In her hideout, she overhears the men plotting to kill someone who goes by the name Alistair Honeybun.
After they left, she couldn’t let this go and rushes to research about the man and lucky for her, she finds out who the man was. She calls to inform him of the news she has heard and finds him home and sick, struggling with a bad cold, and is in no mood to listen to what he thinks is a prank call. Humpty Bumpkin
Humpty Bumpkin is the debut novel in the Country Cousin series. Joey lost her parents in a private aircraft crash one year ago and left her an estate and a business to run. The story opens up as Joey Fulle and her pitbull, Caphy are walking around when Caphy returns with a clump of fur in her mouth. She later finds a wood chipper’s body and reports to Sheriff Arno Willager.
The sheriff asks whether the wood chipper belonged to her and if she knew the dead person. She responds that the chipper didn’t belong to her and had never seen the deceased before.
The sheriff starts an investigation, and when he doesn’t get enough information, Joey calls her friend Felicity. Felicity happens to have a private investigator boyfriend, but he is not in town. She alternatively recommends Cal’s brother, Hal Amity, a private investigator and a former police officer.
Joey and Caphy immediately like Hal Amity. Things get more complex when special agent Richard Cox of the FBI starts harassing Joey because of a missing painting. He doesn’t buy the fact that Joey isn’t aware of what he’s talking about. And now she doesn’t understand why a dead body is found on her property.
What’s the identity of the corpse found in the chipper? Who might have killed him and why? How is the missing painting connected to the dead person? Does the painting have anything to do with the death of her parents?
Joey and Hal try to untangle this mystery before more deaths are reported. Later pieces come together and realize that there is more to the story than they thought. Sam Cheever does a superb job of creating a string of complex mysteries with real-life situations and well-fleshed characters.
