The novel opens in 1999 as a young Russian Lawyer, Oleg Kraskin, plans to ask the father of his long-time girlfriend, Marina, for permission to marry his daughter. However, there is one problem Marina’s father, Aleksander Luganov, the former head of the Russian Federal Security Service and the current prime minister.

Aleksandr Ivanovich Luganov was the prime minister of Russia in 1999 when many apartment bombs were exploding across Moscow. With a sick president, Luganov had to assume the role and nominate Oleg Kraskin as his senior assistant. Kraskin is shocked by his decision and feels honored, and his son admits to dating Luganov’s daughter.

He hopes he’ll marry her one day, so he introduces the topic to Luganov early enough. While working with Luganov, Kraskin witnesses his boss assume the role of the president of the Russian Federation, hoping to put the country back to its original place.

Fast forward to twenty-one-year-old Marcus is living in Colorado, hoping to make a name for himself, only to find himself in jail.
