Mystery at Glennon Hall
This is the first novel in Glennon Normal School Historical Mystery set in Pennsylvania in early 1918. The protagonist is a feisty woman recently released from the navy for unknown reasons. The setting is well constructed with the right amount of description to bring the reader a good imagination. Characters are lively and easily relatable, with some of them creating interest and curiosity.
When she heard a call made for women to assist during the war, Delia was among the first to sign a four-year contract. This loophole allowed some women to join the service and relieved men of clerical duties that denied them from going to the fight.
Women were offered equal pay and status for similar work, and thousand ran to fill the available gaps. To differentiate them from other yeomen, they were identified using the ‘F’ Designation. Having spent many years looking after her parents and later losing them, she saw joining the service in 1917 as a great and exciting opportunity. She enjoyed the opportunity the time she was selected as the scribe to a high-class officer.
Her life became admirable, and her wife gave her the chance to grow, have new experiences, and learn new skills until everything changed in 1918 after an incident that led to the end of her military job. She couldn’t believe her exciting and fulfilling career was over.
It’s now September 1918, when the world is still at war, and Delia Markham, a resigned U.S Naval Reserve yeoman, is set for her typewriting teaching job at Glennon Normal School. Her work at the school is to teach future teachers. The transition isn’t easy for her, and circumstances and the only remaining family connection brought her to the town when all other doors shut for her. She’s happy to have the new job and a new home with her cousin Hazel, the head of the school. Life at the school isn’t much exciting as her duration in the service. School mystery at Glennon Hall is followed by a murder which draws Delia to both.
There are lots of secrets and intrigue in the story. Delia is a lovable, independent, argumentative, and strong character. The story is well written with real dialogue during a critical time in history. Mystery at Glennon Hall is an entertaining adventure that sets the scene and cast for other stories.
Tempest in Teaberry
It’s the debut novel in Teaberry Farm Bed & Breakfast Cozy series.
Megan Bennet and her husband Josh purchased Teaberry farm and are remodeling back to 1870’S vintage farmhouse with modern services for bed and breakfast. When Josh dies in a car accident, Megan is left as a young widow to run the bed and breakfast and a small farm in Western Pennsylvania near Teaberry town. She runs it so well on her own, and it seems to be performing well.
Megan has three close friends, Caitlyn, Erica, and Lauren, and her cat Emma. She is expecting four couples coming far from town who are traveling to attend a wedding. They stay on the farm as they wait for a friend’s wedding, and some get along while others find it hard. There is jealousy, anger, cheating husbands and wives, and physical and mental abuse.
The wedding ends in reception, and things take a different turn, and Megan gets involved since all this happens on her property. When one of the guests is killed at the reception, his wife is blamed for the crime. Did the wife kill her husband? Megan doesn’t believe that the police got the whole story right and begins interrogating other people who witnessed the incident and comes up with a list of suspects.
Will she find out what happened? With help from her friend, Megan Untangles clues that play a vital role in solving the mystery. The characters are down to earth, and you’ll feel like you know them in real life. The author also incorporates a gentle romantic angle into the story to make it more enjoyable.
The author shows how a widow tries to survive as she runs a busy bed and breakfast. For those looking for a quick and easy read, this is the perfect book for you. There is no complexity, tension, or high emotion, making the story believably good mystery. Character development is also done excellently.
This cozy mystery presents a fantastic read with a female protagonist and friends set in a small town.
Mark of Deception
This is the second installment in the Glennon Normal School series. The book takes off where the previous one ended, where Delia Markham is still getting used to her new job of typewriting. She hasn’t found the transition simple after her earlier job as Yeoman in the U.S Naval Reserve.
When a mysterious death affects the life of one of her students, Delia applies the numerous skills she learned at service to help out. As she tears apart layers of deceit, she finds out there is more than one suspect, and some hints may lead her to the Glennon house and the family from which the school and town are named.
During the same time, she’s teaching more on her new boss, a man who is said to have left the war under dubious circumstances. Wesley Glennon, assisted by his manservant, Otis, is still looking for the man that shot them, and without a culprit, they’ll have no means of proving their side of the story. Time seems to be moving fast, and anytime his secret may come out, bringing unnecessary pain to the people he loves.
The plot is believable and engaging for any reader, and the story is well written. The book gives the reader a chance to learn about this war and how people were affected. Women’s involvement in the war was so refreshing. The historical information concerning World War I is well presented and accurate.
