Early and Personal Life
Born in Tampa, Florida, on the 27th of April, 1944, Patricia Gaffney would grow up in Bethesda, Maryland, along with her brother Mike. Her parents were Jim and Joem Gaffney, and she would attend Walter Johnson High School, where she also later graduated. Following this, she would attend Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, studying English and Philosophy, receiving a bachelor’s degree in the subject.
Later she also attended the University of London, the Royal Holloway College, and George Washington University, where she studied English literature. She would attend the University at North Carolina at Chapel Hill, too, before going on to teach high-school English, followed by working as a court reporter freelance for five years. Living with her husband in rural Pennsylvania after they both moved there in 1986, she continues to live and write.
Writing Career
The first book that Patricia Gaffney would publish came out in 1989 through the Dorchester publishing label. It would be a stand-alone historical romance titled ‘Fortune’s Lady,’ making a definite mark on the literary public at large. That same year she would also publish ‘Sweet Treason,’ which was also a stand-alone historical, not being a part of any series.
Later in 1995, she would go on to publish the ‘Wyckerley Trilogy’ series of books, and these would also fall into the historical romance category. There would be a few omnibus editions of her single novels, too, with most of her books being comprised of stand-alone titles. Nominated for numerous different awards, she’s a critical success as well as commercial, with much more to follow in the future.
Forever and Ever
First published in 1996 on the 1st of April, this would initially come out as the third and final book in the ‘Wyckerley Trilogy.’ Finishing off the series, it provides the conclusion to the epic trilogy of historical romance novels, making for a satisfying finale. Following on in a similar style as her previous books, it’s best that they’re read in order so as to get more from the series.
The mines of Miss Sophie Deene are difficult and harsh, and it’s these that the ever-ambitious Connor Pendarvis must brave. Independent in her own right, Sophie Deene is a woman of convention, but, much to her surprise, she begins to fall for the handsome Connor. Being from a working background in mining, this goes against all convention, but soon she defies everything for love. Will she find happiness with him, can the two of them overcome social conventions, and what will happen when they find themselves together forever and ever?
As the conclusion to an already engaging and immersive series, this works so well on multiple different levels. The story itself is extremely well told, making it an excellent example of its genre while also paying close attention to historical detail. Creating a whole world with this series for her audience to explore it’s truly a testament to her success as an author, making for one of her most engrossing stories yet.
The Saving Graces
Originally brought out in 1999 on the 1st of January, this book would be a stand-alone contemporary romance novel. Not a part of any series, it would have a self-contained narrative that can easily be followed, making it a must for both fans of the author and of the genre as a whole. Aimed primarily at an adult audience, it was also brought out through the ‘Harper Perennial’ publishing label as well.
Four of the closest friends a woman could ever hope for, ‘The Saving Graces’ consists of Rudy, Emma, Lee, and Isabel. For over a decade, they’ve developed a deep bond and understanding, growing ever closer together, gaining a sense of honesty and understanding between them all. That’s when a crisis threatens to undermine their relationship, putting it to the ultimate test as they attempt to overcome it. Can they manage to get through it all though, where is their journey headed, and what will finally become of The Saving Graces?
A heartfelt and passionately told novel, this speaks to some deeper truths, with some engaging and realistic personalities at the center of it. The story itself is well handled, with a driving narrative that works on every level, making for a book that is definitely worth the time of the reader. With a range of emotions, it’s warm and witty, too, as it constantly surprises its audience with each and every single page turn.
