Roger Zelazny was an American author of fiction. In 1937, Zelazny was born to Joseph and Josephine. His father was an immigrant of Polish descent and his mother was Irish-American. He was raised in Euclid, Ohio. Zelazny showed off some early writing potential and was the editor of the school paper in high school and was also part of the creative writing club.
Roger passed on June 14th, 1995.
In 1955, he started attending Western Reserve University. He graduated from there in 1959 along with a Bachelor’s degree in English. He graduated in 1962 from Columbia University with an M.A. in drama. He wrote a thesis for his M.A. that examined morality and humor conventions in The Revenger’s Tragedy. He worked in Cleveland, Ohio for the U.S. Social Security Administration before transferring to Baltimore, Maryland.
While working for the government, Zelazny was also writing in his spare time. He began writing short pieces, short books, novellas, and then feature-length fiction. He eventually left his job to focus on writing full-time and indeed writing became a way to generate income. He also belonged to the Baltimore Science Fiction Society during this time.
He was known for his short stories and his work with fiction, which frequently embraced science fiction themes, rogues becoming Gods, mythology, tricksters, and fantastical premises. He was engaged to Hedy West, a folk singer, for about a year before eventually moving on and getting married in 1964 to Sharon Steberl. They did not have children together and ended up getting divorced. He then got married to Judith Alene Callahan in 1966.
He and Judy had two sons together and a daughter, Devin, Trent, and Shannon. When Roger passed away in 1995 due to kidney failure (caused by colorectal cancer), he had separated from Judy and he was currently in a relationship with and living with Jane Lindskold, another author. He says that he was raised Catholic by his parents but is not Catholic or did not belong to any organized religion.
He was the author of the Francis Sandow series published in 1969 and 1973. Zelazny is also the author of a well-known series called the Amber series, which is a fantasy series that focuses on the ruling family in a Platonic realm that exists in the metaphysical heart of all things. They can slide through reality but with wars against each other and the house of Chaos, the house is caught up in endless trouble.
Zelazny has influenced such writers as Neil Gaiman and the author of Game of Thrones. He has been nominated for the Nebula award fourteen times and has won it three times. He has been nominated for the Hugo Award fourteen times and won it six. Zelazny’s papers can be found at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County at the Albin O. Khun Library.
He was the author of the Amber series, which has ten books and was continued by John Gregory Betancourt. Zelazny is also the author of the Changeling Saga, which includes two books and was sold as an omnibus called Wizard World in 1989. He also wrote the two books that make up the Dilvish Stories. He is also a contributing author to the collection Berserker, writing in the Berserker Base sixth novel in 1985.
Zelazny also co-authored Millennial Contest with Robert Sheckley. There are three novels in the series. He has written countless stand-alone novels that include The Dream Master, This Immortal, Lord of Light, Damnation Alley, and many, many more. He notably co-authored the novel Deus Irae, published in 1976, with fellow sci-fi author Philip K. Dick.
Zelazny co-authored Coils in 1982 with Fred Saberhagen and worked with Saberhagen again on the novel The Black Throne in 1990. He also co-authored two novels consecutively with other authors that include Lindskold, Gerald Hausman and Alfred Bester. He has multiple omnibus releases out and multiple collections, starting with Four for Tomorrow in 1965 and going all the way to Fantasy for Good.
Roger Zelazny has contributed to the third book in the Nebula Award Stories series, published in 1967. He has edited several anthologies and is the author of the nonfiction book that focuses on himself, written also with the help of Neil Randall that was published in 1988. His stories have been featured in a multitude of anthologies. He has written a lot of short stories and been nominated for quite a few awards.
The first book in the Amber series was published in 1970 and is called ‘Nine Princes in Amber’. When main character Corwin wakes up in a hospital on Earth, he is shocked to find out that he cannot recall who he is. He cannot even remember where it is that he came from. When he finds out his destiny, he is shocked. Amber runs in his blood.
Corwin is told that he is a son of Oberon, who is the King of Amber, he also discovers that he is a successor to the crown. Where is the crown located? A parallel world called Amber. It is the only real world while all the rest are shadows. The prince has been exiled to Shadow Earth for hundreds of years, and now he is about to go home. But he might find that the princes of Amber also want the crown. Beyond that, structures block the way and more horrors stand in between them and the crown. Who will win? Read this book to find out.
The Guns of Avalon is the sequel to the first and it was published in 1972. Corwin is the heir to the throne, but when he goes into the world of Shadow to get ammunition, he finds more than he bargained for. His goal is to have vengeance on his brother Eric, but will the darkness growing inside him be too distracting? And when he encounters a mysterious, beautiful woman, will he be able to fulfill his mission?
Corwin is dealing with dark forces and evil that might just take down Amber and everyone who runs it. Can Corwin overcome his obstacles to rule, or will the kingdom fall just as it comes into his reach? Pick up this book and see for yourself!
