Lee Child Biography:
#1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Lee Child is best known for his main character, Jack Reacher. In fact, Lee Child has written all of the “Jack Reacher” books although has started co-writing with his brother since 2020.
The plan eventually is for Andrew Child to take over the series.
Tom Cruise starred as the main character in a movie titled, simply, “Jack Reacher.” and a sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Lee Child has also been the recipient of several awards including the Anthony and the Barry awards for Best First Mystery for his first Jack Reacher novel, “Killing Floor.”
Another Reacher novel, “The Enemy”, won the Barry and the Nero awards for Best Novel. With all of these accolades one would think Lee Child was born to be an author. But as usually is the case, his success story has many twists and turns that lead him on the path to writing his best selling novels and to ultimately create this alluring character. Born Jim Grant on October 29, 1954 in Coventry England, Child and his family moved to Birmingham when he was four years old.
At the age of 20, in 1974, Child entered Law School in Sheffield, England. It is said that he never intended to actually practice law. Upon graduation, he decided instead to get a job in commercial television and joined Granada TV in Manchester. Child would end up working there for 18 years before being fired as a result of “corporate restructuring.” During that time he wrote countless commercials, news stories and trailers. It was 1995 and Child was 40 years old.
After purchasing six dollars worth of paper and pencils, he decided to try his hand at writing. Lee Child then wrote his first Reacher novel, “Killing Floor.” Reacher novels are not the only works that Lee Child has published. He has also written the short stories, “Second Son” and “Deep Down.” These are now available as eBooks. Child moved to New York in the summer of 1998. This is where he met his wife, Jane. It is to her that his 2012 book, “A Wanted Man” is dedicated. Together they have a grown daughter, an apartment in Manhattan and a home in the south of France. Child also counts his numerous plane rides between his two domiciles as his “third home.”
His brother, Andrew Grant is also a thriller novelist. In his spare time, Child likes to read, listen to music and watch the New York Yankees. He was elected President of the Mystery Writers of America in 2009. He is also available for speaking engagements and has his own website, www.leechild.com. Never before has one character – especially from a book – become such an enigma. As one reads these novels, an immediate image of who Jack Reacher is and what he looks like can be visualized.
Jack Reacher has his own biography and statistics. He was born on October 29th with no middle name. This is referenced a few times throughout the books. Reacher frequently tells people his name on his birth certificate is “Jack None Reacher.” He is a large man – extremely large and ominous – weighing between 220 and 250 pounds and standing 6 and a half feet tall. His chest is 50 inches across and he wears a size 3XL coat and the inseam on his pants measures 95 centimeters.
Born on an Army base in Berlin, Jack Reacher and his brother Joe moved around a lot as kids. Now both his mother and his father and his brother are all deceased. Reacher left home at the age of eighteen and then graduated from West Point. He served 13 years in the Army bouncing from Major down to Captain and finally back up to Major before leaving the service in 1997. Reacher has no drivers license, receives no Federal Benefits and will not file taxes. It is often wondered what he does for money.
He is a decorated military serviceman. Reacher buried his Silver Star with his Mother and has also received the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, to name a few. To say he has special “skills” is probably an understatement. In many of the novels, Reacher is in the wrong place at the wrong time but ends up using his skills to solve even the most perilous situations. In “Killing Floor”, for example, the first of the Reacher novels, Reacher is arrested for murder shortly after arriving in Margrave, Georgia.
The victim happens to be his own brother who he has not seen in seven years. It does not help that the main eyewitness happens to be the police chief who claims to have seen Reacher at the scene. Reacher knows he was boarding a bus in Tampa at the time. With the help of a Harvard-graduate chief detective and a female officer, Reacher traces his brother’s steps to solve the mystery. Of course this all happens in a span of only three days.
This superb adventure easily captivates the reader and creates a relationship with Reacher that is hard to forget. In the second Reacher novel, “Die Trying,” a Chicago dentist is attacked and thrown into the trunk of his own car. Coincidentally, Reacher and a woman he does not even know are taken hostage in the light of day.
Ever the gentleman, Reacher was only “with” this woman because she was limping and struggling on her crutches and of course he stopped to help her. Turns out she is an FBI agent. They are taken hostage for ransom. Together, Reacher and this woman must work together and act as a team to get out of their predicament.
As only Reacher can do, he relates to this woman and uses his charm and wit, not to mention his incredible intelligence and skills, to not only get them out safely, but also take down the criminals. The good thing about Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels is that they can be read in any order.
Lee Child provides enough background in each book to bring the reader current without sounding repetitive and redundant. With all of these thrilling, often crazy and sometimes unimaginable situations that Jack Reacher finds himself in just during the course of his every day life, it is easy to see how a reader can get sucked in, and really not mind. It is what makes each and every novel special. It is what makes Lee Child a truly gifted master at story-telling.

