Lurlene McDaniel is a published American author. She has authored over seventy novels for young adults. One of her books was the inspiration for Shattered Hearts, a 1998 movie.
McDaniel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1944. She is known for writing books that deal with mostly younger adults that are having to confront themes of mortality or chronic illness. Her writing career started out as a way to deal with her own experience as her son was ultimately diagnosed as having juvenile diabetes.
The characters in her books often contend with medical afflictions with everything from diabetes to organ failure and cancer, as well as dealing with loved ones’ passing. She tries to make her stories as medically accurate as possible. In order to accomplish this, she does her research. This involves having interviews with professionals in the health field. She also works with hospices and different medical groups.
Lurlene also takes the Bible and studies it to try and help give her work an infusion of that human element. This includes ethics and values that she feels can sometimes be passed by. She also likes to emphasize the human element alongside the seeming coldness of technology.
She attended the University of South Florida and graduated. She now lives not in Florida but in the state of Tennessee. She has also written a column for a magazine and done various works for radio as well as television and marketing. In addition to being an author, she has often given lectures as a guest speaker often.
Lurlene McDaniel is the creator and the author of the Dawn Rochelle series. This fictional series of novels for young adults first became available to readers in 1985. This is when the debut book in the series came out. It is titled Six Months to Live and as you might have guessed from the title, it is about young people that are dealing with medical issues that may mean that they never grow up. The second book came out shortly after and is titled I Want to Live. The fifth book in the series is titled To Live Again and came out in 2001.
Six Months To Live is the first novel in the Dawn Rochelle series by Lurlene McDaniel. If you are looking for some new young adult fiction to read, then this might be a great fit for you! Particularly if you love stories like John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, check out this debut story in the series for yourself!
In this book, readers get to meet the main character for the first time. Dawn Rochelle is just thirteen years old and is pretty much just like any other girl her age. She doesn’t have that much to contend with and just spends her time going to school and planning what she’s going to wear for the dances or what she’s going to do with her hair for cheerleading.
She sees her life going a lot of ways. The last thing that Dawn ever counted on was coming down with cancer. This type of illness is something that is supposed to happen to other people that are different or older. Anyone but her. It doesn’t make sense to her that she is the one that has been chosen out of all the people alive to come down with something as terrible as cancer, and she just doesn’t get it.
Dawn can’t help but feel like she’s been cheated. This is supposed to be the time in her life where she can enjoy being her age. She thought she would have the same chance to have fun and just be young that her friends do. Now she knows that she has something about her that makes her different from everyone else her age.
Dawn must confront the fact that she has been diagnosed with cancer. It may not fit in with her vision of her life, but sometimes you have to change your plans up when life requires it. Dawn’s getting a quick lesson in reality and how sometimes you can’t control what happens to you. When you can’t choose what’s going on in your life, you have to choose the way that you respond to it as that is the only thing within your control.
She is about to gear up for what could be the most difficult fight that she has gone through to date. Indeed, it may end up being the toughest thing that she ever does. She knows that she has to not only take on this battle but win in the end. That is the only thing that she wants in life and when it comes to her diagnosis, it’s not good.
Dawn’s been told that she only has 6 months left in the worst case prognosis to live. Even though that’s what they tell her, she simply refuses to believe that is all the time that she has left. What will she do and will she get better or worse? Pick up the dramatic debut story in this series to find out!
I Want To Live is the second novel in this series. When it comes to fictional stories involving sickness, this one is sure to make you sad and hopeful and many more emotions all at once!
Dawn Rochelle was just 13 when she found out she was sick and had 6 months left. That’s what they told her, but now she’s fourteen and beating the odds. Her year has certainly been busy; she attended summer camp and helped her older brother plan his wedding.
She always has tried to keep a good attitude about what’s going on in her life. She has been doing all that she can to try and get over the cancer, the horrible leukemia monster that was threatening to take her entire life away.
Now she is in remission, and that is the best place to be. She believes that she will get better. But when she finds out that she’s getting sick once more, she must wait to find out what’s going on. Could the cancer have returned? Will she live another year? Pick up this sequel to find out.

Hi! My auntie gave me the dawn Rochelle series and angels trilogy for Christmas one year, me and my friend read the books and both spent time crying over the loss of Sandy Chandler and Marlee Hodges from The Dawn Rochelle series. I love your books so much! I got a bunch more now! I have reread them over and over and every single time I end up crying over the losses of loved ones from the books! I hope to get more of your books and continue reading them! Lurlene Mcdaniel is my favourite author!
I don’t remember the name of the book, but it was about a 17 year old named Allyson having kidney failure and her 14 year old sister Kelly is the one that gave her a kidney. I have been trying to find this book for years. If you can help me it would be appreciated, thank you Ms.Lurlene McDaniel.
Hi Judy – I’m not sure on that one. There is Saving Jessica where Jessica is suffering from kidney failure.
