Robin Jones Gunn is a young adult, Christian and contemporary fiction author best known for the “Christy Miller” series that have developed something of a cult following. Her bestselling novels have sold millions of copies all over the world and won a number of awards. She has been the winner of the Gold Medallion Award and three Christy Awards. When she was in the first grade, her teacher said that she did not grasps basic mathematical concepts though she could keep all the class entertained with her story telling. Several years later, her husband noticed that she still had a flair for storytelling. He encouraged her to take classes and attend writer conferences. It was from these that she began reading published children’s books, interviews with authors, articles and devotions. Gunn’s career took a turn when she took a camping trip with her church youth group. She got very concerned when she learned what the teens were reading. The 13 year olds said that if she wanted them to read better books perhaps she should write them. She accepted the challenge and set out to write some young adult novels that would be good for Christian teenagers.

For more than two years, Robin Jones Gunn started waking up at 3am for half the week. Every week she would read some of the chapters she had written to the teenage girls and they sent her back with more ideas. After nearly a dozen rejections, “Summer Promise” her debut novel that would spawn the “Christy Miller” series was published in 1988. She would go on to become a prolific author and soon after, she published several other series that would become just as popular as her debut. She has asserted that there have been dozens of readers that have contacted her with praise about her work and how their lives were changed by reading the novels. In addition to her fiction novels, she has also written several nonfiction works including “Spoken For” that she collaborate don with Alyssa Bethke, “Praying for Your Future Husband,” which she wrote with Tricia Goyer and her chronicles as an author in the novel “Victim of Grace.”

Robin Jones Gunn’s novels have won many awards but the crowning moment was when some were turned into Hallmark Movies. She won two Readers’ Choice awards for her two Father Christmas novels and it would be these two novels that would be made into Christmas movies by the Mystery Channel and Hallmark Movies. The movies that resulted from the adaptations broke records when they were aired on Hallmark as they became the highest rated movies for the three consecutive years they were on air. Robin now has more than five million copies of her works in print across the globe. Since she has always been a love for traveling, she now has the opportunity to do this. She usually travels the globe to speak about God’s love and how it has changed her life. She had spoken at events in Europe, the US, Africa, Canada and South America. She currently makes her home in Hawaii, where she lives with her husband and children.

“Summer Promise” by Robin Jones Gunn introduces Christy a 14 year old girl. She had promised her parents that she would never do anything that she could regret later. But she is now heading to California to stay with her uncle and aunt for a while. She soon learns that even getting everything you want is not the recipe for happiness as her aunt tries to make her more fashionable. She meets Alyssa and wants to like her even though she could never imagine how hard Alyssa has had it. When she meets Todd Spencer surfing on the beach, she finally gets the invite into some cool groups as his friend. But his friends are Christians while she is not. She usually thought she was a Christian but since she has yet to put her trust in Jesus as her savior they tell her that she just may not be. Spencer helps her to understand Christianity and how she can be a better Christian. From the tragedy, prayers, and help of friends and bad influences, she finally makes a life changing decision even though this is not something that she may come to regret.

Robin Jones Gunn’s “A Whisper and a Wish” continues to follow Christy who moved to California. It was a convenient move as she thought she could finally get what she had wanted for so long – freedom. She gets to hang out with some new friends she had made at the beach and also gets into a relationship with Todd Spencer. But then everything goes to the dogs when she has to move to a new school and live in Escondido. She has to start all over again and knows nobody in her new school. She has to work very hard not to be influenced by the other teenagers in her new school. Her new friends are often doing things that she is not comfortable with but she stays strong on her values and who she is. While it is hard to do, Christy’s parents manage to keep her from dating for a year at least.

“Yours Forever” by Robin Jones Gunn sees Christy Miller spending the holidays with her grandparents. When she first arrived, she was subjected to a lot of teasing as she looked very unfashionable. But then her aunt had spent a ton of money on her new look and this had gradually got her accepted by the local community. But while she is enjoying her stay in California, her parents call out of the blue asking her to go back home. In this novel Aunt Marti is fleshed out and given a depth of character aside from being the rich snob of previous novels. The novel also provides insights into Christy boyfriend’s life which explains why he is so much like her. There is a lot of real life drama that Christy has to deal with. Most teenage girls have been in similar situations when it comes to dating.

   Dear Robin Jones Gunn or anyone who wants to read more about Leah (and Dinah, another daughter, and Jacob –Bible) from the Woodlands book of the Glenbrooke series, make sure to read The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. It’s a delightful and memorable story.

   I have read “love finds you in sunset beach” and I just got “a Kiss at sunset beach” and they appear to be the exact same book. Is there a difference??? One says it was published in 2011 and the second in 2018. I’m very disappointed as I bought the second one thinking it was the next book.

     Hi Lauren – Yes it looks like the author republished the book under a different title for some reason. If you are able to return one of the books I would do so.