I’ve read just about all of the books twice, including those by Andrew. One thing I have noticed lately is that some of the characters use the same words and phrases as Reacher – in fact they talk just the same way eg. “That’s for damn sure”.
That’s just not right. The only people who are liable to speak in the same manner are those from the same family or work group etc. Maybe it’s Andrew, I don’t know, but whoever is doing it needs to recognise and stop it. Unfortunately, once you see it you can’t unsee it, as they say. MTC
I agree that Andrew’s books are no where near as good as Lee’s. Also, I just finished Safe Enough. I do not recommend it.
I can see I am in the minority, but I think Tom Cruise is exactly right for the role. No he isn’t as big as the character in the book, but, he has his personality – the intensity – everything about him fits the roll except the size. And anyway, the way that Jack Reacher is always winning every physical altercation he is in, makes the movie even more exciting that someone Tom Cruise’s size succeeds regardless of the size of his opponent.
Only real Jack Reacher-at least based on looks is Lee Child. Liev Schreiber would not be bad and Alan Ritchson looked pretty darn good on Prime. No way Tom Cruise…poor casting there, did not like the preview so no way the movie
Lee Child wrote a very good, exciting book and I read them all. He passed the authorship to his brother and… I quit! Loved the character “Reacher” and the action with Lee (James D. Grant) writing, but… “thunk”. The brother cannot write!! I have all 24 REACHER books by James, and now I’m done. BRING James BACK!!!!
I am a little confused by some of the series listed on this page as many have nothing to do with Lee Child, some he has only been quoted as having read and others (like the MX Sherlock Holmes series) seem only to be included because Lee Child wrote one story in one edition in the series – perhaps you could explain these other lists a little please?

I’ve read just 7 or 8 Reacher books and love them, fresh but consistent. Also thought T. Cruise was – well …….. a foot short.
I did like the TV series a lot but Reacher never struck me as a body builder, weight lifter, just big and in good shape who could buy cheap clothes without bursting out the seams.
I just finished watching the new Jack Reacher TV series, starring Alan Ritchson, on Amazon Prime Video. It was very good! Finally, a movie that follows the book and has a star worthy of the story. Alan Ritchson really rocks as Jack Reacher!
Excellent series, wonderful actors, I am thrilled to see Lee Childs books portrayed so well in a TV series, I am an avid fan and have read his books for many years, hope this series will continue!

A new Reacher TV series, starring Alan Ritchson, on Amazon Prime Video starts on February 4, 2022. Alan Ritchson is 39 years old and 6’2″ tall. He was a military dependent and knows military attitudes, etc. If you Google him and look at images, you’ll see why he will be 200% better than Tom Cruise.
I finished the new series on Amazon prime. OMG What a great series. I love the connection to the the book. The characters are dead on and so believable. I hope this series continues.

From the first time I read Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, I pictured Steve Austin as playing that role. Tom Cruise wasn’t even on my radar and yes, it was a great disappointment when I watched the movies.
In my opinion, once an author stops writing either by design or by unfortunate circumstance, his character or series should stop. Generally, replacement authors tend to miss the nuances of the original, robbing the book of what makes the story line true and familiar.
I tried Andrew Child’s Reacher. Sadly, I have decided to stop reading about Reacher’s exploits.
Likewise for Kyle Mills writing in place of Vince Flynn. I find it painful to try and go through Mill’s rendition of Mitch Rapp.
I agree with Steven. Lee Child is the only one who can write a Reacher novel. Lee has the imagination of Reacher, he describes how Reacher thinks, acts, why Reacher is who he is and to me Lee Child is Reacher and Reacher is Lee Child. Andrew doesn’t think like Reacher and he doesn’t catch my imagination as Lee does when he writes. Reacher should get married and settled down with children written only by Lee Child OR Lee Child continues to write the novels alone.
I am saddened by the change in the Reacher book series. I eagerly looked forward to October each year just to get the new release so I could see what my buddy Reacher had gotten himself into.
I too was very disappointed at seeing Tom cruise in the role of Reacher but I gotta say I binged the new series on prime. I think they nailed it.
I saw the movie before reading a single Jack Reacher book… and after reading even a little bit of the first of the series… I was dumbfounded about the choice of Tom Cruise as the movie character. A notorious short guy with a face that may not be called “handsome” by everyone… but certainly does=n’t fit with the rough, rugged, not necessarily handsome… but attractive Jack Reacher. Tom Cruise WISHES he could be Jack Reacher. No famous and currently active actor comes to mind. Maybe a young John Wayne or a more contemporary but still too short Tom Berringer. Hemsworth is too much of a pretty boy. Hey… Channing Tatum could give it a shot.

I think if you look at Lee Child , his description of Jack Reacher is HIMSELF… Tall.. not particularly handsome .. Lean .. Not over developed muscles… Quiet strength … A Stillness about him that can strike at any time…. The actor that plays Reacher should resemble Lee Child.. Be an UNKNOWN actor, so he can’t be compared to any other role he’s played…. My opinion ….

