Her debut novel was the 2011 titled “Anna Dressed in Blood” that went on to achieve critical acclaim and much popularity among fantasy and horror fiction lovers. She is not one to be too fussy about the type of literature she reads. She reads philosophy, fiction, bad, and good books as she asserts that she takes the best from any type of literature and uses it to write her novels. Most of her literary choices have to do with her adventurous nature, as she is a person who enjoys living to the full.

Kendare Blake was born in Seoul, South Korea, before she was adopted by white American parents and brought to the United States while still an infant. She loves to joke that she was brought to the states when she was seven months with a cryptic instruction: “Feed her chocolate”. She got She grew up in Cambridge, Minnesota, and went to Ithaca College, in New York from where she got her Bachelors in Business Studies. She would later move to London, England, and attend Middlesex University from where she got a Master of Arts in Creative Writing. As an animal lover, she brakes for animals from the smallest such as a mouse and the largest such as a deer. When she is not writing she loves to play Final Fantasy and travel to wherever her mind will take her. Kendare Blake writes some of the most enthralling of horror fiction and fantasy. Her novels particularly the Three Dark Crowns series come with pitch perfect characterizations. The characterizations make for intriguing characters as the reader is driven to know more about the three queens. The Three Dark Crowns series of novels is about three characters Katharine, Arsinoe, and Mirabella. Katharine who also goes as “The Poisoner” is the youngest of the three and it shows in her behavior. Similar to her sister Arsinoe, she lacks any special talent and styles herself as a naturalist. The naturalist queen is not alone in her love for nature as she shares this love with the fiercest and strongest naturalist in the Kingdom, Mirabelle. Mirabelle who is the eldest of the queens has the capacity to control the elements and is the most talented among the three. While they are always in a constant state of competition with each other, Mirabelle has the upper hand, though she loves her sisters too much and will never think of murdering them just to win.

The Three Dark Crowns are an excellent series of novels that come with moody and dark atmosphere, and some of the most intriguing of characters that showcase Blake’s excellence in storytelling and world building. Kendare Blake’s writing has only gone from strength to strength ever since she published her first young adult novel. The Three Dark Crowns series of novels particularly the characters have been compared to the assassin nuns in “Robin LaFevers’ series. With the Robin LaFevers one of the best and most popular fantasy/horror series of novels out there, that is high praise indeed. These are great novels if you are looking for novel with swoon worthy boys even if they change and become mindless brutes by the end of the third novel. To top it off, the novels come with the most explosive and satisfying of conclusions to leave the reader wanting more.

“Three Dark Crowns” the first novel of the Three Dark Crowns series of novels by Kendare Blake is a terse narrative following three triplets. The three children are daughters to the queen and hence one of them stands to become the heir to the crown. The three were born with different gifts and at the age of six are separated from their mother and sent to live with families that will help them develop their gifts. The three sisters never come into contact with each other until they are sixteen years of age, which is when they would have to kill two of the others so that one may become the undisputed ruler of the kingdom of Fennbirn. Katherine is a poisoner, which means that she could take any amount of the most dangerous of poisons without exhibiting any ill symptoms or side effects. However, to strengthen her gift, the Arrons need to poison her as frequently as possible which leaves her quite a frail queen to be covered in scabs. Mirabelle is an elemental who has powers to control the elements such as wind, water, and fire. Her gifts also include the capability to control the weather such as manufacturing nasty storms, making her the strongest contender for the throne. Arsinoe is a naturalist that should have control over animals and make flowers bloom whenever she wants. However, she is yet to develop these powers and has to rely on her friend and expert naturalist Jules to teach her, before she can go head-to-head against her sisters.

“One Dark Throne” is the enthralling second novel in the Three Dark Thrones series of novels. The three sisters now have to fight each other for the right to take the crown of Fennbirn. Ascension Year is underway and the Quickening with its terrible unforgettable events are now in the rear view mirror. All bets are off as the feeble and once weak sister Katharine comes back stronger than ever and willing to do anything to claim the crown. Arsinoe has also discovered her powers and now needs to learn how to harness her special talents and abilities without letting the others in on just how much power she has. Mirabella who has always had some of the strongest talents and capabilities of all the sisters making her the front-runner now finds herself in a precarious position. She is facing even fiercer attacks that put her and her loved ones in danger that she is helpless in preventing.
