Well, to keep it short, Rae Carson is a self professed nerd who happens to be a full-time adult novelist. She lives in Arizona with two of her pet kittens and writer hubby CC Finlay. Unlike Carson, Finlay is into Science Fictions.
Carson claims that she has been a storyteller right from the start. When the lady was just eight and tried catching up with a Nancy Drew novel in her school library and got late for her class in the process. She cooked a neat little story of how constipated she was and that it was the reason for her getting stuck in the loo.
And since she was always making up stories as child sometime to save herself sometimes to add on a little drama to life, it was but obvious for her to become a novelist. Even when she confided the same to her parents when she was in standard three, they thought that it was indeed a wonderful idea.
Her personal life
Carson, as a child moved around a lot. Thanks to her parent’s jobs. But all the moving around made her an adaptable girl. In her entire schooling career she attended 9 schools. She was also in her school cheerleader squad. And that perhaps changed her life. It thought her how to be confident and of course entertain others. It also taught her the tenets of being a team player.
Moving on to college meant a lot of improvement, introspection and all. It was here she learnt that when you work you work and when you party then you party like crazy. It was during her college days that she got her first boyfriend and even moved on from being a cheerleader to a being a football player.
It was during her college days that Carson graduated from being an un-athletic, clumsy woman to being a carefree woman. She graduated with a degree in social science and even went on to work as a bank teller, secretary and even tried her hands in substitute teaching. But she never kind of got the job satisfaction that she was craving for. No matter how many jobs she hopped and jumped they never managed to her anything more that huge remunerations.
Somewhere deep inside, she kept coming back to the idea of writing novels. So, one fine day in 2004, she quit her high paying job in order to discover her true calling. Realising the huge risk that she had taken Carson, immediately got herself enrolled for an online writing workshop that specialised in training their students to write in the genre of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. Since had put so much on stake that this she gave more than hundred percent to writing. It was during her training days that she met Finlay. Back then she hadn’t even anticipated that Finlay would be her better half some years down the line.
In the next few years, the duo got really cozy and graduated from being virtual friends to real friend. What followed organically were real dates and then came the final decision of the two getting married. Post marriage Carson moved on to Ohio where she penned her first novel Greenwillow for Harper Collins. Having experience an awkward adolescence, Carson prefers to write about the love, pain and other issues of being a young adult. Her forte lies in adventure fantasy. In fact she is regarded a top writer in this genre in the United States.
Her work
She is a fantasy writer and has two trilogy – Fire and Thorn Trilogy and The Gold Seer Trilogy to her credit. She happens to be a 2012 Ohioana award winner. Her novel The Girl of Fire and Thorns even made it to the New York Times 2013 list of bestsellers in the children/young adult category.
The Fire and Thorns Trilogy was Carson’s debut series, which is about a girl called Elisa, who is overshadowed by the accomplishments of her elder sister. However, Elisa has no idea that she has tremendous potentials that she isn’t aware of and happens to be the chosen one for fulfilling certain legacies. When King comes seeking a help, a ferocious battle takes place leaving Elisa to discover her own power. The adventure of Elisa, from being nobody to becoming the heroine of the trilogy is a journey that maps heroism and more.
The girl of fire and thorns is the first novel of the Fire and Thorns trilogy, the other two of the series being The Crowns of Ember and The Bitter Kingdom. The first novel of the series is basically about how Princess Elisa, a good for nothing princess, who is born as the chosen one as she has a blue gem in her navel discovers her powers, assembles her own army and fights against the villainous animagi and in the process discovers her own powers to ready herself to take on the task that God has assigned for her – deliver the people of her kingdom and to be the queen of Joya.
The Crowns of Ember is the second book of this trilogy starts from when where the first ends – Elisa has won the battle but no one has actually taught her the tricks of recovering from the battle or how to rule a kingdom where people are yet to trust her. In this novel she is seen fighting it all – attempt of being assassinated to having to face enemies both in and outside her court. To conquer her fear and powers, Elisa needs to follow the forbidden hidden clues that will take her to a roller coaster journey with the one-eyed spy, her nemesis. But yet she finds herself falling in love with him.
The Bitter Kingdom is the third and final offering Carson in this series. In this novel Elisa, the 17-year-old queen of Joya embarks on a journey that leads her to her enemy’s territory in a bid to win back her true love. This final edition of the novel has it all – sizzling romance, drama, sorcery and a happy ending.
