Roseanne A. Brown is a published author.

She also goes by the nickname of Rosie. She was born in Ghana in a place called Kumasi. She immigrated from this West African nation with her family when she was young, relocating to central Maryland as a kid.

The first thing that she loved when she was younger was writing. She knew from that early age that something that she wanted to do was harness writing’s power (in creative or any form) to try and connect her two different cultures that she both considered to be part of her identity.

Brown attended the University of Maryland. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in the field of journalism. She also was part of the Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House, a program of which she was a teaching assistant. She has had her work in journalism featured in many outlets, including Voice of America.

When it comes to publishing, she worked at Entangled Publishing as an editorial intern. She has also been mentored for the 2017 Pitch Wars. In the 2018 Pitch Wars, she served as a mentor.

The author resides just outside of the Washington D.C. area. When she has time available, she is usually going for a walk in the woods, coming up with memes, or contemplating Star Wars.

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is the first novel to come out from this author. It was published in 2020 and was a best seller with the New York Times. It is a young adult fantasy novel that is perfect for younger or teen readers but works for adults readers as well.

This book was heavily inspired by folklore from West Africa. In this story, a crown princess in the middle of grieving and a refugee discover that they may be starting to be attracted to the other, but they’re also on a path where they may end up killing the other.

Main character Malik is looking forward to the Solstasia festival. He sees it as an opportunity to get away from his home, which has been hit with war. He wants more than anything to get out of there with his sisters and for them to begin their new life. He has just the place that would be perfect for them to live, too. It is Ziran, a desert city that is known for its prosperity.

He may have big plans, but Malik may have to change everything once something unexpected happens. When a spirit that is all about vengeance kidnaps Nadia, his young sister, it’s not just random. It is an exacted payment, taken because they are entering the city. As a result, Malik decides to make a deal to get her back.

He agrees that he will kill the crown princess of the city, Karina, in exchange for Nadia being let go. It’s a horrible deal to make, but he is desperate to get his sister back and doesn’t have any ties to the princess yet. Little does he know that Karina also has her own plans.

When Karina’s mother was assassinated, the Sultana was dead, and the court seems on the verge of mutiny now. The Solstasia festival is also coming up, and she doesn’t know what to do. The princess is beside herself with grief, but that alone is not going to fix anything. She does have one idea that could help fix everything, however. But it’s a dangerous one, and comes with its own demands regarding cost.

Karina wants her mother to be resurrected. While it sounds absurd, it is technically possible. It can be done using the ancient magic, but it also requires a price to be carried out. That would be a king’s beating heart. Luckily, the princess is not without options. She knows that she can get one, but it involves a bit of deception.

Karina knows that if she can offer herself through marriage to the winner of the competition at Solstasia, she will have a king and a target all in one. Then she can use the sap that she’s married to carry out the ritual and bring her mother back to life, seemingly fixing all of her problems in one fell swoop. It’s almost too easy, but she’s going to need to carry it off flawlessly and see this plan all the way through if it’s going to work.

Malik is also determined to carry out his end of the deal and get his sister back from the malicious spirit for good. He decides that he’s going to enter this contest, and of course gets in by rigging the thing. Now the two of them are both engaging actively with their destinies, each trying to do as much as they can to try and achieve the results that they want.

It’s funny in a way how similar the two are. Each just wants more than anything to bring back someone they care about, and they’re willing to go to great lengths to do it. Not many would willingly kill just to achieve their aim. But Malik is determined to try and do whatever he can to make sure his sister is free. Likewise, the princess Karina just wants to get her mother back from the dead and have her take over her former duties once more.

The two don’t even know each other, let alone the goals and plans of the other. Yet they are both on their way, on course to the destination of destroying the other while neither one of them suspects the other could be their end. Upon meeting, they cannot deny the attraction that comes up between the two of them. It only makes everything all the more difficult.

But as they inch closer to the moment where they have to make a decision, with evil stirring in the depths, will they be able to stick to their plans? Or will meeting and feeling a certain way about their potential victim make them have a change of heart? Anything could happen in this exciting fantasy novel from author Roseanne A. Brown!
