The Legend of Nightfall
The Legend of Nightfall comes first in the Nightfall series. This story introduces Nightfall, a legendary assassin, swordsman, magic wielder, and adventurer. Nightfall has unique powers any sorcerer would kill to have. Thanks to his abilities, Nightfall manages to escape his pursuers by shifting to another realm and coming back with a new identity. However, one slip leads him to a royal trap where the talented swordsman is tasked with serving and protecting a young prince. Since he is bound by sorcery and forced to oath to guide and guard the prince, Nightfall has no choice but to follow whatever he is instructed to do.
Soon enough, Nightfall realizes that he has to use every trick to keep himself and the prince alive. There are unknown betrayers in every corner, and their lives are often in danger. He is also trying to find out who bound him, their motivation, and what chances he has of escaping. It doesn’t help that the prince is unaware of what is going on. He doesn’t know Nightfall’s nature, and the prince relates to him the way he would with any other servant. These two men are forced to build a relationship, but there is no telling how long their friendship is going to last. Will this be possible given that one of them is being forced into the arrangement?
This is a character-driven story where you will be following a young prince and his powerful master as they undertake different tasks. From acquiring land for the prince to going gambling and horseracing, these two men are going to have quite an adventure. Their relationship doesn’t start off rosy, but Nightfall knows that their bond is one of the ways he will break the spell binding him to the prince. The magic system in the story is quite unique, and it is exciting that people’s abilities can be obtained by sorcerers who want more power for themselves. There are also socio-economic and political undercurrents in the story, and these include a difference in cultures and class structures and violence against women.
The Legend of Nightfall is a captivating story that will have you glued to the pages from start to finish. Once the pace picks up, it will be hard to put the book down, and your curiosity to know what happens next will keep you turning the pages. This book is about 500 pages long, so it may take a few sittings to read it all. Enjoy reading about Nightfall, the legend with multiple disguises, and the prince he is supposed to protect. The book ends with a cliffhanger, but the second in the series is readily available, so you do not have to endure a book hangover.
The Last of the Renshai
The Last of the Renshai comes first in the Renshai Trilogy. This book throws you into a world with an ancient war prophecy as its shadow. Rache Kallmirsson, the lead character, comes from the Renshai tribe. This is one of the northern tribes known for their warrior traits. To others, the Renshais are crazy and murderous, and this is all because their children start practicing how to use a sword immediately they start walking. Because of their pillaging tendencies, Rache’s people had been forced out of the mainland. When a rumor starts that there is a plan to wipe out his tribe, Rache escapes to the town of Santagithi.
Thanks to his outstanding sword skills, Rache becomes a captain in Satagithi. However, his heart is still at home, and he plans to return and revenge on those who slew his race. There is a prophecy about a war that will mark the end of the world, so you can expect that things are going to get messy at some point. Can one man manage to fight against all the races that came together to finish his race? Rache is one cool character, and you are going to enjoy every moment you interact with him. The fight scenes are out of this world, and it is incredible how the story is based on such intriguing mythology.
This book is a perfect beginning to a brilliant series. The author introduces the characters, gives a brief on each, and builds them in a way that will make you care for them. There are different PoV, which makes it easier to understand everything that is happening in the story. The action starts from the first chapter, and once the masters of the sword start fighting, you are going to hope they do not stop. It is fun following Rache as he trains Mitrian and Garn and seeing how they all put their skills into good use. While this story is based on known mythology, it is not set in this world, which is quite interesting. The world-building is done well, and it is easy to get lost in it all.
The Last of the Renshai is an enjoyable story that will hook you from the first page. It is hard to classify it, but you can call it epic fantasy with just the right dose of action and magic. If you are a fantasy, adventure, and action fan, there is no doubt that you love this book. The characters are lovable, the storyline unique, and the tension will keep you turning the pages. Since this book is about 600 pages, you may want to save it for that free weekend when you want to just cozy up with a good read.
