The American author and novelist of science-fiction and fantasy Larry Niven is a well regarded writer known for his sense of imaginative scope and scale, creating worlds and landscapes that stretch throughout the universe and beyond. Taking his readers on a journey he really manages to give his readers something to dive into, allowing them to escape almost, whilst also providing them with characters that are easy to relate to and resonate with on an emotional level. One of the hardest factors when writing science-fiction and fantasy novels is giving them a sense of grounding, and this is something that Larry Niven really manages as an author working within the genre. Not only that, but he has also effectively collaborated with other fellow genre authors too over the years, as he allows them to expand upon his many ideas and worlds, taking his franchises forwards in a creative and engaging manner. Most of this essentially comes down to the fact that what he has created is already so well drawn, a factor which makes it far easier for other talented writers to build upon in a creative and stylish manner. Over the course of his entire writing career he has used grand science-fiction concepts that allow the reader to retain a sense of the believable in his concepts, as they take big ideas and give them a sense of purpose, ultimately driving his stories towards a thrilling conclusion. Mainly using the detective genres as his templates too, along with the contemporary adventure novel, he really creates a narrative that carries his audience along, keeping them continually guessing right until the very last page. This ensures that his readers keep coming back for more regardless of which author has taken the mantel for that particular series or franchise. With a whole host of example franchises, he has a lot to offer in this particular department, with many of them currently carrying on to this present day. One such series is that of his Man-Kzin Wars series of novels, as they are set within the ‘Known Space’ universe that was previously established in Larry Niven’s prior franchise. Effectively using a whole range of authors, it manages to incorporate a variety of different stories, both longer and shorter, as they build upon the universe itself, taking it forwards in new and bold directions. With the future of mankind being pitted in a long and epic series of battles with the alien race known as the Kzinti, this manages to bring the fantastical world to life even more than before.

With fourteen different novels coming out in this spin-off from the ‘Known Space’ franchise, this particular series uses a whole range of different authors to tell the many stories, all with Larry Niven himself overseeing it as editor and collaborator. Starting out in 1988, it has continued for nigh on twenty-five years, with the last title, ‘Man-Kzin Wars XIV’, being published in 2013. Along with this there has also been a collection of different prequels and mini-novellas working into the main overall narrative arc of the series, thus ensuring that it’s one of his most comprehensive series to date.

The Man-Kzin Wars I

Published through Baen Books in 1988, this was later re-released on the 15th of June in 2006, setting up the first in a long-running franchise of much loved novels. Establishing the world from what it originally was in the ‘Known Space’ franchise, this manages to take the series forwards in a new, fun and exciting direction. With a range of different authors contributing to this first novel, it manages to take in a variety of different voices, all effectively bringing their own styles and perspectives to the table for this collection of short stories set within this world.

During the earliest days of interplanetary exploration, humanity is still new to the stars, which is when they are set upon by an alien race known only as the Kzinti. Unbeknownst to this alien race though, they find that their battle may be a little harder than they initially expected, as they find humanity far more resilient than they first appeared. The reason humanity gave up war among themselves so long ago was that they were so good at it, and this is something the Kzinti are soon to discover, much to their peril. Who will succeed? Can humanity triumph victorious? What will become of the first in the series of Man-Kzin Wars?

The Man-Kzin Wars II

Essentially creating a collection of short-stories again, this was once again brought out through the Baen Books publishing label to much acclaim, providing further exploits set within the ‘Known Space’ universe. With Larry Niven himself writing the introduction himself again, he joins another group of writers to bring the reader more stories charting these epic battles set in space. Originally published in 1989, it would carry on from where the last left off, allowing the world and everything within it to be further built upon and developed to an even greater degree.

Presenting themselves as pseudo-pacifists, humanity have effectively taken the alien race of extreme hunters known as the Kzinti by surprise. Having defeated them once before, they return again to wreak their revenge on the human race, only to find that they can still put up a fight, taking them by surprise and continuing to defeat them every time. This time, though, it seems they are more finely tuned to everything the human race has up its sleeve, and they wont be fooled again. Will humanity prevail? Can they survive this ordeal? How will they fare in the second of the great Man-Kzin Wars?

The Man-Kzin Wars Series

As far as epic science-fiction series set deep within the furthest reaches of space goes, fans of the modern genre couldn’t expect any better than this. With Larry Niven clearly being within his element as an author and modern master of the form, he really makes this work, thus creating one of his most memorable and effective franchises to date. With a lot more room to continue expanding upon this in the following years to come, this doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon, as it continues on into the foreseeable future.