If Lee Child is 6’5″ tall and a bulky 250 pounds who formerly played a bit in the NFL… you’re looking at photos I’ve yet to see. Maybe Brian Bosworth would be a close description. A bit shorter and a bit lighter, but the rugged face and frightening demeanor would fit. The problem is that most actors turn to acting because they are too short to participate in sports. So… there isn’t an abundance of guys who fit the bill. Twenty years ago I did. Hahahaha!!
Can’t put Lee Child’s books down, some I’ve read twice. Liev Schreiber would be a great Reacher and would do justice in the roll due to his European background and stature. Hope to see another dozen movies and the sooner the better.
I’m in agreeance with the Tom Cruise naysayers. Anyone besides TC. How about John Cena, Jason Statham, The Rock, even Vin Diesel!! Liev Schreiber has my vote. Anyone besides Tom Crud………..
I agree Stephanie, TC was the worst choice to represent the Jack Reacher. I thought of Tom Selleck, but he is too old now. Not a TC fan, he’s literally a nut.
The Affair – The book refers to the BDU rank of a Major as black, it shold be brown, black would be a LTC. US Military officers rank go from silver to black in BDU and from gold to brown ( only 2LT and Major are gold to brown)
I have read all of Jack Reacher books and found them helpful during the pandemic because traveling to different places while locked down has been a life saver. More books, please
I have read every Reacher novel twice, including The Sentinel. Now I’m wondering if he and his son wrote this one before the 2020 US election. If so they must have had an inkling of the fraud involved…. or some other intuition. Chapter 23 hit it on square on the head. Keep up the great writing. I can’t get enough of Reacher. BTW.. we need another movie, without Cruise. As said by Nan F, Liev Schreiber would be perfect.

If you enjoyed the books and know the charector, Tom Cruise was a very bad choice for the movie. A 5 foot tall popular actor is a joke to fill Jack Reacher’s shoes. Reacher is supposed to be so big that he can’t disappear in a crowd. There are so many big unknowns that deserved a chance to bring the book to the big screen.
Back in his younger days Clint Eastwood would have made a Great Jack Reacher, today my picks would be Jason Statham or Gerard Butler. Jason would have to wear a hair piece. They both are rough guys with strong physical bodies, with an edge. Lastly Bradley Cooper is possible…
Most posters agree Cruise was a terrible choice to play Reacher, a character so defined by his sheer physical presence. Lawrence Olivier couldn’t act his way into that and Cruise is no Sir Lawrence… he isn’t even Dame Judy. Paul Newman had that ability to play bigger men. Obody like him now. I’d vote for Duane Johnson.
I am not keen on the idea of having two authors, regardless of who the second one is doing Reacher books. The character came from one mind and should continue to be that way. These collaborations on solid characters never work well.

Just finished “The Affair” and now I understand Reacher’s current lifestyle. He didn’t seem to be a soldier that would be kicked out, but now it all makes sense.
Whenever I read any of the Jack Reacher novels the only person I can picture owning this part is John Cena, and I’m not a wrestling fan by any means, but I think he’s a decent man and actor….and much more believable in coming close to Reachers’ size and character.
I think Tom Cruise was picked by accident due to a typo, instead of 6 foot 4 someone wrote 4 foot 6 making Tiny Tom Thumb Cruise the only viable option 🙂

I come from the land of Peter Jackson & Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit. Can I just say that I am a devotee of your books. But Tom Cruise in the movie a step too far. He is 5’7 I am 5’9 and come from a very tough area in Auckland. I certainly could take him. Books yes, movies no. Belle
I worked in a call centre for sky tv, got a call from a angry woman who claimed that tom cruise had ruined the reacher stories for her as he was to short and skinny to play the part, I had never heard of jack reacher or lee child until then, I went and bought all the books as I read a lot on holiday and enjoyed them until I started reading, without fail, it is without doubt the worst book I have ever read, badly written , and the plot is just so silly and unbelievable it beggars belief . now I realise that the stories are made up but cmon, the American secret service need help protecting someone, really,,, I got about a third of the way through and put the book in the bin as the story was so pathetic . I can read almost anything but if this isn’t the worst book ever written then it will have to do until it comes along. I can only hope that the rest of them are better than this one .
So what do class as literature?
IMO, the only actor that could do justice to the character of Reacher is Liev Schreiber…aka LBJ in “The Butler”, Ray Donvoan in the same named TV series, Frank in Repo Man, Victor Creed/SaberTooth in the X-Men movies…He’s 6’3″ and has that steely-eyed, no-nonsense “mess with me at your own expense” kind of face, with a physical presence that leaves no doubt he can/will back it up if need be. He also has that same “Reacheresque” type of voice and manner of speaking.
The image of Reacher I always see in my mind’s eye when I’m reading any Jack Reacher book is Liev…next time you watch him work, think of him as Reacher… and next time you read a Reacher story or watch a Reacher movie, think of Liev in the role and you may see what I see.
Tom Cruise is possibly the WORST choice they could have made to play Reacher. He is nothing at all like the character is. Furthermore, my biggest complaints with the first movie is; Reacher is self-professed terrible driver yet the movie makes him seem like an expert, and, in the fight scene at the end of the movie, Reacher is supposedly hurt by just a few punches ??? Really? Really Really? I don’t think so!
Of course I agree with everyone else that Cruise was a poor choice. I thought Dolph Lundgren in his youth would have worked, but I like Schreiber better for my pre-conceived notion of Jack Reacher.
