About Nora Roberts:
Nora Roberts is an Irish-American author of more than 200 romance, romantic thriller, and romantic science fiction novels, and one of the most respected and recognizable writers still working today. She has been lauded as being one of the most prolific authors of the late 20th century, and has has penned more than 80 bestsellers under various pseudonyms. Her books have explored the depth of human emotion, while still being paragons of storytelling and the art of drama.
Who is Nora Roberts?
Nora Roberts was born Eleanor Marie Robertson in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1950. She was raised Irish Catholic, and attended Catholic School until her sophomore year, when she transferred to Montgomery Blair Public High School, from which she graduated in 1968. Having no formal training as a writer, and no tertiary education, she also never wrote for pleasure throughout school, though she has described herself as being a wonderful storyteller, and inventing stories and fabrications, some of which are still believed by her mother today. Married for the first time in the summer of the same year, she settle in Keedysville, Maryland with her first husband, who worked at a family business. Still not writing, she spent most of her time caring for her two sons and doing crafts.
Early Prose
The impetus for writing came during a heavy snowstorm in the year 1979. Snowed in, she began to put ideas to paper, and these notes soon became a manuscript for what would become a later novel. She soon had six completed manuscripts that she submitted, without success to, Harlequin Publishing, being rejected multiple times. She found success with the newly formed Silhouette Publishing with her first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, being published in 1981.
Writing more than 20 novels for Silhouette, she was encouraged to begin writing under a pseudonym, J.D. Robb, to allow her new publisher, Putnam Publishing, to publish more of her work each year. Writing under the J.D. Robb handle, she began writing romantic suspense novels, the first being published in 1995. Also under the J.D. Robb pseudonym, she began work on her most influential wring, what would become known as the “ In Death ” series.
The first novel of the series details the working relationship of a futuristic detective and her husband in 2050’s New York City. Each set of books in the series are designed to be read ad trilogies, as is much of Nora Roberts’ work, enabling the author to fully flesh out the characters and themes of her works, as well as adding intricate and developed plot lines that are hallmarks of her style.
The ”In Death” Series
Being her most popular series to date, the “in Death” series is comprised of almost 50 novels, all published between 1995 and 2013. The series contains elements of romance, science fiction, thriller, and police procedural that meshes and blends together perfectly.
The first book in the series, Naked in Death, was published in 1995, and made the New York Times Bestseller List shortly thereafter. Naked in Death details a the murder of an influential, affluent prostitute and the character Det. Eve Dallas’ attempt to both solve the case and reconcile her feeling with the death of a young women whose death she could not prevent. The book draws heavily on science fiction motifs, while remaining strongly grounded in reality and veering away from fantastical settings.
The novel also details the relationship between Detective Dallas and enigmatic wealthy Irish businessman Roarke, who is the primary suspect. The book was released to such glowing critical and commercial praise that the second novel, Glory in Death, was published only a few months after the initial publication of the first novel. The sophomore effort for the “In Death” series, Glory in Death, revolves around the murder of a prominent attorney for the District Attorney’s Office.
It introduces many recurring characters, including Officer Delia Peabody, and further details the world of 2058 New York City. Glory in Death was received as a more complete and mature novel, fleshing out the future setting while retaining the elements of romance and suspense that made the previous novel successful.
Other Works
Besides the “In Death” series, Nora Roberts is know for her prolific and immense body of work, routinely writing and publishing an average of 15 novels per year. She is best know for publishing trilogies of romance thrillers, which, according to Nora Roberts herself, allows the work come together more completely, and enables a more fluid and accessible storyline.
Published almost exclusively in paperback from, most of her work in this genre is created this way to enable fans of the series minimum downtime between novels, allowing them to complete the story sooner. Nora Roberts’ work is regularly adapted into television and mad-for-television films for the Lifetime cable network. She became the first author to ever have her work adapted consecutively by the network, and multiple works of hers, have been adapted since. Some of the most viewed programming has been the network’s adaptations of Montana Sky, Blue Smoke, and Carolina Moon.
Activities out side of Authorship
In 1997, the author that was the cause of her being turned down by Harlequin Publishing in 1980, Janet Dailey admitted to plagiarizing numerous passages form many of Nora Roberts’ works. After a lawsuit was settled in her favor, she donated the entire proceeds to the Literacy Volunteers of America Foundation.
This is not her only work with charity, however, as she is also a frequent contributor to numerous other charitable foundations, with the Giving Back Fund report regularly listing her as one of the most charitable donors. Her work has been honored by numerous awards, and she was the first writer honored with induction to the Romance Writer’s Hall of Fame.
