Largely focused on romance novels, the American author Allison Leigh is highly regarded for her contemporary take on the genre. With a clear eye for dialogue and how people interact with one another, she has been able to create stories and characters that resonate with readers worldwide. Whilst the ideas and themes may be common to the genre, she gives it all enough of her own personality to make her work stand out from the crowd. One such series is that of the ‘Double-C Ranch’ series of romance novels that has been running for quite some time now. Taking place in the state of Wyoming in America, it really captures the feel for rural life there, with all the highs and lows of romance on the ranch. Spinning off from the overall ‘Double-C Ranch’ franchise as well, it comes with a wealth of backstory, something which the more ardent followers of Leigh will appreciate.
The series has run for over sixteen novels so far and counting, as it is expected to continue for some time yet. With a variety of omnibus editions containing the collected works and selected titles, these are easy to pick up and read at any time. There’s plenty of room to expand upon the series too, with a lot more titles planned on the horizon for the Double-C Ranch.
Just Friends?
Brought out in 2007 on the 1st of February, this was to be the first in the ‘Return to the Double-C Ranch’ series. Now ongoing, this was the title that set it all up, although it did come as spin-off in the overall ‘Double-C Ranch’ franchise of novels. Released through the ‘Silhouette Books’ publishing label, this managed to established this new line of novels in a resounding fashion.
With the series being a continuation of the ‘Double-C Ranch’ franchise, this provides more of the same, but from a different slant. Already establishing the world and the premise of the series, this allows readers to step back into the lives of the characters, many of them also returning. Looking at one relationship, though, it manages to deliver a self-contained story, allowing any newcomers to easily pick it up to read too. The characters are also well drawn as well, with them being more than just two-dimensional vehicles for the love story. Readers really feel for them and where their relationship goes on the farm, as Evan Taggart and Leandra find love with one another. Developing over the course of the story, they both grow as people too, something which definitely evolves with them and their relationship. Setting its action in Wyoming as well, it definitely provides the ideal backdrop to much of the action taking place. Really getting a feel for the state, Leigh brings the rural life into full color, as it leaps up from the page with a sense of vibrancy. Becoming a character in of itself almost, it manages to create a style that is unlike any other, as Leigh really seems to provide a vivid portrait of it.
The star of a reality show, Evan Taggart seems to be the perfect bachelor in that he’s seen as both charming and handsome. In reality he’s infuriating, or so it feels to his producer Leandra with all of his demands, especially when faced with a horde of single women descending upon the ranch looking for his hand in marriage. Demanding that she pose as his fiancee, Evan asks Leandra to help fend of the women, something which soon sees fraught with peril, as she begins to see him in a somewhat different light. Will they become an item? Can they keep the show going? Is there room in their relationship to be more than just friends?
Sarah and The Sheriff
Initially released in 2007 just a few months after the first, this was the second title in the ongoing ‘Return to Double-C Ranch’ series. Providing another stand-alone romance in the community, this introduces a new set of characters as its main leading protagonists. Brought out through the ‘Silhouette Books’ publishing label once again too, this follows on in much the same vein as the original, with some surprises of its own too.
Carrying on from the previous book, this now provides another story set in the world of the Double-C Ranch. Whilst many of the elements are familiar to regular readers, it allows both fans and newcomers alike to enjoy the material. Providing another stand-alone narrative, it offers many of the themes and ideas that readers have come to appreciate the franchise for. Whilst some of the characters may have been featured briefly in the novels before, if only in name, this is ultimately the first time they get their own story. The family name of Clay is a prominent one within the ranch, and recurs continually over the course of the series. In regards to the male love interest, he is somewhat of a newcomer to the series, although he is well known within the community itself. As for the state of Wyoming, that is also featured heavily once again, as it provides the ideal backdrop to this love story.
Returning home is one Max Scalise, the hero of the ranch and the town, which is great news to everyone except Sarah Clay. Getting rejected by him seven years ago she is still feeling somewhat sore from it all, and his arrival threatens to unearth this once again. In love with her he hopes to win her back in his new capacity as a sheriff there, as he attempts to rectify the mistakes of his past. Will they ever get to be together? Can he share the secrets he’s holding onto? What will become of Sarah and the sheriff?
The Return to the Double-C Ranch Series
A quality example of its genre, Allison Leigh really knows how to keep her readership hooked, guessing throughout. With a genuine and sincere concern for the fate of the characters, she is able to make them and their plight seem real in a warm and relatable manner. With the legacy of this series set to continue into the foreseeable future, it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon either.
