Naomi Novik is an American writer born in 1973 in the New York City. She is famous for her book series, Temeraire, which consist of eight novels. Naomi’s interest in writing developed in her early ages having completed lord of the rings’ by the time she was six years old. Naomi Novik was brought up by her Longs Island by her father and mother. Her father was of Jewish background hence rendering her a second generation citizen.

Naomi’s education background is a solid one, having acquired Bachelors in English literature at the Brown University. She was also admitted to a master’s degree from the University of Colombia in Computer Science. After undertaking several projects in the computer science field, she decided to settle in writing since she preferred it to programming. This decision to settle in writing was a life changer since she has had a successful career ever since. She has won several awards including the Compton Crook Award in 2007 and the Hugo Award Nomination award also in 2007. She is married to Ardai and have one child. The couple lives in Manhattan.

Naomi Novik works are mainly based on fantasy and alternate history. Her series Temeraire is based on the Napoleonic war where she introduces dragons that act as foot soldiers. Temeraire book series leaves a lingering question on the reader’s minds who always wonder how the Napoleonic war would turn out if the countries involved dragons in the war. Vivid description is one of the major styles used Naomi to keep the readers actively involved through imagination.

Naomi’s use of dragons creates alternate history of the Napoleonic war and gives the reader a chance to learn about the war and also an opportunity for the reader to imagine what the outcome of the war would have been like if dragons were involved. It is a classic fantasy story that uses imagination and precise flow of thoughts to keep the reader entertained and indulged. The books in the series flow from the very first book that is the Majesty’s Dragon to the second last book that is the Blood of Tyrants. Every book leaves the reader lingering for more due the captivating nature of the series.

The writer uses two main characters in the Temeraire series. One of the characters is William Lawrence, a captain in the British battalion actively involved in the war. Temeraire is another main character in the book series. He is a dragon of a Chinese origin under Captain Lawrence’s command. The tale of how the two main characters eventually come to meet and this is described in vivid detail. The book series Temeraire is based on the adventures of the main characters as they strive to adapt and survive the war. They undergo both great and disturbing experience throughout their adventures. In their quest to serve their country they find themselves visiting several continents. The two characters, William and Temeraire, are portrayed as great companions and that the demise of one partner caused the other great misery. The duo’s friendship and loyalty to one another is tested throughout the series. but at the end of it all they stand strong and get through the war together.

The earliest books in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series were both written in 2007. They are His Majesty’s Dragon and Throne of Jade. His Majesty’s Dragon won the Compton Crook award in the same year of its premier. In her first book, Naomi Novik describes the tale of how Temeraire and Captain William Lawrence met. It explains how Lawrence while in an expedition with his crew, captured French ship. Inside the vessel was a UN hatched dragon egg that was almost hatching. To Captain William’s surprise the egg hatches while they are still in transit. According to British believes a dragon must have a trained handler by its side as it hatches to avoid it going Feral. It is for this reason that Captain William decides to harness the dragon, and they are bonded. Temeraire’s loyalty William is tested when the Aerial Corps tries to assign him to a new trainer. Temeraire holds his loyalty to William by refusing to be recruited by a new coach who serves as a reassurance to him. The duo has to learn fast on how to survive the war even as they are commissioned to their first battle together. Their first mission is a success after they prevent the Bonaparte from abducting the British Isles.

The second book of the series, Throne of Jade was also published in the year 2007. It describes how the Chinese try to recapture their long-lost dragon who is Temeraire. According to the Chinese tradition, a dragon like Temeraire was of loyal status and was Captain William, who was just an ordinary man, was not worthy of him. The Chinese make several failed attempts to recapture the Temeraire from the British. A consensus between the two countries is arrived at where the duo is to be given royal transportation to China. During their voyage, there are several attempts to eliminate William but he manages to dodge all the attempts. It is also during this voyage that Temeraire Contracts a respiratory disease that is cured later on while still in the ship. On arrival to China, Temeraire learns about his roots while William also tries to adapt by learning the Chinese language and also making useful alliances. The series is yet to be produced into a movie with Peter Jackson a Hollywood reporter alleged to have made inquiries on the rights to the series.

Naomi Novik is a phenomenal writer who can bring life and imagination into writing. She uses her power in writing to command the feelings of her writer through the themes and styles she uses throughout the series. Naomi Novik’s series are comprised of sensational art and hence if you are an art lover you should get copies of the books. She commands the English language, and she has the talent to support the brains making her one of the best writers of our time. She is an inspiration to other female writers who have dreams and hopes in writing.