She was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in 2007, and since 1999 every one of her published romances has been listed on the New York Times Bestseller list. She lives in Boonsboro, Maryland with her second husband, Bruce Wilder, and they jointly operate a bookstore called Turn the Page Books. An avid reader, she loves the Internet, using it for much of her research, and is terrified of flying.

I absolutely 💯 % love Nora’s books and audios as I do a lot of driving.. she keeps me on the road 💜💜 Thanku 😻
Have just finished Come Sundown – so enjoyable. Is there a sequel to this story?
Is there somewhere I could find a list of all the various “macgicks” series. I have finished Chronicles of the One & Cousins O’Dwyer and absolutely am in love with them! They are so much fun to read. Assume the Dragon Heart Legacy is along this line, but what others? Thank you!
Your books take me to unimaginable places. I think I may have missed a few but not many. My favorite are the J.D Robb series. I have read every one and look forward to the next. Thank you so much.
I can’t even explain how your stories enriched my life! Transporting me to new places and times have enriched my life and thus my family!
I love Nora Roberts books, have been collecting them for years. My favourite series is the MacGregors. She wrote about all Daniel MacGregor’s children and his grandchildren except one..What happened to Amelia, daughter of Serena and Justine Blade?
Just wondering why there are books missing from this list? I have 4 titles published by Silhouette; Wild at Heart, Irish Dreams, A Rotal Invitation, and Forever. Where can I find a list of the rest of the Silhouette published books?
Hi Rachel – they are omnibus books and we have the individual books listed so we don’t list those. Cheers
I have been reading Nora Roberts books since the early 80s. At one point my mom would read the book 1st then it went to my older brother, me and then my sister. We did this trend until my mother passed away 2 years ago. We ended up donating all the books mom had to the library in the long-term care home mom was in at the time of her death. I still read them and try to read at least 2 books a week.
Thank you for the wonderful stories. I never get enough of them and always excited when I come across a new title. This past Wednesday our clubhouse and library caught fire and all was lost. We had about 30-40 of your titles…. now nothing. I live in Bay Indies in Venice, Florida. I seem to read a book a day so will start trying to find new titles of yours. It must be wonderful to have so many stories in your mind
My favorite book/s by Nora Roberts is the Three Sisters Island trilogy…couldn’t put it down and have reread it more than once. I search out her books wherever I go, as well as JD Robb.
As an aspiring writer, I can only hope to write as well as Nora Roberts, someday.
I have been reading Nora Robert’s and her JD Robb books for years I try to read them in order I do the in death series it takes about 2 years then they get packed up and the Nora Robert books come in and ate put into the book case its harder to read them in order as she wrote them because she wrote them different time’s so I have them as my own series she’s the only author I seem to be able to read ! I hope she continues to write.
Hi, I have never read Nora Roberts and I am overwhelmed by the number of books she had written. As a newcomer to her writing where should I start reading. So many to choose from. Help?? Thanks!
Two of the highest rated books by her on our sister site Book Notification are standalones. Blue Smoke and Montana Sky.
And the most read book is Year One, the first in the Chronicles of The One series. Might be worth trying one of those 🙂
Just finished the Dragon Heart Legacy and must say it was fabulous! I, too, have been a Nora Roberts fan for years and can’t wait for new ones to come out. (Love JD Robb, also.) I wanted to say that I can’t believe how ideas come to Nora and then she is able to flesh out the stories in such complete detail that I know that I am in the story. I can see the stories completely in my mind. Please continue to write and I will continue to read.
I have read the Harlequin copy of The Calhouns: Catherine and Amanda, where can I find a copy of the Story of Lilah and the the discovery of the Saphires? Or is there a Story about Susanna?
Where do you live I have a spare copy of Lilah
Nightwork has replaced Undercurrents as my new alltime favorite but I think Desperation might sneak up on Faithless as my new ID favorite, we will see as I can’t wait to read Desperation ID. I preordered it. Wish There was early editions like Shelter and Come Sundown. Should do those more often! I start to have withdrawal symptoms between books I can’t get them fast enough!!! I love those books! All of them!!
Nora! Will you write some more books about the Quinn Brothers? I read all three once or twice already and I’m reading them again now.
There are 4 Quinn brothers books. The last one is Chesapeake Blue that is adult Seth’s story.
Nora, I’m just finishing, “Black Hills” Are there anymore with Dr. Lillian Chance and Coop?
Unfortunately, that one is a standalone and they don’t appear in any other novels at this time.
