The Magnificent Devices book series is an acclaimed series of fantasy, science fiction, young adult, Steampunk, and historical novels. It is written by a prominent Canadian-born American writer named Shelley Adina. The series is comprised of a total of 14 books released between 2011 and 2018. Shelley has done the settings of the books in the 19th century alternate Victorian era. It is shown that the combustion engines are flopping and the steam powered devices have the capability to send the adventurous people to other cities and continents. Some of the devices are even capable of transporting people to another world. Shelley Adina has also depicted that the society is divided into two sections. One section is called Wits, which consists of people using their intellect to move forward in life, while the other section is called Bloods that is comprised of people having inheritances. The central character in all the books is shown as Lady Claire Trevelyan.
Shelley has described Claire as a Blood by birth, but she possesses the mind, heart, and soul of a Wit. Because of possessing the mixture of characteristic from both the sections, Claire Trevelyan lands in trouble very often. At the series’ beginning, Claire Trevelyan is introduced as a 17 year old girl, who goes on to become famous as the ‘Lady of Devices’. The setting is done primarily in London. Claire’s father, Viscount St Ives, expects her to learn all the traits of a lady of high status so that he can find a wealthy husband for her. But, Claire realizes that she is not destined to keep herself closed indoors. She goes on to explore her real talents in the chemistry lab.
After her father suffers a huge loss in combustion engine manufacturing, Claire is forced to come down to the mean London streets. She comes across a Royal Society of Engineers’ member named Andrew Malvern, and sets herself on the course of achieving her dreams. She experiences various betrayals and obstacles in her path, but overcomes all of them with the help of her intellect. In addition to Claire Trevelyan, author Adina has mentioned many other important characters in this series, including James Selwyn, Andrew Malvern, Maggie Polgarth, Lizzie Polgarth, Claude Seacombe, Alice Chalmers, Jake, Gloria Meriweather-Astor, Ian Hollys, Hugh Meriweather-Astor, Evan Douglas, Ned Mose, Margrethe Amelia Linden, Emma Makepiece, Peony Churchill, Claude, etc. This series is linked with another successful series of Shelley Adina known as the Mysterious Devices.
