Natural Laws Apocalypse (Series by Tom Larcombe)
Tom Larcombe writes the “Natural Laws Apocalypse” series of GameLit novels.
What do you do when the world as you knew it changes dramatically without too much notice? When the Natural Laws no longer apply in all cases and the single thing to explain is why is a “System” which seems to have access to everybody in the world?
“Enter System” is the first novel in the “Natural Laws Apocalypse” series and was released in 2021. Marc is home from college while on break, spending his time laughing about some of the crazy stories in the news he has found online, and playing video games. When this message appears in his line of sight, blocking out everything else entirely, he almost freaks out. The message warns that the world’s been in this variant Natural Laws beta test for millennia and that it will soon revert to the norms.
Deciding that even if he is insane, it is not going to hurt anything to just try and prepare, and settles in to do just that. Despite the atrocious lack of skill that the System has with the English language, he still manages to work his way through enough of the help files so that he can have some clue of what is coming. After sharing his finds with a few friends, they all begin preparing together.
Once the change starts, this small group races to create a Safe Zone, this area where the monsters won’t spawn and where they’re able to gather the survivors together in an effort to rescue as much of the town as they can. Along the way they learn this new System can award classes which resemble those of the games the group’s played, and magic for those capable of grasping any of it.
With monsters spawning throughout the town, everyday animals are being mutilated into some dangerous creatures, and this System that desperately needs English lessons, they will do their level best to save as many of the local residents as possible.
“System Return” is the second novel in the “Natural Laws Apocalypse” series and was released in 2021. After finding that the encampment just outside of his Safe Zone is filled with friendlies, Marc and his gang have a chance to finally try and grow stronger again. The addition of an administrator for the Safe Zone and somebody to coordinate its defenses allows Marc to finally feel as though he can go out and do other things.
With the number of survivors they are finding in the immediate area dwindling rapidly, they decide to go farther afield, working on gaining some additional resources for the Safe Zone as they seek out any remaining survivors that they can find.
His dad reported passing by some other Safe Zones while on his way back to town so Marc decides that some more investigating is in order. What he intends to do is to salvage the ruins of this destroyed Safe Zone that his dad saw and offer cordial relations and trade to the surviving one that is closer by.
But what actually happens isn’t what he’d intended or expected. With the possibility of a technology upgrade for his Safe Zone, what seems to be a community of some kind of elves just a few miles south of the Safe Zone, and the sneaking suspicion that this System itself is just a tool for somebody, or something else. Marc is not quite as free to do whatever he wants.
“Control System” is the third novel in the “Natural Laws Apocalypse” series and was released in 2021. Marc’s Safe Zone, along with his interconnected Safe Zones, has just been upgraded to an Industrial Technology level. With this new tech level comes a whole slew of items that they have desperately wanted to build. Now lighter than air travel, railways, primitive firearms, and so much more are available, once the requirements for their tech chains get satisfied.
With this quest that’ll take them more than 200 miles away, given to them by this System which appears to be seeking any way to throw off its programmed limitations, lighter than air travel seems to be the way to go. Attempting to get there on the ground appears like it’d be courting death and disaster.
Marc’s finally managed to get the daily running of the Safe Zone out of his own hands and into hands that he trusts. His mom’s fully into the administrative end of things and his dad, while being the head of the defenses, has just been granted build access on the pedestal so Marc’s more free to explore and grind for levels.
With the System attempting to bypass its restrictions, the elves are trying to build their own settlement in Marc’s Captured lands, and what appears to be a major quest that needs doing, Marc has been slowed, if not completely stalled, on the expansion of both his Safe Zone and the network of Safe Zones which allow for him to Capture land. But fortunately, the lighter than air chain offers up a slew of benefits, including the ability to search the surrounding areas or track down other survivors in their own Safe Zones.
“System Escape” is the fourth novel in the “Natural Laws Apocalypse” series and was released in 2022. Marc and his party have finished up their zeppelin and took it out to try finding other Safe Zones. Their intent is to set trade routes up between all the different Safe Zones to give them better odds of survival.
The second Safe Zone they find with the zeppelin’s almost as large as Any Port. It even has a ring of outlier Safe Zones, or a partial ring, anyway. Seems that numerous smaller Safe Zones have been converted into dungeons. With the safety of the bigger Safe Zone at stake, they bring the zeppelin down to help out the bigger Safe Zone anyway they need.
Upon returning to Any Port, Marc ramps up his expansion, his dad’s finally seen the wisdom of all the additional Safe Zones Marc wants to Capture more land.
Setting up more of their own outlier Safe Zones, meeting interesting and new creatures, some of whom would very much like to murder and eat the party, making contact with new Safe Zones, and working with the satellite they recovered, Marc’s keeping himself busy in the aftermath of the System’s arrival.