I just finished The Liar and was hoping there would be a story about Forest, the brother of Shelby.
I was wondering if there was a second book to Tonight and Always. It’s my favorite, and I hate how it leaves you wondering if Kasey actually does have one more child or two more.
Unfortunately not.
I have read all In Death Books, should be a TV series. The new Dragon Heart Legacy series is Great, When is the 3rd book coming, I cant wait
I’ve said this a million times over the years lol. I can only assume the author is opposed to the idea. At one time many years ago I’d have blamed it on the inherent cost of producing a futuristic television series that wouldn’t come off cheesy but now? Not so much.
I’m inclined to think it’s because she’s not willing to relinquish any creative control over the characters and storyline.
I like reading all books cause it so beautiful and romantic. The fiction books are more lovely and interesting just turning the page and get thrilled
I have been with Nora since she started writing. I started a collection of her books. When she started her In Death I couldn’t put it down till I finished them. I’m now 82 and enjoy reading on my kindle which has been a blessing. My daughter has upgraded my kindle three times so I don’t miss any books. Keep up the great work.
I can’t say that I have any other author that I would read regardless of the type of story! However, Nora’s Irish stories are my favorites, and I have read and re-read them over the years.
There is an instinctive feeling of familiarity every time I open my books! I’m 63 and started reading her books in my 30s. I thank Nora for helping me escape from life, for making me laugh, for making me cry..all of the things a great writer can do.
I love the “in Death” books. I have the library hold them for me when they arrive. I have read Nora’s books for years and enjoy them immensely and recommend them often. I don’t see the problem with calling a dog “Bollocks”. It could have been much worse.
Love all of her books J D Robb and Nora Roberts. Keep going.
i discovered Nora when i was just 22, i’m now 36, and i have since read everything i can get my hands on of hers. My favorites are absolutely the in death series. i would go to barnes and noble and order 5 or 6 at a time and then devour them and go back to order the next few. The trilogies that include a bit of magic and sci-fi are usually my favorite, but her regular romance novels are also to die for. I’m about to devour the latest in death book as we speak. No other author i read is able to bump out as many books as fast as Nora, and for a fast, eager reader like myself, that’s such an amazing thing. I will take a little time off, then come back and have 2 or 3 new Nora books to read. Also, i have a pet hen named Mavis, after one of my most favorite characters in her books.
Once I discovered Nora roberts,I have read every book. The stories are so capitaving and put you right into the story. It’s amazing all the detail. In these books, that you feel like you are right there
Just finished The Next Always can’t wait to get my hands on the next two in this trilogy….Love Nora Roberts books…She must write constantly, I’ll never catch up on all of her stories, but I’m going to keep trying❤
I have read all three of them !!! They are very good I just hate how it end in book three … wish it was more
I didn’t think the Becoming was out until November?
I’m British and wish that Breen’s dog was called anything BUT ‘Bollocks’ – which is considered a swear word or a name for testicles and something I only ever use if I remember that I’ve forgotten something. It’s something my (now grown-up) children would never have dared say in my hearing. I’m really broad minded but this name really bothers me. Am I missing the point as to why the dog’s called this. I am a Nora Roberts fan and have read most of her books but this really, really bothers me. M
I agree wholeheartedly! Bad name anywhere.
I don’t see anything wrong with it. The only thing I see wrong is that Nora Roberts doesn’t know all of the words/names in all of the languages around the world. Even a name like Max would offend someone somewhere.
I love the inn boonsboro books and the other trilogy’s. I love your work. I had just about all your books but had to downsize because the pandemic we had to move which was a nightmare. If I ever get my own house and dont have to move I will start collecting again. God bless you cant wait till your next books come out
It’s called Bollocks because irreverence runs through writing as an American characteristic for flouting decorum. There are examples everywhere, so I’m a bit stunned when it shows up in her British characters that weren’t born in a coal bin.
Made me laugh. I have always enjoyed “Eenglish humor” which is what I took this as!
I haven’t read a Nora Roberts work that I haven’t loved. Just can’t put them down. Hope to get through all of them before I die!!!!
I have read The Awakening an am about to begin The Becoming. I was swallowed op by the Awakening and am hoping that I can follow the saga to greater heights. If I have not found the follow on pieces of this group, I would be more than pleased to chase them down if you will give me the pathway.
By the way, in case you haven’t already discerned my motive, I dearly loved The Awakening and prologue and will devour what follows, if such there is to be found.
Thanks,
Cliff
Did Nora Roberts write a third book in Starlight series?
