Kevin Hearne was born in Arizona on December 9th 1970 and is one of America’s notable urban fantasy authors. His interest in books about people with superhuman powers developed at an early age. He saw a need to further develop the characters in some of the comic books he read and thought readers should be furnished with background information on the characters. Some of the most important moments in his early childhood, include when his parents took him to see the first release of “Star Wars” in Phoenix. This further fed into his growing interest for comic and fiction books.
After completing high school, Kevin Hearne enrolled at Northern Arizona University. It was during this time that he actually began writing. At the university, he took on roles as the editor of the college newspaper. He was also often featured as a columnist and produced cartoons for the comic section. Kevin Hearne wrote his first novel which was never published. This was the first of many novels he wrote and were never published at this time. The most notable being, The Road to Cibola, which took him six years to write. After completing university with a degree in English Education, Kevin Hearne moved to California, where he worked as a high school English teacher for three years. He returned to Arizona and continued teaching for another 15 years.
Gaining Acceptance for his work
For Kevin Hearne, his books also represent important learning experiences he went through in his life. The Road to Cibola, which although was never published and took him such a long time to write, taught him a lesson about balancing his regular teaching job and his career as an author. This was an important factor before he could get recognition as an author. While working as a teacher in Arizona, he wrote an epic fantasy totaling, 114,000 words. He sent it to some agents. They all rejected it, with the exception of one, who decided to look at it for onward review. After waiting a long time for a response, Kevin Hearne decided to start work on another piece. Over a period of nine months, he was to work on what was going to be his breakthrough novel, Hounded. He sought an agent who promotes urban fantasy books, to promote the book. Once again the book went through a series of rejections but he was to receive an offer from Evan Goldfried of Jill Grinberg Literary Management. Evan identified nine publishers and sent the manuscript of Hounded to them, along with snapshots of the accompanying series. Four of the nine publishers showed great interest in the manuscript and bid for the book during an auction. Hounded was to mark the beginning of the successful, The Iron Druid Chronicles. It took a period of more than nineteen years for Kevin Hearne to have his work accepted by mainstream publishers.
