Laini Taylor is an American published author.

Born on December 22, 1971, Laini is known for writing young adult fantasy stories. She is perhaps best known for writing her series Daughter of Smoke and Bone. She has been a finalist for the National Book Award in the category of Young People’s Literature.

Taylor was born in Chico, California. She grew up as the daughter of a U.S. military parent and subsequently spent a lot of her childhood being a military kid and spending time in California, Hawaii, Belgium, and Italy.

Laini attended UC Berkeley and received her English degree. She resides in Portland, Oregon, along with her daughter and her husband. She has always had a passion for being an author and writing, and she was thirty-five years old by the time she completed her first novel.

Taylor wrote a graphic novel in 2004 for Image Comics. The graphic novel was also illustrated by Jim Di Bartolo, her husband. She wrote her first novel Dreamdark: Blackbringer, which was first published in 2007. The sequel received the 2009 Cybil Award. She published Daughter of Smoke and Bone in 2011 and the first book was selected by Amazon to be the Best Teen Book of 2011, with its sequel Days of Blood and Starlight making the same list a year later in 2012. The trilogy has been translated into thirty-two languages and counting and is in development.

She published her book Strange the Dreamer in 2017, which was followed by Muse of Nightmares in 2018. This is where Lazlo Strange, polyglot and scribe, makes his way to the Lost City of Weep. The author even created her own unique language for the purposes of the world, which was woven into the plot. Strange the Dreamer was named a Michael L. Printz Honor Book and also received the 2018 Leslie Bradshaw Award in the category of young adult literature.

Taylor is also the author of Lips Touch: Three Times, which ended up being a finalist for the National Book Award. She has also written several short stories as well as novellas.

Laini is married to her husband Jim Di Bartolo, an artist. They have a daughter named Clementine and have some cats that live there too with them in Portland, Oregon.

Laini founded an online writing community during the Covid period. It can be found at her Patreon, where you can also find many posts all about topics like overcoming perfectionism, all things having to do with creativity, and her posts on writing. There are also posts about weekly Zoom meet-ups.

Silksinger is the second book in the Faeries of Dreamdark series by Laini Taylor.
