About Melissa Scott
The American author Melissa Scott is well known for her ever inventive and intelligently paced science-fiction novels. Highly regarded for her progressive approach to the genre as well, she’s really managed to make it her own, with some interesting concepts and ideas at the heart of her work. With many of her stories lauded for their bringing LGBT characters to the forefront, she has realistic people in otherwise elaborate otherworldly settings. Often combining science-fiction and fantasy, she delivers something entirely new and interesting in the process, finding fans all across the world.
Constructing each of her universes with expert precision, she really has a strong understanding of what the audience wants. At the same time she also makes sure not to sacrifice her own vision, keeping it grounded and true to what she wants to say. Her settings might be huge and expansive, but they maintain a lot of heart and humanity, offering something honest and authentic. She also often wrote with her partner Lisa A. Barnett, creating many of their stories and worlds together, along with characters that resonate.
Many of her protagonists are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, making for a diverse and fully representational cast in her stories. While it’s not an overall focus of the story, she integrates these characters into her stories with expert precision, making them feel wholly real. This has seen her gain a huge following worldwide, as both the critics and the public alike sing her many praises as an author. With a lot more to come yet, she isn’t stopping any time soon either, as her writing career continues to grow from strength-to-strength.
Early and Personal Life
Born in 1960 on the 7th of August, Melissa Scott was always keenly interested in both reading and writing from an early age. Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the United States, she’d develop this passion from an early age, building upon it over the years. This would see her find her own style and voice, finding inspiration from her own life and the world around her, feeding it back into her work.
Attending Harvard College and Brandeis University, she would gain a PhD in comparative history, giving her work an academic basis. Later she would go on to focus on science-fiction and fantasy, meeting fellow writer and partner Lisa Anne Barnett, as the two of them would co-author a series of books. Living together in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for twenty-seven years until the unfortunate passing of Lisa Barnett in 2006, Scott now continues to write to this present day.
Writing Career
Publishing her first novel in 1984, Melissa Scott would make her debut with the title ‘The Game Beyond,’ which was a stand-alone work of science-fiction. One year later in 1985 she would go on to start the ‘Roads of Heaven’ trilogy, beginning with the novel ‘Fifth-Twelfths of Heaven’. In 1992 she’d start the ‘Dreamships’ series, followed by the ‘Astreiant’ franchise and ‘Points of Hope’ in 1995, which she’d write with Lisa Barnett.
Speaking out about her craft, teaching others and passing on her learning, Scott also lectures regularly, including providing lessons from her own website. Winning plenty of awards, she’s also gone on to receive the Lambda Literary Awards, as well as gaining the Joseph W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in Science-Fiction in 1986. This has all seen her become a huge success worldwide as more and more discover her work everyday, and will continue to do so for years to come.
Point of Sighs
Originally released in 2018, this would first come out on the 24th of April to a lot of acclaim, with an already eager audience awaiting its release. Setting up the fifth book in the ‘Astreiant’ series of novels, it really captures the energy of the previous two books, while also bringing in its own sense of excitement. Published through the ‘Lethe Press’ publishing label, it’s a must for any fans of the author and series, as well as fans of fantasy in general.
There’s a heavy police procedural element here, combining many fantasy elements together in a hybrid perspective of the genres. It works to the book’s advantage, making the most of its fun and engaging premise, really bringing the core of the story to life. The many characters are also very well played, giving them a real sense of drive and proper motivation continually throughout.
Setting about with organizing the City Guard, a group who have been mired in controversy, Philip Eslingen has to contend with this task in the now damp Autumn in the city of Astreiant. Bringing a rivalry to the surface, a tea captain is murdered set in the Point of Sighs, while the Point of Dreams is where Adjunt Point Nicolas Rathe, Eslingen’s lover, is dealing with a Dreams merchant. There’s an extortion going on, with the dockers located at the Point of Sighs being subject to it, while corruption takes hold. Will the many threads of corruption be untangled? Can they keep the ancient evil being unleashed, with the city’s River Sier now teeming with corpses? What really happened at the Point of Sighs?
Empress of Earth
Initially published in 1987 on the 1st of November, this would first come out through the ‘Baen’ publishing outlet. Marking the third title in the ongoing ‘Roads of Heaven’ series of novel, it’s the conclusion of a science-fiction and fantasy series. An early collection of novels from Melissa Scott, it shows her clear development as an author with something important to say. It’s got a lot of strong ideas within its story, and it really has a powerful message at its heart, one which many readers continue to appreciate.
Guarded well from any potential invading forces, both internal and external, the road to Earth is well protected, with its defences high. In the meantime Silence must fight with her husbands, while the Rose Worlders stand against all of them brandishing their siege weapons. Struggling for the entirety of the world, a cataclysmic shift is underway, with the existence of everything at stake. Will they be able to protect their world? Can they save themselves in the process? What will become of the Empress of Earth?

Curious about the 6th book of the Order of the Air series. I believe it was going to be called Fire Season. Will it ever be published?
Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any updates about that book going back the last few years. Last I saw was a post in 2016 saying it was in the works.
