Mark Dawson is one of the most famous English authors who is very well known for writing thriller novels. He is particularly famous for and currently writing three novels series’ John Milton, Beatrix Rose and Soho Noir. After being born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, he was raised in Manchester and Chicago, Illinois.

The John Milton series was his first noteworthy series after trying his hand on a few stand alone novels. Mark has said in his interviews that before becoming a well established author he used to work as a lawyer, serving his clients in the City of London and Soho, West End of London. Most of his clients included money launderers initially, but after a few years he began serving the celebrities who used to sue newspapers for libel.

As of today, Mark works with the U.K film industry other than writing novels and lives along with his family in Wiltshire, England. His family includes his wife, a couple of children and a dog and two cats as pets. He had started his journey as a fresh author in the year 2001 by publishing his first stand alone novel, which received moderate reviews.

However, he was not able to publish any novel until 2013. Then he began working on the John Milton series, which opened the floodgates of his fame and allowed him to publish multiple novels in a period two years. Along with that, he was able to publish novels of other thriller series’ as well.

Mark likes to write his novels, particularly in the suspense, thriller and mystery genres; and says that he was greatly inspired by the successful works of authors such as Bret Easton Ellis, Robert Ludlum, James Elroy and Stephen King. His famous novels have been published in multiple languages all over the world, over the years. The Soho Noir series written by him is set between the years 1940 and 1970 and takes place in the West End of London.

The initial novel of this series revolves around a serial killer who used to operate during the Blitz. It was followed by another one which deals with a criminal family during that time. Some parts of these novels resemble the real life characters, but nothing much is known and described about them in the series. The John Milton series shows the story of a disgruntled and disgraced special agent, who used to do terrible things by making use of his authoritative power.

But now, he tries to help people in order to make amends for his wrong doings. Author Mark Dawson admits that he used to watch a lot of The Equalizer series in his youth, as he has spent his growing years during the 80s. In the novels of the series, it is depicted that John Milton tries to put his past behind, but doesn’t see much success in it.

He decides to help those in need in order to atone his bloody hands, which he stained as a British assassin. Initially, he tried to adapt amongst the East London gangs, but had to struggle a lot. Depicting interesting plots and exciting characters, the novels of the series went on to become bestsellers and stayed so for a long time.

The John Milton series written by Mark Dawson consists of a total of 7 novels published between the years 2013 and 2015. It shows the main character John Milton as an assassin, who considers himself as a craftsman and artisan in his art of committing murders. He is introduced as a man sent by the government to kill the notorious people after they fail in trying everything else. John is described as a ruthless, lethal and brilliant assassin.

The criminals used to get frightened after hearing his name, such was his reputation. But, ten years have passed and he thinks that he had killed enough people to take him to hell. Now he wants to help people in order to lessen the burden on his shoulders.

However, the profession is such that it is not possible to just walk away from it. The first novel of the series was published in the year 2013 by the Black Dog publishing house. It was titled ‘The Cleaner’ and introduces the past life of John Milton as a ruthless assassin.

After not being able to walk away from his job, he decides to go on the run and tries to help all those who meets him on his way in order to seek atonement for his deadly sins. However, his past does not seem to be forgotten easily and now he is being hunted for trying to walk away from being the hunter in his past.

The plot of the novel opens with the depiction of John Milton as a state-sanctioned killer and thinks that he is done with his profession. He seems to be troubled by nightmares and ghosts, who frequently torment him in his dreams.

Being not able to tolerate it, John decides that his next job will be his last and that he will start making amends for all that he has done in the past since then. While on the run, he meets a woman named Sharon Warriner who is a fearful single mother thinking that her son is lost in the gangs of London. Milton first saves her from committing suicide and then promises her to bring her son back. However, the gang and its charismatic leader are in no mood to cooperate with him.

Later, John finds himself stuck in an unfamiliar territory as the city of London burns in summer riots. To add to his problems, his employers at the agency send another agent to kill him, which stack the odds against him even higher.

The second novel of the series was published under the title ‘Saint Death’ by the same publishing house in the year 2013. In this novel, John Milton is shown as being off the grids for about 6 months. However, he finds himself drawn in another dangerous battle with the narcotics gangs, who control the borders in Juarez, Mexico.

He becomes their prime target after saving a young and idealistic journalist who was targeted to be executed by them. In order to ensure her safety, Milton thinks of smuggling her into Texas. He takes the help of an untouchable police officer and a bounty hunter for making the crossing. Till then, he must safeguard her from the narco-gangs in Mexico.

John finds out that the assassin appointed for killing the young journalist is the legendary Santa Muerta – The Saint and understands that it is going to be a very difficult task to save her from the legendary assassin and smuggle into Texas.

I have recently discovered the Atticus Priest Books, am on book 3, and love them. They are so well written and do not rely on the stupidity of characters to inflate the storylines. I’ll be reading all your books Mark – from Pam in NZ.

I think they first meet in a short novel in the Beatrix Rose series. The book is called Phoenix. It also introduces Isabella Rose. What I can’t find as anything that covers John Miltons time in Group 15. The Cleaner starts when he left and from just starting the Beatrix Rose series so do those.
