Melanie Karsak is a USA Today and NY Times bestselling writer of science fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy stories. She hails from Warren, Pennsylvania, United States, and has several popular novel series to her name. The list of series written by her includes The Harvesting series, the Steampunk Red Riding Hood novels, The Celtic Blood book series, the Steampunk Fairy Tales, and The Airship Racing Chronicles series. Her novels are widely famous for their rich content, exciting characters, amazing storylines, and wonderful settings. Karsak considers herself a zombie whisperer and a steampunk connoisseur. Currently, she resides in Florida along with her beloved husband a couple of kids. In addition to being a popular author, Karsak works as an Assistant Professor at Eastern Florida State College. She teaches English Literature to college students.
The Steampunk stories penned by the author are actually retellings of several classic fairy stories that take place in her steampunk universe. In her steampunk books, she has depicted the lead characters in the form of Agent Clemeny Louvel, a forme thief named Alice, a tinker named Belle, and an actress named Elyse. While growing up, Karsak developed a deep interest in the steampunk genre. She has seen many fairy tales/steampunk COS plays and reversed engineered to write her own books. Whenever author Karsak decides to write fairy tale retellings, she tries to read as many original works as possible as research. This gives her a chance to understand those stories better and get to know the underlying symbolism and message. After that, she attempts to create her own universe and use the characters and settings of the original stories in them.
On a typical day, Karsak usually spends her mornings to write a manuscript of her ongoing novels after sending her children off to school. Sometimes, she writes before they are awake. It happens a lot of times that Karsak plans to write the desired word count enthusiastically, but doesn’t reach that mark due to various reasons. So, to make up for that, she tries to complete double word counts on holidays. The most difficult part about writing for the author is the length. She is more interested in writing short-novellas. So, when it comes to writing long stories, she feels exhausted from the very beginning. Karsak likes to write action-packed stories with page-turning sequences, which often end quickly than the expectation of the readers.
The best accomplishment of Karsak’s life is getting her first novel published. It was a life-changing experience for her and took a lot of courage and dedication to do something like that. She considers herself blessed to be able to share her stories with others. Karsak doesn’t plan to have a change of course in the coming years as she wants to keep writing for as long as she can. She has always known writing and nothing else. So, she wants to improve her writing skills in the coming years so that she can try her hand at writing stories in other genres as well. The first time Karsak wrote something was when she was 12 years old. Its memory is still fresh in her mind. The story was based on a mafia boss, who had a singer girlfriend.
Karsak always reads the reviews received by her books. Mostly, they are positive, so she doesn’t feel the need to reply to them. If some negative reviews come her way, she tries to take it as constructive feedback. This allows her to keep in mind what her readers want from her and how she should approach writing her future novels. Historical fantasy has always been Karsak’s strength. She loves to roam around through her mind and visit various places of historical importance. Sometimes, her mind is in Medieval Scotland and some other times, it is in Victorian England. One person who has always been an inspiration to Karsak is her mother. She helped her develop an interest in reading and writing. When she was small, her mother used to read to her. She even helped her discover her favorite genre.
One author who has always influenced Karsak is Pauline Creeden. The two know each other personally and Pauline has played the role of Karsak’s mentor. Karsak thinks Pauline is a wonderful friend and a fabulous author. During her rookie days, Pauline taught her the nuances of writing and became her good friend. Whenever Karsak gets stuck somewhere in her writing process, she looks up to Pauline’s works for more inspiration.
A popular novel series penned by author Melanie Karsak is known as the Celtic Blood series. It began in 2014 and features the lead characters in the roles of King Malcolm, Gruoch, Banquo, Ynes Verleath, Gillacoemgain, Macbeth, Duncan, and several others. Author Karsak has set this historical fiction/fantasy series in Scotland during the early 11th century. Gruoch is depicted as the central character in all the books. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Highland Raven’. It was released by the Clockpunk Press publication in 2014. This novel begins in 1026 in Scotland and introduces Gruoch as a descendant of the MacAlpin line. She was destined to become Scotland’s Queen and live her life with ease and comfort. But, her fate had something else planned for her. Following the untimely death of her father, who is rumored to have been murdered in a plot carried by King Malcolm, Gruoch’s future hangs in the balance with uncertainty.
With the determination of avenging her father’s murder and saving her family line, Gruoch escapes to a stronghold, which is under the security of the Celtic Gods. There, she gets involved in arcane craft. The encounters she comes across in the stronghold make her realize that Scotland is filled with much stronger magic than she imagined. Later, she starts dreaming about a raven-haired man, who haunts her in sleep, making her think that her fate is not hers. As Gruoch is duty-bound to get married to a powerful lord, her heart doesn’t want to do it anymore after she comes across the gallant highlander Banquo.
The next installment of the series is called ‘Highland Blood’. It was also published by Clockpunk Press in 2016. This novel starts in 1032 and shows that Gruoch gets called away from Verleath due to a marriage contract. She moves out with the hope of reuniting with Banquo. Gruoch’s hopes get shattered as the story progresses as she faces betrayal, violence, and lies in her path. As her destiny plays a terrible game with her, she gets involved with another man. Gruoch’s condition worsens so much that she is unable to handle the brutality. At the same time, it causes the growth of a fierce power inside her that increases her craving for bloody revenge.
