Since the talented author thinks life is much better with magic, she enjoys incorporating fantasy and the paranormal in her intriguing stories.
Once Bitten
Once Bitten comes first in the Shadow Guild: The Rebel series. The book introduces Carrow Burton, a young lady who can see things well before they happen. To many, Carrow is just a weirdo who enjoys spending all her free time alone with a feral raccoon as a company. However, she is a caring person who is not afraid to step up when the occasion calls for it. When she sees someone killing a man, Carrow swings into action, hoping to stop the heinous crime. However, she is a little bit late, and the man is already dead by the time she gets to him. The police arrive just after she gets to the scene, and they immediately arrest her, accusing her of the murder. Can Carrow get herself out of this awful position?
Well, it turns out one of the men in uniform is someone Carrow had helped solve a few cases thanks to her unique gift. This police officer offers an escape for Carrow, and she is all too happy to get a chance to solve this murder and clear her name. This is how Carrow finds herself in a magical city hidden in London. In this city lives a vampire who is sexy yet scary and the owner of Guild City. The heat between Carrow and this vampire, also known as the Devil of Darkvale, is irresistible from the start, and it is clear that she should stay away from him. However, Carrow is so determined to solve the murder that she doesn’t mind confronting the devil himself.
Join Carrow in this magical world characterized by witch parties, a vampire with a dark past, and magical guilds. It is not an ideal world for her, but it seems like it is the only way to avoid going to jail. Carrow’s magical powers grow the deeper she gets into this story, and she discovers new friends who help in her search for the truth. The mix of supernatural creatures gives this story quite an edge, and the unending tension leaves you curious to see what happens next. It is heartbreaking that being in the wrong place and time has such huge consequences for Carrow. However, from the start, it is clear that this young lady can take care of herself.
Once Bitten is a delightful read filled with magic, lovable characters, and just the right dose of fantasy. The secret world in the story is fresh, and the flow is great. Carrow is such a likable character. It is amazing that even at her lowest, she is not afraid to take on the devil. Mac is a great secondary character, and you can only hope to see more of him in subsequent books. This book is perfect if you like paranormal stories with a strong female lead character.
Trial by Fae
Trial by Fae comes first in the Dragon’s Gift: The Dark Fae series. The book stars Maria, the blood sorcerers and demon slayer with dragon blood. While she holds an important job in the universe, her role as Demon Slayer is nothing she could really shout about. It was important that she kept it secret if she was to keep her job and live a normal life. Everything is going great until a Fae king enters Mari’s life. It doesn’t take long for the King to discover that Mari has dragon blood, and once her secret is out, this young lady knows that life is never going to be the same again.
It turns out that Mari is meant to be the Fae King’s mate. Even though the king hates her, he cannot hide the deep attraction he feels in her presence. When Mari is sent on an undercover assignment in the land of the Fae, she hopes that things will cool off for her a little bit. Mari’s boss wants to know why the balance between dark and light is off. The evidence shows that Tarron is responsible, but Mari is determined to find the whole truth. However, even in disguise, the king still wants her. She finds it hard to understand him since he is protective of her one minute and completely cold the next moment.
Mari is such a lovable character. Her tough exterior and personality make her unforgettable. While she is brave to take on whatever crosses her path, Mari is also compassionate. Tarron seems so cold, but thanks to Mari, we get to see another side of him. The epilogue at the end gives insight into his behavior. This story comes with action, an interesting storyline, and historical settings. You will have fun following Mari throughout her adventures and seeing how she handles the challenges along her path. The Fae Court job reveals a lot, and you cannot help but wonder what will happen in the next installment.
Trial by Fae is a fascinating story with characters that will stay in your mind long after you are done reading. Mari does a great job of showing that she can be girly and do her job well. Sometimes, this bright girl manages to neutralize the monsters instead of killing them, which leaves her with enough energy to tackle tougher challenges. Mari’s relationship with her sister adds a lot to the story, and you can only hope that her friendship with the thornwolf will grow into something else. The competition also does some good to the story, and it is great that the story doesn’t end with a cliffhanger.
