Paul Stewart is a bestselling English author of children’s books, science fiction, fantasy, and young adult novels. He is particularly famous for writing The Edge Chronicles series in collaboration with the renowned illustrator named Chris Ridell. Stewart is also famous for writing the Far Flung Adventures series, the Football Mad series, the Blobheads series, the Muddle Earth series, the Barnaby Grimes series, the Scavenger series, and the Free Lance books. He resides in Brighton along with his beloved wife and kids. Author Stewart was born in 1955 in London, England. He was first brought up in Muswell Hill, North London and then in Morden, South London. Stewart completed his schooling from a school located in Morden. His most favorite subject was English and the least favorite was Mathematics. After finishing his school studies, he indulged himself in traveling and spent the first few months living in Greece. During the time he stayed in Greece, Stewart undertook several jobs, including whitewashing hotels and picking grapes and oranges.
Between 1974 and 1977, Stewart studied at Lancaster University and obtained a degree in English, Creative Writing, and Religious Education. Following his graduation, he undertook traveling again until he enrolled himself at East Anglia University in 1978 for a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing. His classmates during this degree were reputed authors Malcolm Bradbury and Angela Carter. In 1979, Stewart visited Heidelberg, Germany to work as a teacher of English. He joined the Heidelberg University in the same year to study German and lived in the country for 3 years. Stewart went to Sri Lanka in 1982 for teaching English as a second language and returned to the UK in the next year. In the later years, Stewart continued with his teaching profession and went on to establish himself as a full-time writer. The debut novel published by author Stewart was the 1988 book called The Thought Domain. It was followed by numerous other young adult and children’s novels, mainly in the horror, science fiction/fantasy, and thriller genres.
The only adult book penned by Stewart to date is the 1991 novel called Trek. His favorite books when he was a child were Norton Juster’s The Phantom, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and the books penned by Alan Garner. He read a lot of SF works while growing up. Stewart claims to have started writing at a very young age. When he seven years old, he has started a series based on a snail. He developed a few of his earlier ideas later in his life and came up with his first book. Stewart collaborated with Chris Riddell on numerous projects. The two met each other for the first time in 1993 as their children were studying in the same school. At that time, Chris Riddell was in need of someone to write texts based on some of his illustrations, while Stewart was also in search of an illustrator.
After working on a few books, they finally came together to develop their most successful work, the novels of Edge Chronicles. They have developed this series in the form of four different trilogies and have clubbed them together in the form a series, released between 1998 and 2019. However, all 12 books can also be read as standalone adventures. This gives the readers the liberty to read this series in any order. This internationally bestselling fantasy series has featured on the bestseller lists of the NY Times and in the UK. It has sold over three million printed copies all over the world. Currently, Stewart is working on the 13th title and is expected to publish it soon. Besides this series, Chris and Stewart have collaborated in writing several more book series as well.
The debut book of the Edge Chronicles series written by author Paul Stewart is entitled ‘The Curse of the Gloamglozer’. It was first released in 2001 and re-released by the David Fickling publication in 2005. The book is also a part of The Quint Trilogy series. Stewart has mentioned the central characters in this book in the form of Quint Verginix, Wind Jackal, and others. The setting takes place in a fictional city called Sanctaphrax. Initially, it is depicted that Quint Verginix is the 14-year-old, only living son of a popular sky pirate named Wind Jackal. The father and son pair journey to the Sanctaphrax city, which is located on a floating rock bound by a chain to the ground. Its inhabitants have their heads touching the clouds. Unknown to Quint Verginix and Wind Jackal, the city hides a deadly secret deep in its great floating rock. While his father is away, Quint decides to take it upon himself to save the city from the dangerous secret after it is revealed to him. Later, Qunit Verginix’s father also joins him in the quest. Together, they try everything in their capacity to defeat the gloamglozer’s curse.
The second installment of the series is known as ‘The Winter Knights’. It was published in 2007 by the David Fickling publication, following its initial release in 2005. The book is also the second volume of the Quint trilogy. This novel opens by depicting that Quint Verginix joins the Knight’s Academy to undergo training as a squire. Following the completion of his training, he will obtain the ability to pilot the storm-chaser skyships into the Great Storm’s heart and retrieve stormphrax, a solidified form of lightning. Quint intends to use the stormphrax for weighing down the rock that holds the floating city of Sanctaphrax. A great difficulty arises due to the freezing winter that forces the city to come to a halt and also threatens its people to tear each other apart by bringing to light ancient feuds.
Quint is determined to do whatever it takes to stop the impending doom. But, he cannot do anything on his own alone. He is in desperate need of a group of loyal friends to avert the upcoming disaster. This book was enjoyed to a great extent by readers in all parts of the world. They enjoyed it thoroughly and were intrigued from start to end. The novel received many positive reviews from the readers as well as the fellow authors. Numerous well-known critics have also given rave reviews about this book and have praised the writing style of author Stewart that made the story look much more interesting to read.
