Marthe Jocelyn
Author Marthe Jocelyn was born in Toronto, Ontario in the year 1956. When she was a child, she enjoyed books and going to the theatre. With her brothers and sister, she performed quite a few circuses and plays in the backyard.
She attended high school in Toronto, however she chose to work instead of attending college. Marthe had a bunch of different jobs before becoming an author, which include: a cookie seller, a sailor, a toy designer, a theatre usher, a photo stylist, and a waitress. She also owned her own company for fifteen years, which was called Jesse Design.
For thirty years, she lived in New York City, however returned to Canada, living in the city that her parents grew up in, Stratford, Ontario.
Marthe is a recipient of the prestigious Vicky Metcalf Award for her body of work in the year 2009. “Earthly Astonishments” was shortlisted for the Red Cedar Book Award and the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award, and was a finalist for the Canadian Library book of the Year for Children Award.
“Mable Riley” won the inaugural TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. “Hannah’s Collections” was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Literary Award for illustration. One of her picture books, called “Sam Sorts”, was honored by the United States Board on Books for Youth as being an Outstanding International Book.
“Earthly Astonishments” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2000. During the late nineteenth century, in a mere dot of a town of Westley, lives Josephine. She is the smallest girl in the world, standing at just twenty-two inches tall and her parents charge gawkers one penny a piece to look at her, until they realize there’s the headmistress of MacLaren Academy for Girls that’s willing to pay even more.
Josephine, while at the academy, is treated like a lowly slave and gets tormented by some of the fine young ladies that go there. Until she steals five gold dollars and runs off. She finds herself a new life with R. J. Walters’ Museum of Earthly Astonishments. Among some of the other human curiosities in this Coney Island freak show, she finds a family like she’s never known before, and some dangers much greater than any other she had ever dreamed about.
This is a riveting book of injustice and adventure.
“The Body Under the Piano” is the first novel in the “Aggie Morton, Mystery Queen” series and was released in the year 2020. A charming and smart middle-grade mystery series that stars Aggie Morton (young detective) and Hector (her friend) that was inspired by the imagined life of Agatha Christie when she was a kid and Hercule Poirot, her most popular creation.
Aggie Morton lives in a tiny town located on the coast of England in the year 1902. Imaginative and adventurous yet deeply shy, she has not got a whole lot to do since her beloved dad’s death. Until that fateful day comes when she crosses paths with Hector Perot, a 12 year old Belgian immigrant, and finds a corpse on the floor of the Mermaid Dance Room!
While the number of suspects increases and this murder threatens to rip the town to shreds, Aggie and her new buddy are going to need every single tool at their disposal; including their deductive skills, their insatiable curiosity, and not a little bit of help from their friends, in order to solve this case. Which they’ll need to do before her beloved dance instructor gets charged with a crime that Aggie is certain she did not commit.
Filled with adventure, mystery, an unforgettable heroine, and several helpings of sweets and tea, this is quite the clever debut.
“Peril at Owl Park” is the second novel in the “Aggie Morton, Mystery Queen” series and was released in the year 2020. Aggie Morton, an aspiring writer, can’t wait for Christmas to come. She is coming off solving a murder and surviving her own brush with death in the tiny town of Torquay on the coast of England. She cannot wait to spend the holidays with Marjorie, her sister and the new Lady Greyson of Owl Park, which is an enormous manor house in the country; Hector Perot, her partner in crime and fellow sleuth; and Grannie Jane.
Owl Park holds various delights, which include Lucy (Aggie’s almost cousin), glamorous and exciting visitors from Ceylon as well as disguises aplenty which come in the form of a traveling acting troupe. Not to mention this one secret passageway as well as a cursed and gigantic emerald.
Not even the glowering old Lady Greyson (the elder) can possibly interfere with Aggie’s own festive good cheer. However when Aggie and her buddies find a corpse instead of their presents Christmas morning things take a more deadly serious turn. With help from a certain nosy reporter, Hector and Aggie are going to yet again put their collective imaginations and deductive reasoning skills to good use to locate the killer out on the loose.
“The Dead Man in the Garden” is the third novel in the “Aggie Morton, Mystery Queen” series and was released in the year 2021. For Hector and Aggie, a simple spa stay gets a whole lot more thrilling when two corpses are found in this third installment of the “Aggie Morton” series.
Aggie Morton is prepared to just enjoy an invigorating trip to a spa in Yorkshire, where her widowed mom can take some waters and recover after a long mourning period. Recently solving another murder and faced with some extreme peril with Hector over Christmas, puts Aggie’s own Morbid Preoccupation on alert when there are rumors abounding on the spa’s recently dead ex-patient. Then there’s another corpse that shows up under mysterious circumstances.
Together with Grannie Jane, and often in the company of a young patient at the spa, named George, Hector and Aggie take a much closer look at the staff and guests at the Wellspring Hotel. And they venture into the intriguing world of the town undertaker. Could there have been a murder? Possibly even two? While Hector and Aggie ignite their deductive skills, their restful takes a more suddenly dangerous turn.
