Since her first published novel hit bookstore shelves in 1987, Nancy Gideon has become best known for writing tales of romance, especially paranormal romance. A Michigan native, and 1999 HOLT Medallion recipient for Virginia Romance Writers, Gideon has published dozens of novels, Gideon has received much acclaim for her “Midnight” series, a paranormal romantic fantasy. Love, suspense, mystery, history, fantasy, thrillers, and a touch of science fiction, the versatile author’s works are as widely varied as the languages in which they have been published;including Romanian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Czech, German, and even Icelandic.
Born and raised in Portage, Michigan, Nancy Gideon began writing in the late 1980s, having her first novel published in 1987 and never looking back. A mother of two, her third book and second son ironically shared the exact same due date, setting in motion her life of squeezing chapters in between diaper changes, ball games, parent-teacher meetings. Of course, ever the truly diligent multi-tasker, both the book and her son were produced ahead of their deadline. Gideon wakes up at four A.M. every day to research, write a chapter and watch the sunrise over a nice, hot cup of coffee. A few hours later, she hits the daily grind, and it’s off to work at her eight-to-five day job as a legal administrative assistant for a local Michigan law firm, before finally coming home to spend the rest of the evening with her family. A hectic balancing act, for sure, but it demonstrates her true love and admiration for both her family and her craft.
Gideon enjoys working on a diverse array of projects, often times simultaneously. At one point in her career, writing at a staggering pace, she put forth seven novels in a single year! Nancy’s love of storytelling has been made abundantly clear throughout her illustrious career. Having learned her craft, as well as her discipline, through her background as a journalism major and communications minor, Gideon graduated with honors from Western Michigan University. As a national, public speaker, Gideon has been giving lectures on the topic of writing, with a specific slant toward romance, for several years. She proclaims that doing so gives her the opportunity to put her college degrees to some practical use.
Published between May of 1994 and May of 1995, Gideon’s award winning “Midnight” series of novels helped to put her on the map. Released nearly a decade before the start of the “Twilight” series, before the craze and cultural phenomenon that is the Young Adult movement, and perhaps written a bit of ahead of its time, Nancy Gideon’s “Midnight Kiss” kicked off her first series of novels and featured a romance between Louis, a male vampire, and Bella, a human female. Set in London, this first book follows Bella as she uncovers Louis’s true nature and identity and makes the shocking discovery that her father is trying to help him break his curse. Praised by readers for the realism in her writing, the series became popular enough to spawn the demand for a trilogy. While the second and third books in the series, respectively entitled “Midnight Kiss” and “Midnight Temptation,” followed new lead characters, the themes and settings remained the same, and allowed the vampire series to gain new traction and draw some fresh blood. Due in large part to the success of her original series, and possibly the revival of the genre with the popularity of books like “Twilight” rising, Gideon would continue the “Midnight” series years later and add several more books to her already impressive resume.
While best known for her work on the page, in both hardcover and paperback form, Nancy Gideon is no stranger to the screen. She has contributed to the writing of two different independent horror films, an uncredited dialogue punch up on the horror feature “In the Woods,” as well as writing the novelization of the film after its production. She has also an original screenplay called “Savage,” which was produced on a small budget in 2011 by first-time feature director Jordan Blum. “Savage” stars Martin Kove, made famous for his appearance as the rival dojo instructor in the original “Karate Kid.” The film is a creature feature set against the backdrop of a blazing fire ripping through Bear Valley National Park that is forcing the animals out of their natural habitat. As local firefighters work to contain the inferno they come face to face with a beast that should never have been discovered. Gideon even appears as an extra in the film “In the Woods,” showing up in one scene as a patron at a bar. The writer and director of “In the Woods,” Lynn Drink is also credited as a co-writer on “Savage.” Gideon has had a second feature screenplay optioned, but the film has not yet been produced.
The Portage, Michigan author, and sometimes screenwriter, is a Top Ten Waldenbooks’ best-seller for Harlequin/Silhouette books and has created a series of supernatural romance thrillers about shape shifters called the “Moonlight” series. But what many people don’t know about her, Nancy Gideon and “mom” are not the only two names by which this prolific author is called. She has also written successfully under two different pseudonyms. Just as Stephen King has his Richard Bachmann, Nancy Gideon has also written under the names Dana Ransom and Rosalyn West.
Under the name Dana Ransom, Gideon typically writes historical fiction romance novels, receiving a “Career Achievement for Historical Adventure” from Romantic Times Magazine. The fictitious Dana Ransom has written and co-written more than 20 novels, all love stories that are set in the past. Gideon has written far fewer novels under the pseudonym of Rosalyn West, but she is no less celebrated by the name. As West, which is perhaps a bit of a pun, Gideon writes novels that are considered to be “contemporary western romances.” In 1999, West was awarded the HOLT Medallion by the Virginia Romance Writers Association.
Whichever name you know her by, Nancy Gideon’s work is unmistakable. Filled with passion, love, and lust, readers fall deeper into love with her characters with each and every turn of the page. Gideon should be admired for her talents, which have allowed her to do what she loves for as long as she has, and to continue to do so for as long as she has the desire.

Why can’t I get a copy of Betrayed by Shadows in your Moonlight series?
Hi Sandra – I have no idea. For some reason it seems to have been removed from all stores.
