Mayra Cuevas is a published author of fiction.
She is also a journalist, working in a professional capacity for CNN as a news editor, a writer, and a special projects and digital and television producer for the channel since 2004. She works to produce stories that are inspirational that have a decided focus on the human spirit and the best that it has to offer.
Cuevas was born in Puerto Rico, where she was raised. She enjoys writing love stories that conclude happily. She is the author of her own romantic comedy novel for young adults, a contemporary book called Salty, Bitter, Sweet that came out from HarperCollins. The book was published in 2020.
Cuevas has also written a short story. Her fictional story made its debut in issue four of the serial young adult anthology Foreshadow and was published in April of 2019. The story was selected by Becky Albertalli, a best selling author, to be featured in the anthology.
When the author is not busy working or writing something, she fills the time and preserves her sanity by doing Buddhist meditation. She is also on the Kadampa Meditation Center Georgia’s Board of Directors. She practices modern Buddhism as well as meditation.
She resides in Norcross, Georgia (a town that she describes as charming) along with her husband and their cat. Her spouse is also a journalist that works for CNN. She also serves as a stepmother to two sons that provide some inspiration for stories. The family has appeared on the television show Buying and Selling with the Property Brothers in its second season.
She was fairly young when she found novels authored by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende. At twelve years old, she knew that she was witnessing some amazing writing. She decided that she wanted to follow in their footsteps and tell stories. Cuevas thought that the best career for an individual that wanted to get paid for telling stories was journalism.
She clearly made it into the field and ever since pursuing journalism she has seen her work featured on HLN, CNN, Court Tv, and the EFE International News Agency. She has reported on everything from international events to local ones. She says that while she enjoys her work, selling her first novel was a huge thrill that nothing compares to.
In addition to writing, Mayra has many things that she enjoys. She likes to go on retreats for silent meditation, she likes to cook for the people closest to her in her life, enjoying the rain and staying home when it’s raining outside, going to new places, watching episodes of The Office and Seinfeld, making her own ice cream, and books that have humorous lines in them. She also smiles when her husband decides to suggest that the male protagonists in her writing should ideally be inspired by him.
Salty, Bitter, Sweet is the first fictional novel to come out from Mayra Cuevas. This contemporary young adult book is her first exploration into writing a full length book. It’s an Own Voices novel that has a main character that is Latina and speaks three languages. The character and the story is partly inspired by Cuevas’s own relationships both with family and with food.
If you are looking for a unique and sweet romantic story with a slow burn and love food, this is the perfect read for you! Main character Isabella Fields is just seventeen years old, and she wants to be a chef.
When it comes to becoming a top chef, that is her dream. But it turns out that there’s more to working in the field than avoiding getting chopped. She does want to be a star when it comes to working in the kitchen, and a new crush on a boy might just be starting to heat up. But will her attraction to this guy end up distracting her from her aspirations to become a chef?
It turns out that life is about to throw her for a loop, and she never sees it coming. Her life with her family is slowly falling apart. First her Cuban grandmother passes away, and then she finds out that her parents are getting divorced. It’s a tough time, and her father has already moved on. He’s literally moved to France and just like that, Isabella has a stepmother named Margo to get used to.
Even though she’s spending time with her father and his new romantic interest, she cannot help but feel like she is on the outside looking in when it comes to the entirely new life her father has built for herself. She’s doing everything she can to accept it, but it’s difficult when her first instinct is to continually start and also avoid the conversation with him about his motivations for cheating on her mother.
It seems ironic that her father already has someone new while she seems to always be single. But if she’s going to be a single young woman, then the least that she can do is figure out how she’s going to balance things being a chef. She’s trying to find the silver lining and just keep forging ahead until she gets where she wants to be in the kitchen and her career.
There are some positives to her life falling apart, however. Where she’s living now is just a half of an hour away from Chef Pascal Grattard’s restaurant. The world renowned chef has a kitchen apprenticeship that he runs. This amazing job would be just the shot that Isabella needs to get her life back on track and get some top training at one of the best restaurants in the business.
She also wants a chance to show that she has the right stuff to work in a high end kitchen. She’s also dealing with a lot of stress and grief surrounding her grandmother’s passing and the demise of her parent’s marriage. Then the attractive Diego enters the picture. She’s trying to keep it together, but she’s not doing well in her apprenticeship, her grandmother is gone, and Margo is pregnant.
Can she survive her attraction to Diego and the kitchen too? Find out by picking up a copy of this book!
