in Scarlet” published in 1887, he has become one of the most iconic and beloved pop culture characters. His stories have spawned thousands of books, radio and stage plays, films, and television shows. The writing duo of Anna Elliot and Charles Veley bring these stories back to life by introducing a fresh yet faithful reincarnation of Sherlock in “The Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery” Series. Lucy James is a modern-minded and independent young woman that has the detective and intelligence skills of Sherlock her father. On the other hand, is Sherlock Holmes introduced to a daughter he never knew he had and now has to deal with the challenges of parenthood. Sherlock has an abiding and deep respect for his daughter Lucy, who adores him. She has always admired the man since she read about his adventures as written by Dr. Watson when she was a schoolgirl in the US. In the series, Sherlock and Lucy each work on a case from a different places, and then meet to brainstorm ideas and analyze the evidence to draw conclusions. Overall, Holmes usually acts as a cautious parent when dealing with Lucy though he never gets her to always do what he wants. They also keep saving each other’s life from time to time.
“The Last Moriarty” is the debut novel of the “Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery” series, opening with a young lovely American actress coming to Sherlock for some help. She is a member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Troupe and she says that she is in desperate need of help. Sherlock agrees to help even as he has promised to help the English Premier resolve a high-level murder case that could have implications for the country. The resolution of the case may be make or break for a meeting the cabinet will be having with JP Morgan and John D Rockefeller later in the week. Time is not on their side and Holmes needs to put all his deductive and physical powers to prevent economic and political chaos and save lives in Europe and North America. But even Holmes could not foresee that a daughter’s hopes, a mother’s sacrifice, and the real identity of Moriarty the last of his name will influence the final outcome. The writing is faithful to the source and is one of the very few pastiches that have the feel and sound of the original Conan Doyle novels.
“The Wilhelm Conspiracy” the second novel of the “Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery” series opens to the body of a prominent London banker found in a less reputable location of the city. Hours later, another body charred beyond recognition is recovered from a Dover beach. Sherlock Holmes believes that the two are connected and intends to investigate. The Secretary of War asks Sherlock o work on the case of a missing super weapon that has gone missing on the eve of a major war. He needs to prioritize it since there could be severe consequences for the nation that could last for eons if Holmes does not recover it. Holmes recently discovered daughter Lucy James is a super detective and insists on helping her father despite his objections. Along with Dr. Watson, the two head to Germany and uncover a conspiracy that puts their lives in danger. The novel includes appearances from the likes of Kaiser Wilhelm II, King Edward VII, and Nikola Tesla. It is an excellent mystery that has Sherlock one of the best detectives to ever live engaged in a race to save the British Empire.
“Remember, Remember” is the third novel in the series. At the opening of the novel, a young woman named Lucy James comes to on the steps of the British Museum with no memory. She has lost everything and does not even remember her name. All she does know is that someone is out to kill her and that she could be a killer herself. This coupled with a vague recollection of the name of a detective is all she has to use to reconstruct why she is running for her life, where she is from, and who she is. She has ruthless enemies who are willing to do anything including kill to get what they want. She is forging new alliances and navigating through difficult situations as she comes face to face with enemies whose nefarious schemes she needs to stop. The authors bring back a Sherlock Holmes with all the authenticity you can have and the introduction of Lucy James his illegitimate daughter adds to the innovative twist of events. The two find themselves investigating and deducing while trying to find the criminals that have perpetrated some of the worst crimes in their society.
