Going under the pseudonym of Kim Harrison is author Dawn Cook who is well known for writing her unique brand of urban fantasy and graphic novels for which she has successfully gained recognition. Living in Michigan currently, she is a renowned writer of young adult fiction who’s tried and become adept at a number of various different genres. Whilst she still spends time in her former home of South Carolina as well, she enjoys success as an author of highly regarded and popular fiction.
Early and Personal Life
Raised in the Midwest of America near to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kim Harrison aka Dawn Cook was born in 1966 into a large family of boys, her being the only girl. This led to her regarding herself as somewhat of a tomboy whilst growing up. It was then at the age of fifteen she was to discover her love of writing that was to propel her career as an author during adulthood. Whilst she didn’t go in for the traditional English writing courses during further education, apart from learning the basic skills necessary, she devoted her time to her passion regardless. Writing down stories constantly, she became focused on her craft constantly honing and refining her skills day-by-day.
With her pen name being Kim Harrison, she led two separate lives both as Dawn and as her writing alter-ego. It was only in 2009 that her true name was disclosed during a Locus magazine article and the truth finally came out, much to her relief as she didn’t have to hide it anymore. Using them both as different personas for her work, she happily alternates between the two with ease. Currently living in Michigan, she spends her days writing, as well as being with her two children and her husband.
Writing Career
With beginnings in science-fiction, Harrison felt she was more interested in character driven pieces so decided to turn her attention towards more contemporary based fantasy fiction. Spending a decade as an aspiring writer, she honed her craft and polished her skills to become the writer that she is today. Her first novel, ‘Dead Witch Walking’, was the culmination of all this as it was released in 2004 with the help of Diana Gill who was soon to become her editor.
Influenced by the author Ray Bradbury, she gave up her day-job and started to focus herself on her writing career, which she’s successfully pursued to this day. Well known for interacting directly with her legions of fans, she maintains a direct form of communication with them as she manages her online presence on a regular basis. With a history writing romance novels as well, she has developed a rich and varied career as an author of great repute, both critically and commercially. This can be seen in her predilection for graphic-novels, such as ‘Blood Work: An Original Hollows Graphic Novel’, first published in 2011 on July the 12th.
Producing a number of series and short-stories collections, she has a large ever-increasing number of works to her name. This enables her to continue her stories and manage arcs that avoid the traditional pitfalls and cliches typically encumbered with her chosen genres, thus allowing her to create something that is both unique and idiosyncratic to her. This is something she will carry on doing as her popularity continues to grow.
Dead Witch Walking
The first in ‘The Hollows’ series, this was the debut novel of Kim Harrison initially released in 2004. Set in Cincinnati, it features a place called ‘the Hollows’, a mysterious location where all the creatures found within the night are said to congregate. It is here that they have their parties, prowling sessions and where they hide from the outside world. This is also the place where they conduct their feeding frenzies.
The dark underworld they inhabit though must maintain order as it retains any sense of equilibrium. It needs this if it wants to continue unimpeded by the threat of the outside world. Keeping that order is one Rachel Morgan, a tough and sexy bounty hunting witch who helps keep everything in-line. Where the Vampires of the night feed on their prey and predators eat other predators, it’s a tough job, but somebody needs to do it. Using her wits, attitude and prowess she must fend for herself if she’s to survive and keep the peace at whatever cost, even if this means bringing back her bounties either alive, dead or somewhere in-between. Will she be able to manage it and keep her role as the top bounty hunter? Can she fend of evil or will she succumb to one of the many dangers lying in wait for her? Just what is out there and what does the future hold for one ‘dead witch walking’?
The Undead Pool
Delving back into the world of Rachel Morgan once again, this is the 12th installment from Kim Harrison in ‘The Hollows’ series. Originally published in 2014, it was released on the 25th of February to much acclaim. After a long and successful run, the characters are now well established as their roles are securely sealed for its audience.
This time Rachel Morgan is found to be suffering the extensive cost of having saved what is known as the demonic ever after, following the events of the previous novel. Happening in its wake, there has been a string of incidents involving strange magic that’s been hitting Cincinnati, as well as disrupting the Hollows. These have caused spells to start backfiring and destabilized the truce between the Inderlander race and the humans, creating tensions and friction between the two of them.
Facing the prospect of an all-out supernatural war, Rachel Morgan is tasked with finding the source of these magical disturbances and restoring the balance once again. Keeping the vampire masters from disappearing and losing their control over the stability of their people, Morgan faces a race against time to restore order. This means she might have to use the ancient art of Elven magic, something she really didn’t want to have to do. Will she manage to regain the balance in time? Can she keep her sanity using dangerous magic amidst it all? Will the world be saved in ‘The Undead Pool’?
