Michael D. Resnick is a mystery, thriller, horror, fantasy, and science fiction author who has the most awards for short science fiction. The author was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1942 and went to the Chicago based Highland Park High School, before proceeding to the University of Chicago.
It was at university that he met Carol when they bonded over their love for the series Buck Rogers. The one thing that would significantly change the course of his life was when he discovered the fanzine “ERB-dom,” which was focused on the fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Soon after, he began publishing articles and in 1965 published the “Forgotten Sea of Mars.” In 1967, he made his novel writing debut when he published “The Goddess of Ganymede.” Following the publishing of his second novel, he took a break from genre publishing and went on to write pornographic novels using a variety of pseudonyms.
During this time, he bred collies and raced horses in addition to writing columns on the subject. He got back into genre fiction during the 1980s when he wrote for “Battlestar Galactica” and published “Birthright,” the first of the “Far Future History” series of novels.
His very first novels were published in the 1960s, during a time when he was using the name Michael D. Resnick. Even though he continued writing in the 1970s, he wrote under many pseudonyms and none of those works were genre fiction.
During this time, he was one of the members that founded the Chicago organization in charge of Windycon. Over the years, Michael Resnick wrote dozens of anthologies and genre novels and hundreds of short stories that would be published in many publications.
For his work, he got prestigious nominations that included Locus, Nebula and Hugo. By the time of his death he had 37 Hugo nominations, the highest for any other author. “Kirinyaga” his short story won Best Short Story at the 1989 Hugo Awards.
In addition to his writing of novels and short fiction, he was the editor of “Jim Baen’s Universe” between 2007 and 2010 and founded “Galaxy’s Edge,” a publication he edited until his death in 2020.
Mike Resnick was the guest of honor at the 70th Worldcon in Chicago. He died in 2020 after a very long battle with cancer. He left behind his daughter Laura, who is also a fantasy and science fiction author who writes in travel and romance.
“Mutiny,” the first novel of the “Starship” series by Mike Resnick is set three millennia into the future, where the Teroni are in a huge war with the Republic. They are both powerful seafaring societies that can hold their own and it is anyone’s guess who will come out on top.
The Republic’s hero is Wilson Cole, who has won many battles that seemed unwinnable. Even though he often goes off script while on mission, he has been awarded many medals. But for his transgressions, he has been assigned to a ship full of misfits that is sent to a remote cluster, where he can be out of sight.
But things never go according to plan whenever he is involved. At the opening of the novel, he has become a member of the older ships in the Theodore Roosevelt, which is notorious for having an undisciplined crew and a captain who does not care.
Cole does not like their attitude when he arrives and his impressions of the first officer, and the captain do not help his cause much. It is not long before he is summoned by the captain for ignoring orders while on his shift.
Mike Resnick’s novel “Pirate” is set in the Galactic Era three millennia from the present time. The Republic is at war with the Teroni Federation and is struggling to exert its dominance over what it believes is an inferior civilization.
Following his latest exploits, Captain Wilson Cole has found himself at the center of a media frenzy. He has also been made a political scapegoat despite saving millions and serving the military diligently for years. He is to be court martialed but the crew of the Theodore Roosevelt rescue him, resulting in all of them being branded mutineers.
All of them decide to leave the Republic to go find new lives for themselves. Wilson Cole and his comrades refit the Teddy Roosevelt as a pirate ship and head to the lawless frontier.
It is a place patrolled by cut throat pirates and powerful warlords living in struggling colonies that compete for survival in a game that does not give second chances. But military training is not enough for one to transition into a life of plundering and pillaging and Wilson Cole’s principles may stand in the way of his targets.
“Mercenary” by Mike Resnick is set a year after the events of the previous novel. Seeking to find new lives for themselves, Wilson and Cole had refitted their ship into a pirate ship that patrols the inner frontier.
Given their limited experience in raiding and plundering as they were a disciplined military force that valued honor, life would surely become difficult. Wilson Cole suggests that the Theodore Roosevelt become a mercenary ship.
He knows that they stand to make more money by hiring out their services to the highest bidder. Whether it is heading to alien lands to free a client taken captive or evacuating a hospital about to be engulfed by war or stopping extortionate criminal cartels from extracting resources from a terrified planet, they can do it all.
Along the way they form an alliance with Platinum Duke, establish their headquarters at Singapore Station and ally with a former enemy. But the life of a mercenary is difficult and the pirate ship and Wilson Cole will soon have to go against Valkyrie, the former pirate queen and his ex right hand woman.
The fragile trust which previously existed between the two is put under a lot of strain when they work on different sides of a job.
